Ron Clifford2,975,810On the show +Kerry-Ann Lecky Hepburn   will share how she got started in astrophotography, explain her fabulous setup and show a few of her favourite deep sky images, (you don't want to miss this!). Afterwards, Kerry-Ann get into an example of her workflow for processing a deep sky astro image from pre processing (image stacking) to final post processing in Photoshop...... I have got to see this. "After getting my first telescope at the age of 11 and then my first film camera as a teenager I was hooked on the concept of taking pictures of deep space. Ever since then I have strived to improve my skills in astrophotography and in the process have produced images that have won awards, been featured in calendars, magazines, books and online publications such as Sky News POW and NASA APOD. While enjoying this hobby, I have a full time career as a meteorologist and  I love life with my husband and two girls". You can share two shots this time. *Please remember just two images!* 1) Your best or most favorite shot you took in the fourth quarter of 2012 (October- December). But please add your comment in the comment section after you have posted them. *And if you are the one who failed to complete the mission and are thinking you are going to do it again next year, you can add your fav one you took for the project here!* One last thing: I have made this event "public." Not Again....

This time it wasn't my fault. My 15yr old daughter "needed" to record herself and didnt't fix it into the tripod properly.

Tuesday Sunset Goodness

Posting this to cheer myself up ... today is a bit** damp and although the family is away I'm unlikely to see any sunshine today.

** In Welsh terms a bit = a year of rainfall in other locations. To say it's rained a bit would be an understatement :)

Tewkesbury Mill

Just back from a very pleasant and thoroughly relaxing week away with my wife and youngest child in Tewkesbury. This old mill was one of the sights and I managed to snag a decent sunset vista too.

Tewkesbury fact: Street fairs have been occurring since 1086 in this quaint olde English town which is full of character and quirkiness ... plus it floods on a regular basis.

Black Friday

aka Bah, Humbug

I've just spent the past hour or two unsubscribing from the mass of emails that I've received over the last few days with all & sundry wanting me to buy their 'x' product at their best ever discount....

Listen... if I needed it that bad I would search it out and what's more, I'd ask for opinions and even (shock horroe) do some research first. I'm not going to take your mis-guided approach to modern marketing as being anything but biased. But why make me suffer for something I never asked for?

"Bah Humbug indeed".

TL:DR - look at the pretty flower in B&W.

This is Llyn Idwal

At the far end shrouded in the mist (you'll have to trust me on this one or Google it) lies Clogwyn y Geifr and Twll Du (cliff of the goat and Black Hole) and I would imagine that if the sun had decided to come out that this sheltered spot is rather spectacular.

So glad I made the extra effort to walk the almost extra 1km (all uphill) to get here. Clearly, only myself and two other photogs felt so energetic at this early hour.

Another Place

I drove for 5hrs to capture this cast iron statue as part of the #europhotowalk weekend. Definitely a place to revisit and another tick to my photo bucket list.

I drove for 5hrs to capture this cast iron statue as part of the #europhotowalk weekend. Definitely a place to revisit and another tick to my photo bucket list.

I only went and chuffin passed my black belt pre-test.

Thank you Masters Sian and Wayne Humphries for all your patience and honesty - both are required in great measure for me.

Silent Watcher....

Sunday night I was up Gilfach Goch watching Jenna and her rugby team play Treorchy U18's with the U15's playing Gilfach... the U18's game finished under floodlights but we were also treated to a wonderful sunset. Well sort of, as those of you that know GG will know it to be nestled in a valley ... so no actual setting of the sun captured.

Hand held using my 70-200mm f4 and x2 extender with an effective focal length of 288mm. ISO 320 and a shutter speed of 1/320 (freaky right).

Aye, am reet chuffed

Today in the UK it is GCSE (aged 16 [ish]) results day ... I am so proud of my beautiful daughter and her results. Yes... she got straight A's, A*'s and a Distinction.

