"... The hypocrisy of Obama’s statement is staggering. Having backed a putsch led by figures such as Yarosh to install an unelected puppet regime in Kiev, Washington and its allies present themselves as selfless defenders of Ukraine’s sovereignty, when, in fact, they are seeking to turn Ukraine into a forward base for diplomatic and military provocations aimed at isolating and ultimately dismembering Russia. Within Ukraine, the new government is taking its orders from the International Monetary Fund and Wall Street and preparing to unleash a program of savage austerity measures against the working class. ..."

In addition, the NYPD will confer with Microsoft on their use of the DAS and any innovative revisions of the software that comes from real-time use. If there is a spiritual lesson to be learned from the Sandy Hook shooting, perhaps it is that everyone, even Adam Lanza, is essentially human, was once an innocent child worthy of compassion and love before something happened to them.  What was that something?  Difficult to say with all the different kinds of assaults we now face in the world-- physical, chemical, emotional, cultural, social.  But, if we can learn to value kindness and non-violation/non-injury even more than we do now from such tragedies, perhaps the losses will not, ultimately, be as meaningless as they seem at first.

Rep. Pompous may have intended sarcasm, but the U.S. makes Russia look better and better and not just for exiled NSA worker(s).

"... Snowden's "only apparent qualification," Pompeo wrote, "is his willingness to steal from his own government and then flee to that beacon of First Amendment freedoms, the Russia of Vladimir Putin." ..."

So, maybe we should be an even brighter beacon of first amendment freedom by allowing Snowden to speak, virtually, at SXSW?  But nnnooooooooo....

"... I am not backing down on medical marijuana; I am doubling down.

I should add that, although I've taken some heat for my reporting on marijuana, it hasn't been as lonely a position as I expected. Legislators from several states have reached out to me, eager to inform their own positions and asking to show the documentary to their fellow lawmakers.

I've avoided any lobbying, but of course it is gratifying to know that people with influence are paying attention to the film. One place where lawmakers saw a long clip was Georgia, where the state House just passed a medical marijuana bill by a vote of 171-4. Before the legislative session started, most people didn't think this bill had a chance.

More remarkable, many doctors and scientists, worried about being ostracized for even discussing the potential of marijuana, called me confidentially to share... more »

America's proud tradition of muck-raking journalism, such as it was, arguably began with Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" which revealed conditions in the meat packing industry in the U.S.  Such journalism has now been made illegal in Idaho, with other states likely to follow soon since this is part of the ALEC agenda.

What if someone, a "bad guy" of course, knows stuff that might come out in a courtroom trial that would be damaging to the secrets we've been keeping from the public?  What if their testimony was potentially so explosive it could blow holes the size of skyscrapers in the edifice of official lies we've successfully built up over decades that would be impossible to replace with new lies?  Surely, it would be okay to kill such a person without a trial then, would it not?

Many thousands are in want of common necessaries; hundreds of thousands are in want of common comforts, sir.''

``Are there no prisons?'' asked Scrooge.

``Plenty of prisons,'' said the gentleman, laying down the pen again.

``And the Union workhouses?'' demanded Scrooge. ``Are they still in operation?''

``They are. Still,'' returned the gentleman, `` I wish I could say they were not.''

``The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour, then?'' said Scrooge.

``Both very busy, sir.''

"...There was one dynamic in the model, however, that offered some hope. Werner termed it “resistance” – movements of “people or groups of people” who “adopt a certain set of dynamics that does not fit within the capitalist culture”. According to the abstract for his presentation, this includes “environmental direct action, resistance taken from outside the dominant culture, as in protests, blockades and sabotage by indigenous peoples, workers, anarchists and other activist groups”.

Serious scientific gatherings don’t usually feature calls for mass political resistance, much less direct action and sabotage. But then again, Werner wasn’t exactly calling for those things. He was merely observing that mass uprisings of people – along the lines of the abolition movement, the civil rights movement or Occupy Wall Street – represent the likeliest source of “friction”to slow down an economic mach... more »

"... Defeated at the polls, the anti-democratic faction of the opposition prepared for a new attempt at destabilizing the elected government, and promoted relatively small, but often violent student protests in early February.  They then called for a massive protest on February 12, Venezuela’s Youth Day in the center of Caracas.  The demonstrations have been accompanied by a social media campaign that has spread misinformation in an attempt to depict the Maduro administration as a violent dictatorship instead of a popular elected government. Images of police violence from other countries and past protests – some several years old – have been presented on social media as having occurred in recent days in Venezuela. A YouTube video that has been watched by almost 2 million viewers presents a one-sided portrayal of the situation and falsely states that the Venezuelan government controls all radioand tel... more »

"... Sound too grim to be true? Let's look at some solutions on the positive side. The way out of all this is to grow your own food or at least buy as much as you can from local farmers and CSAs. Any food acquired through mainstream corporate sources is likely to be intentionally engineered, laced and packaged with incredibly toxic poisons ranging from heavy metals to hormone disrupting packaging containers. But food grown by honest farmers provides genuine nourishment, not death.

In fact, the future of human civilization almost certainly belongs exclusively to those who either grow their own food or make arrangements for others to grow it for them. The factory-made food consumed by the masses is quite truly a poison delivery system that has no purpose other than mass disease, death and profit.

If you wish to avoid being a victim of this system, you must avoid its products.... more »

A well-documented case of industry targeting academics when their scientific findings are bad for their business.

"...Fussy critiques of scientific experiments have become integral to what is known as the “sound science” campaign, an effort by interest groups and industries to slow the pace of regulation. David Michaels, the Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health, wrote, in his book “Doubt Is Their Product” (2008), that corporations have developed sophisticated strategies for “manufacturing and magnifying uncertainty.” In the eighties and nineties, the tobacco industry fended off regulations by drawing attention to questions about the science of secondhand smoke. Many companies have adopted this tactic. “Industry has learned that debating the science is much easier and more effective than debating the policy,” Michaels wrote. “In field after field, year after year, ... more »
