Up periscope! Finally got a decent Internet connection here in Namibia, so I thought I'd share a few photos. I have another six days still, and I have a backlog of images to go through, but here's some of my favorites so far. Now, off to bed, as we're tracking black rhino tomorrow morning! Weyhey! See you all again soon!

I might be a little behind on this, so forgive me if this is old news, but I just found out that Google Reader is being retired, so I've just spent a little time looking for an alternative RSS reader. I love the look and Zite on the iPad, but it doesn't have a desktop version. I also tried Flipboard but it drove me insane. I guess I'm just not wired for Flipboard, although I know it's very popular. I don't know if Feedly will be the answer, but I like the look of it, and they have Desktop and iPad/iPhone covered which is great! Most of all, they are going to migrate Google Reader feeds to Feedly seamless when they pull the plug. I like seamless! :)

West Bay Cliffs
This shot is actually a JPG that I've just pushed through Silver Efex. The colour version features an extremely warm sun sitting just at the top of the cliffs in the upper left of the frame, but the Black and White makes the cliffs the subject instead.

Here is another beautiful Antarctic mill-pond. This is in the aptly named Paradise Harbour, also known as Paradise Bay. The scale is difficult to grasp here. That blue line across the middle is a huge glacier. After I shot this, another Zodiac sped across the bay to the front of the glacier and was hardly visible. I wouldn't have known it was there if I hadn't seen it go there myself.
And as it's a reflection, I might as well include #Mirrormonday +Mirrors and Reflections curated by +Gemma Costa and +Elizabeth Edwards

Here's another iceberg shot from Antarctica last year. The right side of the berg looks like a Roman Centurion to me. Do you see it? This was printed and used by OFFSET (www.offset.com) at their launch event. OFFSET is a new stock agency created by Shutterstock. I've entrusted my image library with them, so I was proud to have one of my images included in their launch material.

Just putting the finishing touches on a new product I'm working on. Out of my need for something exactly like this, I've built a fully customizable Canon EOS 5D Mark III Viewfinder Mockup Tool. It's a Photoshop PSD file, but every element is a vector graphic, and I've included lots of presets as well as ability to modify any part of the frame, including simulating the red glowing viewfinder grid and focus points, and change any setting that the camera allows you to, even down to battery levels and exposure compensation etc. I have to put this aside for a few more days as I finish my next Craft & Vision ebook, but I'm looking forward to using this to create some of the artwork I need.
Let me ask, if you are a creator, educator or filmmaker, what would you pay for a tool like this? Don't just tell me free, or $10 because you want it cheap. Seriously, this can ... more »

I rarely shoot blue skies, but when presented with a scene like this, it's hard to resist. You gotta love a sunburst! Caused of course by the aperture blades when stopped down some. This was shot at f/11. Enterprise Island, Antarctica 2012.

Woo hoo! Lightroom 5 Beta is here! And here are some of the new features...
Advanced Healing Brush – Easily remove objects and fix defects—even those with irregular shapes such as threads or lint—with a single brush stroke. Take precise control over what's being removed as you make unwanted objects just disappear.
Upright – Straighten tilted images with a single click. Upright analyzes images and detects skewed horizontal or vertical lines. You choose one of four correction methods, and Upright can even straighten images where the horizon is hidden.
Radial Gradient – Lead your viewer's eye through your images with more flexibility and control. The radial gradient tool lets you create off-center vignette effects, or multiple vignette areas within a single image.
Offline editing with Smart Previews – Easily work with images without bringing yo... more »

I can't wait to show you this, so here's next week's Podcast, a few days early. I put together a 10 minute video of images and video clips from my three Antarctica and South Georgia voyages with Aurora Expeditions in Nov-Dec 2012. Grab a cup of coffee, turn up the audio, and take a look. Don't forget to change the quality to full 1080p HD video too!

I finally got over to the Nogawa Cherry Blossom light-up last night. I've wanted to visit for a few years now, since seeing my friend +David Lee's beautiful photography from there in 2009. This set is really homage to David, as his photo is one of my favorite photos of all time. This place is magical though. I didn't realize until I got there that they make the footbridges one-way, and don't allow you stop stop on them. To get most of these I stood at a corner of a bridge, where the police didn't move me on, and just waited for interest poses. David's policeman or security guard with the megaphone wouldn't leave my mind, so a couple have them, and I picked out a few other gestures that I liked too.

To MBP Podcast Subscribers
I just wanted to let you know that following an update in the iTunes requirements for Podcasts, I decided to switch to a new server for the audio files. The change unfortunately means that you may now have duplicate Podcast episodes in your iTunes feed. I've made another change that means that hopefully this will be the last time, even if we change servers again, but you will have to go through and delete the duplicates manually this time if they annoy you.
If you like to have previous episodes archived in iTunes, they should still be there, and you can just select and delete the duplicate episodes without downloading them again. They will come back though, if you right click the feed and select "show all available episodes". If you don't have a lot of previous episodes that you want to keep, the easiest way to clean up the feed is to... more »

And here's the second of my two leopard seal shots from Antarctica last year. It was the only time my zodiac got near one of these beauties in three expeditions. Just look at that mouth! You can tell these guys eat penguins!
