Scotland Photowalk 2015220Here is the official Event for the 2014 Donegal Photowalk. The kickoff will be Saturday morning, probably around 9am, however,  there will be people out much earlier to catch the sunrise, that's for sure. Some of us will even be there already on Thursday and Friday. (A good place to find the earlybirds is probably the local bar scene).  Please note that you don't have to confirm a booking or anything. Whoever shows up will be welcome.  If you can join us only for one day, Saturday or Sunday, that'll be fine, too, of course. We'll make sure to announce tour details and meeting points soon.  We hope to see you all there. And if someone has good connections to the weather gods, please let them know that we'd prefer the "no rain" option.  Cheers Athena, John & AndyDonegal Photowalk 20142014-09-27 09:00:0029

But please add your comment in the comment section after you have posted them. *And if you are the one who failed to complete the mission and are thinking you are going to do it again next year, you can add your fav one you took for the project here!* One last thing: I have made this event "public." Week 14/26: Architecture
#BWProject26 | Curated by +Tisha Montgomery +Brandon Luk +Lauri Novak +Al Chris

Tisha has already seen a sneak preview of this as I forgot she follows me on Twitter... but this is the edited version with better shadow definition.

This is the "Sail Bridge" in Swansea, South Wales about a 30 minute drive from me. It is also known as the Millennium FootBridge though to me that honour belongs to the bridge in London as it actually opened in 2000 - you can see my shot of that one here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/102165221944293633376/albums/5877735801801866961/6125259417143255858?pid=6125259417143255858&oid=102165221944293633376.

Anyway, this one didn't open until 2003. As the sun came and paid us a visit this week I went to shoot the sunset... more »

The Shard at Sunset...

There are times in ones life that regret can creep in ... photographing in the limited time I have this week in London is becoming one of those. As I snap I can hear myself thinking ..."why wasn't I this much into photography when I worked and lived here?"

Even though the London skyline has changed beyond recognition from when I was here it still had iconic buildings to be shot .. now we have newer iconic ones such as this.

Pastel Sunset

So last night was only the second time this month I've had the opportunity to get my camera out and go shoot. The restrictions have been for mixed reasons ...
 - some due to the weather
 - some due to family commitments
 - and some due to my training for my grading

I feel grotty in my head that I haven't got out but sometimes you just have to take what the world throws at you and make lemonade.

This image is from a local'ish beach and I loved the reflections going on and  really wanted to see what it would look like as a long exposure. Hmm.. not bad, even if I do say so myself :)

Again my camera has reminded me that it is ageing and that it doesn't like to do LE's anymore... which is a shame because I do.

Mindfulness

Anyone in my circles practice Mindfulness on a regular basis or just use the Headspace (see link) or "Insight Timer" apps?

I'd be interested to chat and find out more - either here or privately.

Stuart - happy to try anything - D :-)

I'm probably late to this ball game ...

But Google are hell bent on messing up a system that 'sort of works' and replace it with a system that clearly doesn't work for the vast majority of comments I've read.

What am I talking about? The newly dreadful "+Google Photos"

Come on +Trey Ratcliff +Chrysta Rae +Colby Brown and other big hitting photographers on Google - surely you guys can get them to listen? Or at least get them to fix everything first...!

I shared a B&W shot of this the other day and still really like that more than this one ... However, the sunset was such a golden marmalade orange colour that I have to share one from the other side.

Does anyone of my followers use the Lumenzia add in panel for Photoshop by +Greg Benz ?

If so I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I'm looking to commit cash to this or another panel and at the moment am leaning towards this but would like first hand knowledge if you have it?

Thanks to the folks over at http://skyworks.co.uk/ I get to be able to share the country where I live via a unique (to me at least) perspective.

Watch this short, 3min, video to see why I love where I live.

+Joel Tjintjelaar shared about this last week.

I had already contacted my MEP but now you can as well... and easily. Just click through and fill the form.

If we don't destroy this idea then we won't be able to take photographs of well known landmarks and as it is, the right to photograph is already questioned enough by the police. Don't give them more ammo.

Me Likee

Me Want

Simply put an adapter that fits to your phone - Android and / or Apple - and takes standard DSLR lenses and turns your 3 / 5 / 8Mp camera into a beast of a camera.

Sure there is already the Sony QX series but I'm told they are clunky and very quirky. If you own a smartphone from Android or Apple and already have any micro 4-3rd lenses then for an extra $300 this, to me anyway, is a no brainer. And I feel certain adapters can be found for other lenses.

So sad to hear the news that a young lady has lost her life walking too close to the cliff face at one of my most favourite of all places to shoot.

My thoughts go out to her family and friends ...

 - what will keep you interacting with me?

To my regulars and long standing followers..
 - bore da, sut dych chi??
 - apologies for any absences but what can I do to make your morning / day / night better?

Ble mae heulwen?

Or translated from my pidgen Welsh that's "Where's my sunshine?" After a lovely day where I was stuck inside at my desk I was hoping to get out tonight for some serious sunset shooting in nice light. Dropped my youngest at his youth group 10 pin bowling event and headed down the beach... along the way a few drops of rain and these dirty clouds!

Still, I like how this one turned out and I did get some quiet time and not even dog walkers were out braving these elements.

Nature vs Man vs Nature...

In reality, nature always wins out. Doesn't matter what we do it finds a way to compensate. So far ... trouble is, we keep accelerating our changes to the degree that man is starting to win.

And that's not right.