But do you know what? The precise marks / grades are not what is important. What is important is that she is happy with them. That she's happy the effort she put in for study and revision paid off. That she is happy to have far exceeded her own expectations and also exceeded some of her teachers expectations. Really, this is all anyone can ask - which is why today I didn't ask her friends "what grades did you get" but instead asked them "are you happy with the grades you got" and "are you happy that you exceeded your expectations". Some of her friends didn't fare so well overall but all of them were 'reet chuffed' with their efforts and... more »

After all , with 30+ years in work, I can assure any youngster that in reality all these exams do, at this age, is give you a great grounding for setting up your future. They certainly don't make it. They give you an understanding of preparation, study, revision, etc and opposed to being the end (even if you now opt to leave schooling) it is just the start of a journey and hopefully one that takes her (and you) as far as you want it to go.

Posting this to cheer myself up ... today is a bit** damp and although the family is away I'm unlikely to see any sunshine today.

** In Welsh terms a bit = a year of rainfall in other locations. To say it's rained a bit would be an understatement :)

Collections - meh

Personally, and it is only personally, I still don't like collections.

What's more, I don't like that G+ appears to have forced me to follow dozens of collections just because I follow a person. ...

So there has to be a way to turn this off en-masse? Anybody help me with this?

Give Me The Honey Dude

The bees were definitely out the other day as I wandered the gardens of Aberglasney House. - I have such problems grabbing bee shots though.

- either the wind blows
- the bee moves
- the bees is at the wrong angle
- etc...

but this one, for me, was spot on.

Is +Bench Saturday  #benchsaturday even a thing still?

I have to admit, I dropped out of the themes pretty much straight away as I could never compete with all the #hashtags - but one I used to enjoy watching and occasionally partaking of was #benchsaturday

Anyway ... took a stroll round a loacl'ish beauty spot recently and found this acorn leaf bench which I thought would be perfect for ... well, you know... #benchsaturday :)

A little experiment...

The #famlam went to a gorgeous old house the other day called Aberglasney House & Gardens.

I took just a few pictures, mostly flowers, which you can find by following the link to my Facebook page. Normally I wouldn't do this but it seems silly to upload them twice.

Anyway, please do go take a look and like the ones you like or even just like my page...  if you don't use FB then let me know and if I get enough shouts I'll post them up here as well.

Sgŵd Ddwli Isaf
-aka Lower Gushing Falls.

This, I think is a very easy to get to waterfall but due to the path being a little dodgy, especially when wet, and quite a steep initial climb I find so few tourists actually make their way to it after they've visited Sgŵd Gwladus (see my lasy post)..

It means I can find my spot. I can take my time. I can take as many or as few shots as I want and still not be in the way of anybody.

This is a two shot Long Exposure pano as my wide angle isn't wide enough (crop sensor) and then stitched together automagically within Lightroom. A couple of my usual tweaks and here it is ...

Thoroughly enjoyed my return visit to this magical place but resorted to a long exposure to eliminate unwelcome tourists :)

Did enjoy having most of my family along for company though even if the daughter moaned about all the walking.

Undecided

I recently shared this: https://plus.google.com/u/0/102165221944293633376/posts/gCdLFX4RrEk and said at the time that I hadn't had the opportunity to do any LE shots. Well, I'd somehow overlooked this particular image, which at 4s, is on the "just an LE" scale but LE all the same.

But I can't really decide which I prefer ... I'm edging towards the simplicity that the B&W conversion brings and the deliberate under exposure I added in post... after all it was a very sunny day just adds to the overall image.

But what say you?

Which image do you prefer and why?

Ouzoud Waterfalls
_http://www.moroccopedia.com/visit-ouzoud-falls/_

I loved this place and could have happily spent all day here. What I didn't like was the constant harrying of the "tour guide" that was foisted upon us. My advice ... by all means go on an organised trip to get there but ignore the guides on arrival and take the concrete paths and steps down to the falls - certainly far less dangerous and you still get to see all of the falls (and Barbary Apes) at your pace.

