Stronger

Happy #halfnekkidthursday , everyone! Some of you may not know this, but I've struggled with low self esteem for much of my life. Throughout my life, I have been surrounded by negative influences who made me believe that I was less in some way. It became a self fulfilling prophecy, as I began to withdraw from anything requiring much effort, always afraid of the failure I believed was inevitable. Of course I now see that the only true failure is never trying in the first place, so I have vowed to push my comfort level to the maximum, grab life by the horns, and make the most of every second and ever opportunity.

For the first time in my life, I have been lucky enough to find someone who encourages me to be the best me possible, cheering me on through the triumphs and tribulations. As part of throwing my comfort level out the window, I have started to embrace all... more »

Tattoo Vampire

Happy Wednesday! Another image from a shoot this past weekend (I'll try to not inundate you too much with my tattooed girls), this woman (the lovely Amy Bathory) was super rad to work with, as she is an absolute natural with fierce posing and "the look", so I submit her to you for #womenwednesday  from +Niki Aguirre and +Scott Detweiler. Wishful Eyes

One of my favorite model shots from this past weekend, I was going to wait awhile to post it, but when I saw that today's #portraittuesday  (brought to you by the lovely +Tana Teel and +Laura Balc) theme is "eyes", I couldn't help myself! (FYI, I've been shooting with a Canon 85mm f/1.2 L recently, and it is AMAZING when you hit the focus just right!)

Happy #lonelychairtuesdays , everyone! :)

One of the cool things about dating a brilliant inventor/entrepreneur is that I'm constantly surrounded by his amazing creations, from robots to furniture. He conceptualized and created the table and chair shown here, which are even cooler up close (the fertility sculpture is something he painstakingly acquired). "The entire left side of the chair is cantilevered from the right side and entirely unsupported. The spacing of the bars grows exponentially as one goes down the chair and the size of the endcaps increases exponentially as well." And the table is "assembled from 72 individual aluminum ribs, then welded, sand-blasted and anodized." In other words, freakin' awesome!

Nymph

Happy #halfnekkidthursday , everyone!! I have a meeting regarding a possible gallery show, am taking my last final today, and am then heading off for a weekend of work and pleasure, including a shoot with the freakin' rad +Jenn Woodward, pictured here in all her nymphish glory. Tracks

I've already posted 2 images today, but when I heard about #weloveyoupemberton , I had to contribute something to the cause. So I dug through my archives, and although I had no beautiful florals or unicorns, I did come across this lovely set of train tracks. So +kimberton pemberly, when you're feeling better, let's go dance on some train tracks and make G+ proud! Here's to you, one of the most awesomesauce ladies around; I <3 you, wifey! (P.S. No Exit

While taking a relaxing drive through Maine with my boyfriend last weekend, we looked to our right and saw what we assumed to be a pretty rare sight: A bridge in the process of being taken down, totally missing the roadway upon which cars once drove. Luckily, with a camera handy and a super supportive boyfriend, I quickly parked and hopped out of the car. We ran the length of the adjacent bridge and, as puzzled motorists looked on, I took this photograph.

Fountain

For variety's sake, instead of your typical lonely chair, here's a pair of lonely benches for your viewing pleasure. These benches sit in an abandoned sulfur bath house in Sharon Springs, NY, an extremely economically depressed area where all of the hotels and even some of the residential houses are in various stages of collapse. When the town housed a vibrant community, however, before the interstate moved traffic far enough out of town to have devastating effects on the local community, flocks of summering travelers would receive various "treatments" in this bath house. Now, the area is much like a ghost town, albeit spotted with gorgeous buildings in various states of disrepair.more »