In The Elements
Make treating yourself a priority and always remember your life is happening now. Don't put off all your dreams and pleasures to another day. In any balanced personal definition of success there has to be a powerful element of living life in the present.
~ Mireille Guiliano

Compositionally this isn't the best I've done but it isn't the worst either. But what I loved about this is the play of light along the left hand side of this image.

What was better still was getting out into the elements this morning whilst my family were still sleeping and getting some time just to myself.

And I've just discovered another reason, +Philz Coffee, why I need to return to America and in particular New York. Which also means I have to tag in +Shelly Kay as a local (I believe) is it as good as I hear?

Share your caffeinated shots with the Brew Crew +Jason Kowing +Maki Silberberg +Sairam Sundaresan and me +Stuart Dyckhoff

Does anybody know of a replacement for googleplussuomi.com ? It appears that the domain is up for sale which means I can no longer link folks to my images in an order I desire - or that they then pick an alternative order once at the site.

I realise that +Jari Huomo provided that service free and perhaps the simple cost of hosting it was too much for an individual. For the time it was up though I want to thank Jari for the service and his generosity in hosting it.

Cheers.

Spring is Sprung

Took a stroll in our local "country house" estate yesterday with the family. Clearly the grounds folk have been working hard at clearing away the ill and old growth and as yet the newer growth from planting hasn't taken hold to show its beauty. Consequently there wasn't much on display except lots of daffodils, some bluebell shoots and the odd tree with a bud or two on it.

It will be interesting to return when the leaves are out and life is abundant - even the tree that I shot a few years back that has become my most popular image ever (http://bit.ly/1HvrCkL) was looking in a sorry state. Is it just that spring hasn't arrived yet? Or has it finally begun to sprung?

Week 7/26: Umbrella
#BWProject26 | Curated by +Tisha Montgomery +Brandon Luk +Lauri Novak +Alison Christensen

I'm late, I'm late, for a very important date ... not my usual fare but snapped this with my phone (old, poor quality camera unit) through the window of a bus just so I wouldn't fall too far behind on this theme.

For those that care, the brolly says "I heart rain".

“A large drop of sun lingered on the horizon and then dripped over and was gone, and the sky was brilliant over the spot where it had gone, and a torn cloud, like a bloody rag, hung over the spot of its going. And dusk crept over the sky from the eastern horizon, and darkness crept over the land from the east.”
John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath

Sunset Walk

Had a fab stroll with my family tonight at one of the most gorgeous spots I know that is only 15 minutes drive from our house.

Grabbed some sunset shots too but as 'the daughter' said ... "you have. like, 5 angles of this sun already can't we move now?"... I had to grab this golden hour shot on the fly.

Halfway through and at its zenith.

It visibly darkened but the clearest indicator was the drop in temperature.

The Battle of Britain
The B&W Project
Week 6/26: Inspired by TV/Film
#BWProject26  |  +Tisha Montgomery +Brandon Luk +Alison Christensen +Lauri Novak

Never was so much owed by so many to so few...

My choice of film was made for me when I came across the BoB memorial just round the corner from a hotel I was staying at last week. Otherwise I think this week would have been a bust.

The daytime light was too harsh and then by night these spotlights came on and made trying to capture the airman bursting out of the memorial pale into the background - so I've tried something a little different to try and make the airman stand out again.

Hopes you likes :)

Bright Lights Big City 2

This is the other image I got on the same night that I shared my shot of the big city lights the other day.

This is the Millennium Bridge that on its opening famoulsy had people hanging on due to, as I recall, resonance of peoples feet causing it to sway wildly. That was fixed. It is also becoming a cliche shot but the real cliche shot is actually about 30ft behind this point. From that angle you get this convergence of 3 bits of bridge...

I didn't go with that one mostly because there was a lot of traffic cones keeping folks away from damaged sections. Still, all that said, this is my version of the cliche - blue hour was very blue and most folks kept moving enough for my 25s exposure to blur them out. Just the one tourist in his pinky coloured trousers left behind!

Your Country Need You

That slogan is as appropriate today as it was when it was first coined - which I believe was the first world war. This shot of an airman in the Battle of Britain Memorial on The Embankment in London reminded me immediately of the old poster (although recent research would suggest the poster I refer to and phrase never existed together) that used to be around with this slogan on.

It was designed to be staring and pointing at you no matter what angle you looked at it from. The point being, this is just how I felt when I looked at this memorial.

It engendered feelings of thanks for the sacrifice of these brave men and women. Revulsion at the untold horrors of what must have gone on, yet ultimately the over-riding emotion was one of gratitude. Gratitude that I have never had to experience these feelings - gratitude or never knowingly taking another... more »

Gratitude that I have never had to experience these feelings - gratitude or never knowingly taking another person's life because of a decision by higher powers - gratitude that these people stepped up when their country needed them...

I salute them all and find it amazing that such a simple memorial can bring such powerful feelings to a happy go lucky chap such as I.___

"Bright Lights Big City"

Whilst I am hugely enjoying the photography I am getting to indulge in, there are a couple of things I'm noticing ... first is the fact that I'm missing my traditional landscapes and the realisation that I struggle with what to shoot when in the city.

Second realisation is that I don't miss London at all. Rude people ... arrogant cyclists that believe they can ignore traffic signals and worst of all is the fact that all the smokers have been pushed out on to the streets so now I have to walk through their crap.

Anyway, enjoy the lights.

I bring you #coffeethursday this week courtesy of Starbucks. I wouldn't normally darken their doors but they do a mean toasted panini and iced mango passion fruit smoothie (it's practically summer here) so why not?

And oh yes, that's Tower Bridge in the background.