OK so the tour guide cost me the grand sum of 60Dhiram (less than £5) for the wife and I but the only time we actually needed him was because of the very slippery soil based path he took us down - the rest of his info we already knew.

Anyway - as a consequence I didn't get the opportunity for any long exposure shots or to find a spot I was really happy with ... still, I do... more »

The Pavilion @ Majorelle Gardens, Marrakech, Morocco.

It's amazing, when you look, what you find. Imagine this place, a riot of colours (and a lot of this blue) in amongst all the drab sandstone of the area. Getting to this place we decided to brave a taxi and in Marrakech you don't need to hail a taxi as they will toot you first. The chap wanted 60 Dhiram (approx £4.50) to take the two of us the 6km to this place. After a bit of haggling we agreed on 40 Dhiram (approx £3) and what ensued next was a fun filled drive with this cabbie personally (it seems) owning a tannery, camels, several shops, the taxi and more besides...!

Bahia Palace - Marrakech, Morocco.

Everytime i see a place like these there are several thoughts that run through my head ...

The first is this: wow the artwork, the design, the intricacy are all just stunning and in their heyday must have been stunning to view. And that was probably the intended perception.

My second thought is - what gives one person / family the right to waste so much money on themselves when the nation around them is in poverty or struggling just to have a roof over their heads. But then I stop myself before my thoughts become too dark.

Mind you, the cost to visit this place was a very reasonable 10 Dhiram which at the prevailing exchange rate was about £0.70p - at that price I'd visit daily if it was nearby :)

Koutoubia Mosque.

Been away for a few days with Mrs D. celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary. The only planned part about the trip was that it had to be ....

- somewhere we hadn't been before
- a direct flight from Cardiff or Bristol
- within our budget.

So we ended up with 4 days & nights in Marrakech in Morocco.

This is probably one of their best known landmarks as it towers over the central square (their other landmark) - decided to convert this to B&W so as to not let the bright blue sky overpower the image ... as it happened, there were a few wisps of cloud amidst the >30°C heat of the day.

As always - any questions on how I captured it, processed it welcome as well as any of your opinions about it.

*Thirty Years Ago Today ... *

It just also happened to be the hottest day that year ...

The intervening 30yrs have seen many a heartache and plenty of joy. The loss of both my parents, 5 babies lost but 3 gorgeous children from 26 down to 13. It's not always been plain sailing but promises are promises and we've worked through any issues and paid off our mortgage a good few years back...

I was never much good at romantic so instead of flowers we head off to Morocco later today for 4 days / nights without the children...

But still, that haircut of mine was a shocker :)

"Who you lookin at II?"

Birds of prey sat still doing their thing are so awesome to capture. I'd love to have a faster lens / better body that would capture them in flight and snap more frames per second so more would be in focus - or at least I stand a better chance of them being in focus.

At present my hit rate with my fr 70-200mm is approx 1 in 6 being reasonably in focus but nearer 1 in 9 for that moment of magic.

You have to admire the gall....!

This is NOT my photo - but I do know the person that took it and we are in the same BADASS ** group.

Just have a look at their BIN price. Reminds me a little of Peter Lik and the adage of 'in it to win it'. In this case, if you don't ask you won't get. I suspect someone might purchase this but it will be an auction offer of far lesser value than the BIN.

This is my father's rose .. a shot I captured shortly after his passing in 2012. Although it is a beautiful pinky red I decided to make use of +Joel Tjintjelaar new B&W panel to help me enhance it and show some of its textures.

Marrakesh, Morocco

So who's been to Morocco or more specifically Marrakesh and can advise on what shouldn't be missed?

I get to spend the best part of almost 4 days there mid June with my honey (for our 30th WA) and ALL suggestions taken into consideration. Also any tips from folks that have 'survived' the souks, hammams, etc are all welcome.

Any 'must grab photo' suggestions also gratefully taken on board :)

Urbex Sunset

This is a set of abandoned farm buildings less than 2 miles - as the crow files - from where I live. It's crazy to think that most of the land around here was all green fields or farm land no more than 30yrs ago but since then our ever increasing population has forced a change.

