Renowned papers –– This may be worth a read

"Recently we discovered (cond-mat/0212043) that the majority of scientific citations are copied from the lists of references used in other papers. Here we show that a model, in which a scientist picks three random papers, cites them,and also copies a quarter of their references accounts quantitatively for empirically observed citation distribution. Simple mathematical probability, not genius, can explain why some papers are cited a lot more than the other." –– Simkin and Roychowdhury

But the problem here isn’t the “finding” that the Anglo-Saxon West is more tolerant. The problem is the pseudo-analysis. The specialty of foreign-affairs blogging is explaining to a supposedly uninformed public the complexities of the outside world. Because blogging isn’t reporting, nor is it subject to much editing (let alone peer review), posts like Fisher’s are particularly vulnerable to their author’s blind spots and risk endogenizing, instead of detecting and flushing out, the bullshit in their source material. What is presented as education is very likely to turn out, in reality, obfuscation.

Worth a read. Dig in.

[Meta] DAE get the feeling that G+ streams can get very saturated? If you're following hundreds or thousands of people – many of whom post very frequently – are you able to get anything meaningful out of the platform? On the other hand, you might have thousands of people following you (as indeed, bizarrely, I do) and yet not get much in the way of a conversation from them.

I guess my ultimate question is, Should I just share more photos/GIFs of cats?

Also, please tell me why I am in your circles and what you'd like me to share. :)

"In 1956, an ancient bronze statue of the Lord Siva (Lord of the Cosmic Dance or Sivapuram Nataraja) was removed from a temple in India for restoration purposes, subsequently held by an Indian private collector and ultimately sent to the United States with false export documents. In 1973, the Nataraja idol was sold by a New York dealer to the Norton Simon Foundation. In the same year, the Government of India sued the Foundation, seeking the return of the sculpture. The case, however, was settled out-of-court. Under the terms of the agreement, the Norton Simon Foundation recognised India’s title, while the Indian Government accepted to temporarily assign the Nataraja idol to the Foundation in the framework of a 10 year-long loan agreement."

I was told recently that a group at +CERN decided to ban laptops from a meeting to ensure the participants were paying attention and to keep the meeting short. Unfortunately, with everyone paying attention, they all had something to contribute and the meeting was twice as long as usual…

Never-before-seen footage from internal CMS meetings!

Would you like to take a sneak peak into life at CMS? Here are some short clips from two crucial internal meetings from June 2012, right before we announced the discovery of a new Higgs-like boson.

The first meeting was the "Higgs to two photons" channel's unblinding, where the CMS Collaboration saw the results of a "blind" analysis for the first time. Read more on this procedure: http://cms.web.cern.ch/news/blinding-and-unblinding-analyses

The second meeting was an approval talk of the same channel with a "top-up", i.e. the addition of new data freshly collected by the CMS detector.

Melting of Upsilon mesons in collisions of lead nuclei

In 2011, CMS presented early evidence that Upsilon (Υ) particles produced in lead-lead collisions “melt” as a consequence of interacting with the hot nuclear matter created in these heavy-ion interactions. CMS has since updated and extended this result using additional data collected in the 2011 heavy-ion run, and the observation now has a significance of greater than 5σ (or 5 standard deviations), the gold standard for claiming a discovery in high-energy physics…