Entrails

Never Alone

Happy Monday, everyone. What a surreal weekend; on Thursday night, I went to the movies with my boyfriend in Cambridge, and as soon as we entered the lobby after the movie ended, an usher ran up to us and told us that there was a sniper at MIT (that was the official report at the time), just a few blocks away, that many areas had been "quarantined", and that the police were issuing warnings to try to keep people from getting shot on their way home. We saw helicopters and emergency personnel everywhere as we made our way back to the apartment to watch the news. The next morning, we awoke to constant sirens and an official request asking everyone in the surrounding cities to stay indoors as the police pursued one of the suspects in last Monday's Boston Marathon bombing, warning everyone that there may be explosives planted around the city or that armed terroristsmi... more »

Bitter Heart

Happy #halfnekkidthursday , everyone!! I first want to apologize for my relative absence on G+ of late (which is why I'm digging into the lingerie series outtakes for today's #hnt  shot!). Being a single mom making her way through school, trying to get a photography business off the ground from scratch (I'm supposed to shoot my first wedding this weekend - wish me luck!), and trying to make sufficient time to keep building a strong and lasting relationship with my insanely busy entrepreneur boyfriend, in addition to all of my other responsibilities, there are rarely enough hours in the day, even though I average 3-4 hours of sleep every night! Open Your Eyes

I'm an expert at second guessing myself, and sometimes I get so lost in my head that I fail to see the beauty and immense possibilities right in front of me. I am thankful for the frequent moments of clarity when I realize how lucky I am and what's truly important. My Last Breath

Happy Monday, everyone!! Wow, what an absolutely amazing weekend: I had a paid (headshot) shoot, a product shoot (of my insanely awesome boyfriend's robots), and my first model shoot on Saturday, and it was a blast!! I had the pleasure of working with the absolutely beautiful and totally rad +Jenn Woodward, although playing in the woods with her was way more fun than any work I've ever done. I'll be posting tons more shots from this shoot over the coming days, and will hopefully be photographing Jenn a thousand more times, but enjoy this first image from our awesome 45 minute nature adventure!

Empire State of Mind

I never get a chance to contribute to #portraittuesday  from +Laura Balc and +Tana Teel, but when I heard about the connection/expression theme this week, I immediately thought of this shot that I recently took of one of my favorite people of all time. Behind the Door

I wound up at a dinner party the other night, talking about Hudson River State Hospital, and I was reminded of my time there, my first visit to an abandoned asylum. I was admittedly nervous as hell when I first climbed a rusty fire escape to the top floor, only to find a patchwork of massive holes throughout the floorboards, so that I could see all the way into the basement, many levels beneath. The only way to traverse the top floor was to lay large beams down across the holes in the floor to serve as weight distributors, and hope that they were placed well and that I didn't lose my footing. After a few deep breaths, I did what I often do when faced with fear: overcome the fear and enjoy the ride. Knots

Happy #halfnekkidthursday , everyone! As I haven't had nearly any free time of late, I dug into my archives for today's #hnt  shot, and after a bit of reprocessing, it started to dawn on me how poignant this image, and the act of altering it, is to where I am mentally right now. When this picture was taken last fall, I was ruled, in a large part, by my fears. I had suffered so many bumps along the road of life that I was afraid to go too far outside of my comfort zone, afraid of failing, and maybe even afraid of the unknown. Recently, however, someone amazing has come into my life and reminded me of just how capable I am, and over the past few months I've undergone a transformation of sorts, much like a photo being reprocessed, and I have come to embrace change and the chance to push my boundaries, often on a daily basis. A Passage in Time

Overwhelmed

Happy Friday, everyone!!! Life is funny: Sometimes you have your future all planned out, but when that plan is suddenly turned on its head, it's easy to freak out and mourn the loss of what you thought you wanted. Luckily, though, with an open heart and mind and a huge dose of hope, passion, and optimism, sometimes the most incredible things can come your way when you least expect them. I don't claim to know with any certainty what the future holds, but I know that, over the past couple of months, I have been unexpectedly swept off my feet, and the future is looking brighter than ever.