Now the land that belonged to this farm is all housing... over the trees in the back of the image is our local prison and soon even this set of buildings will be erased for a new development of some form.

Shiner

Got a beauty of a shiner developing on my left eye. It is all courtesy of a sparring match in my federations annual UK Open Tang Soo Do Tournament yesterday.

Still, I did come away with a bronze medal in the Over 41's category which had me, at 52½, the 2nd oldest in the group and most of the ones I competed against were at the bottom end of the age range

Go hard or go home I say.

Tang soo everyone.

Experimenting

TL:DR - testing for noise with ND16 - thoughts appreciated :)

This is Bracelet Bay in South Wales (UK). The sun was very strong to the left of the image and climbing ... I guess this was just prior to 10am.

Anyway, I stuck on my +Formatt-Hitech INRD 16 stop ND Grad and was still able to get a 6 min exposure (400 seconds). This has resulted in an ultra smooth sea and some distortion in the clouds as the wind was practically zero at the time.

What I was most interested in was firstly how long an exposure I could get without seriously changing my aperture or other settings - so this was f/5.6 at ISO100 - and secondly to how bad noise affected my lens and camera combination when pushing the limits. Previously I used the EFS 10-22mm and that on my Canon 60D would generate noise so bad that after 4 minutes of exposure it was nigh on useless as an... more »

Previously I used the EFS 10-22mm and that on my Canon 60D would generate noise so bad that after 4 minutes of exposure it was nigh on useless as an image.

I'd always presumed the noise element was down to the camera body pure and simple. Well all other things being equal and with my replacement EFS 10-18mm lens on (half the price of the 10-22) you can see for yourself. My very unscientific test, seems to imply that the cheaper but newer (in terms of it is historically a newer lens from Canon) lens is far better at handling noise with my 60D than the old. Hmmm.

I'll grant this is not the best composition but I tried to get the line of rocks on the left to lead the eye to the water.

Thoughts? Anyone?___

Caswell Bay

I truly am lucky to live in such a beautiful place but a place that I malign quite often die to the seemingly incessant rain.

This image, shot just yesterday, is to remind me that we do get gorgeous days with blue sky and little fluffy bits of cloud. What made the day better is that it was me and a few dogs and their owners here yesterday. Give it a month and this place will be swarming with day trippers and holiday makers.

My girl is the blonde haired one (more clearly seen) in the lower photo, back row, middle. But in the upper image she's 4th from right... back row again.

p.s. note the photographers name :)

p.p.s. we're all ignoring the wrong spelling of border of course

Waiting for Sunset

Took the new (read replacement for the daughter damaged one) lens for a real sunset, hopefully... well the sun, colours, etc certainly obliged just prior to sunset.

However the sunset itself disappeared behind a blanket of clouds that came in and obscured everything and there was also, as a consequence, no golden hour shots. Fortunately one of the bunch I met up with had brought some wire wool along so I got my first ever wire wool shoot out of the way.

BTW, the lens before anyone asks is the Canon EFS 10-18mm IS

TL:DR: Pre sunset good, wire wool shots for golden hour.

The Return

I originally shot this rock formation in early 2014 (see here: http://bit.ly/1RD4bKp ), in fact almost precisely 2 years ago. Today I returned to it with some fellow BADASS members  (you'll have to ask if you want to know) and celebrated my new lens with the below as my first ever image.

New lens you say? Well strictly speaking it is the replacement for my daughter damaged 10-22mm that met its untimely end late December. The reviews assure me that not only is this lens lighter and cheaper it is also much sharper and has IS to boot.. though for this LE that was disabled.

Not quite the same angle and the sun didn't come out to play but I had fun all the same. Hope you likes it too.

Mumbles Lighthouse - Fish Eye View :)

This could be alternatively titled "Problems with Kit lenses #36" - when you need you get near and far in focus there are two basic ways to do it. First is to use hyperfocal distance focussing but when you are so close to the first aspect this doesn't work so you have to go to option two.

