This article appeared on my Facebook feed today. I'm sharing it just to work through the visceral disgust it evoked in me.
It's nominally about Angelina Jolie's double mastectomy. I originally didn't plan to have anything to say about that. I correctly anticipated the usual sexists coming out of the woodwork talking about how unfuckable this makes her, but if you're reading this you already know those people are a given and there's no point in dwelling on their awfulness.
What I didn't expect was the "healthy living" lunatics coming out and attacking Jolie's doctors, the entire medical establishment, and Jolie herself--including her medical sovereignty.

There's a great deal of evil in the world, and -- in general -- only a few are directly responsible for it. G+ What's Hot Serves Based On Gender
I heard a rumour this morning that if your profile is set to male, you'll get different What's Hot (Explore) content than if you're set to female.
So I opened a tab with my profile which was set to female, and from that opened a fresh tab with WH. Then I immediately changed my profile to male and opened another WH tab to compare as closely in time as possible the difference.
Holy. Fucking. Shit.
When I'm a girl, I get piles of those graphical platitudes I hate. I have understood all along why +EcoSnark gets those more than my real profile, because she shares them to her NerdSmacked community to make fun of them (see https://plus.google.com/communities/117382348426379346016 ). Disturbing detail of the day.
A week or two ago, I said to someone that "children are not private property, even if that's untrue legally". While searching for info on peeping Tom laws, I noticed this in WA state law:
The section 125, "Custody of children", falls under Title 26, Chapter 16, "Husband and Wife- Rights and Liabilities- Community Property".
I'm not sure what "community" means in this case, and I don't really want to read the rest of the chapter to find out, but I'm still irritated.

I found out I have an account on Imgur.
I didn't even have to put in my log-in information, it was pre-input. Which is weird, as I have NEVER logged into Imgur on this computer.
So I log into this new account and find out I have one message.
I've been on Imgur for TWO YEARS. Apparently as of 21 hours ago.
So after making an account I haven't touched for two years, on the exact anniversary, my login information appears pre-input, and I log into Imgur.
I am severely confused, but you know what, I'm just gonna go with it.

Speck is not nice.
This is the first thing I take away from this book. He is unrelenting in how he excoriates various people whose worldviews he disagrees with, from well-meaning traffic engineers to self-absorbed architects. But if you cut away his vitriol, you find a book populated with a host of fact and data coalesced into a simple-to-understand agenda: what to pay attention to when you're trying to increase pedestrian density, and why you should increase it in the first place.
My interest in walkable cities is different from Speck's, who seems to have his nose too close to the ground. A walkable city is a city that communicates with itself in a way that car-ridden landscapes do not. Cities are the bedrock and fundamental unit of civilization, and my own agendas require competently designed urban life.
