Lava flowing into the ocean at Kalapana, Puna District, Big Island of Hawai'i. The source of this flow is Pu'u O'o vent, which has been erupting continuously for 30 years. This particular flow reached the sea at Thanksgiving, 2012.
Reached via a challenging 2.5- or 3-mile hike across an old lava field; must go with a permitted guide (or else end up hopelessly lost!). Recommended: +Bruce Omori and +Tom Kuali'i from Extreme Exposure in Hilo.

At Kilauea Crater, in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, the Halema'uma'u Crater has been venting for 5 years now. This shot was taken at night, under a full moon; the cloud of steam and smoke is lit at the bottom by the glow from the lava in the vent. Stars visible in the sky include the constellation Orion.

I planned months to get this composition, with the Milky Way lying gently over the top of Haleakala (peak 10,000+ feet, a dormant volcano on Maui, also a US National Park). Shot during a new moon, about an hour before sunrise. Lights on the shoreline are Kihei/Wailea/Makena in south Maui; but you can see lights 'Up Country' at about 3,500 foot elevation, from Makawao to Kula.

Along the Road to Hana, in Maui, there may be lots of waterfalls (depending on the rainfall etc), and some of them are basically invisible from the narrow two-lane road. The lower falls on Wailuaiki Stream are a classic example ... you've gotta find a place to park, then hike up the road, then climb up on the edge of a steep drop to even see them.

Had a nice drive out along the Road to Hana (Maui) yesterday. Lots of great waterfalls that are easy to get to, and some take a little work. This photo is of a fall that people call Wailuaiki Falls, and is less than a mile hike up above the road (if you know where you're going!). On investigation, I found that it is one of several great waterfalls along the West Wailuaiki Stream; so may better be termed "Upper Wailuaiki Falls." But of all the falls in Hawai'i, it's hard to beat this spot for sheer beauty and peacefulness. Aloha.

The Big Island of Hawai'i boasts one National Park and several National Historic Sites, including Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park (formerly "Place of Refuge"). Before western contact, Hawaiian culture was controlled by a variety of "kapu" (taboo) practices. Breaking a kapu could result in death ... unless the perpetrator could make it to one of the places of refuge before being caught. If successful, they would perform penance at the refuge, and eventually be allowed to return to society.

The Hawaiian Islands were all formed by volcanoes, the eroded remains of which form the "mountains" of Hawai'i. On the island of O'ahu, there are two "mountain ranges"; the one on the windward side is the Ko'olau range, which includes the Nu'uanu Pali (far left). The Pali is the site of a major battle in the late 1700s when King Kamehameha invaded O'ahu, driving the defenders up the Nu'uanu Valley, and eventually over the cliffs here at the Pali.