Option two is to take one image (or set) focussed on the near item and then a second focussed on the more distant object and then blend together.

The problem with this on kit lenses, certainly fro Canon, is the a kit lens typically moves when it re-focuses causing the two images to have ever so slightly different aspects to them making blending a tough job. Still, I do like how this has turned out.

Caerphilly Castle Sunset Pano with starburst.

I really wanted to capture this shot but a few things presented themselves as obstacles to be overcome.

 - first is I am reduced to my 18-55mm kit my lens.
 - this produces a lot of noise especially in darker areas with bright spots around it.
 - to get the sunburst, one really needs to change the F-stop to something small which again introduces noise
 - next is the lens isn't very wide angle at all especially not on a crop sensor body so had to go with 4 shots to get this all in rather than 2
 - last (apart from processing) I felt there was too much difference between light and dark areas so went with shooting 5 brackets for each shot, combined these into a pseudo HDR and then merged the 4 into the pano you see.

Overall I feel I've done a good job with what I had and am pleased with the end result but there is one area that still bugs me. No prizes for guessing which one.

What it does show is the sheer scale of this castle and its defenses - certainly it is one of the largest still standing (mostly) castles that aren't occupied that I know of.___

Caerphilly Castle Sunset

There was supposed to have been a dragon (see here: http://cadw.gov.wales/fun/historicadventures/meet-the-dragon/?lang=en) but when we turned up they'd hidden it away ... so instead I chose to hang around for sunset and was happy that I did.

Golitha Falls

The wife and I recently spent a weekend (Valentines as it happens) away without the children in the depths of Cornwall.

This set of falls is not far from Jamaica Inn (as popularised by Daphne du Maurier) ... in fact it is 6 miles away. Whislt I still mourn the lack of use of my EFS 10-22mmm lens which would have added a little extra scene setting to this shot I find that I love the way the lights plays on the upper section ...

This is one section of the upper falls at Golitha, Bodmin Moor in Cornwall.

Polperro Puppy

I managed to spend Valentines weekend with my love and a couple of very good friends... we even managed to leave our teenage children behind (and we still returned to intact houses)

We spent the weekend in and around the coast of Cornwall and one of the gorgeous little villages we visited was Polperro where we found this 8 week old puppy and what a sweetie he was too.

Stir Crazy

What does this phrase mean to you?

For me, at the moment it simply means complete and utter frustration that I haven't been able to get out an about with my camera since just after Christmas. There have been some good reasons why I haven't and chief amongst them are Gertrude, Henry and Imogen closely followed by general family busyness, illness and a broken lens.

So instead - have this delight taken back in late 2014 whilst on the European Photowalk led by +Athena Carey +Andy Bitterer +John Dunne    - it is an image of "The Breeches", a sea stack by Crohy Head off the coast of Donegal, Ireland.

Southerndown Beaches & Cliffs

Truly one of the places in this world I love visiting... again and again.

The observant among you may spot the scenes of some of my still photographs and the extra observant (or Dr Who fans) may recognise the cliffs from several episodes.

Loving this ...

My little country of just 3 million inhabitants is in Rough Guides top 10 to visit. We come in at number 8, but hey, anywhere in the top 10 is awesome.

Come visit and if you do, give me a shout so I can show you some of my favourite parts.

Ogmore Castle
Pre Sunrise

There are benefits to winter mornings... it mans you can get up later and still be in plenty of time for sunrise.

Had fun with my first outing this month with my camera even though I'm still reduced to using my kit lens due to my precious daughter putting my landscape lens through the wrecker... oh and word to the wise, when your inner voice says "put your wellies on" then listen to it. Instead I wore my walking boots and ended up with damp feet as I had to wade back across the now submerged spit of land I was on due to the incoming tide!!!

This time it wasn't my fault. My 15yr old daughter "needed" to record herself and didnt't fix it into the tripod properly.