Happy #halfnekkidthursday , everyone! Another from the (almost finished) caged series, I'm dedicating this #hnt  post to Jason Molina, a very talented musician who recently died due to alcoholism. In what seems now like another life, I was also once caged by addiction, and I am thankful every day that I was able to break the shackles and to start a new and beautiful life. I never forget, though, all of the people who don't have the good fortune of escaping their addictions, and hearing of Molina's passing reminds me of all of the people I have known who have died, or have come very close to death, due to their addictions. I rarely discuss this part of my past openly, but in the light of Molina's passing, I feel it's appropriate to publicly share this little known part of my back story. Golden Glow

Happy Tuesday, everyone! I'm sharing this chair from an abandoned NY asylum during golden hour for #lonelychairtuesdays  today because, with a week in NYC coming in my very near future, I've got NY on my mind! So if any of you have suggestions for things I absolutely have to photograph while I'm there or people I should make a point of visiting, I'm all ears!

What I've Done

A few weeks back, I went on a search for a great location in order for my 3 year old to practice his photography, and I found this spot in Charlestown with smoke stacks, a wind turbine, a huge boat, a crane, a river, rocks and sticks, a bridge, and all sorts of things that plenty of kids would get super excited about. He could barely contain his excitement as he ran all over the place, too overwhelmed to even take any pictures! When he took a very brief rest to catch his breath, I snapped this photograph in the process. 

I feel very strongly about protecting our environment for future generations, and this image elicited a strong reaction in me, causing me to think about what the world will look like when my son is my age. Very Important Print Sale Update!

Hi everyone!

As many of you already know, I humbly started a print sale 12 days ago to try to raise enough money to replace my dying Canon 5D with a functional camera, so that I can continue to create art and hopefully single-handedly support my 3-year-old son Ben while finishing up my degree.

The response to this print sale has been overwhelming!! In the past 12 days, due to the love and support of all of you amazing G+ers, through print purchases, donations, and re-shares of the original post that got the word out to others who wanted to help, I have now earned more than half of what I set out to earn in order to purchase a new camera!!

Dirt

When I first entered this abandoned hotel in upstate New York on one of my first abandoned building shoots, I was admittedly scared. Most of the stairs bent beneath one's weight, so that with every flight I ascended, I was less sure if I'd be able to get back out alive. As with anything, though, after traipsing the halls for long enough, and especially after golden hour began to bathe the interior in a gorgeous orange hue, I became desensitized to my fears and started to embrace the beauty around me, like this dirt atop a dresser that almost seemed to sparkle in the sun's glow. I loved the play of light, shadow, lines, and textures in this shot, and look forward to facing a thousand more fears to experience all of the beauty the world has to offer.

Dirty Water

Hey everyone! I'm headed off shortly to have a downright awesome weekend filled with great times and people, photography and modeling, warm and fuzzies (of the love-laden variety), and snow! Since Boston was just blanketed with yet another nearly two feet of snow, I felt it fitting to post this shot of the Charles River, taken at the beginning of blue hour in the immediate aftermath of a major blizzard, with the Boston skyline reflecting off of the frost and ice on the water. Although my heart will always be in San Francisco, Boston will always be, in one way or another, my home, so for #lyricallyinspired  from +Jason Jakober, +Tara Romasanta, and +Amanda Recker:

You're My Sweetheart

It's Thursday again, and you know what that means: Happy #HalfNekkidThursday !! I still have plenty of shots from my caged series to share, but since I'm feeling anything but caged right now, I wanted to go a different route today. I may be showing a little less flesh in this shot than in my typical #hnt  posts, but it's the facial expression that makes this one especially bare and relevant.

The Window

Happy #lonelychairtuesdays , everybody!! This shot is from the first abandoned building I ever entered, a little abandoned school in rural North Carolina. I saw these chairs perched on the stage in the gym, almost as if the chair on the left was staring stoically out the window, turning its back on the pleading chair on the right (I'm very good at the anthropomorphism of chairs :)  ), and I felt very drawn to every element of this scene.
