Double Dipping, Vermont
So much office work to do today but I couldn't pass up prime stream photography conditions; swollen rivers, soft light and dead calm. Since the foreground is the outflow of the falls I had to play with a variety of shutter speeds and lots of attempts to get the right flow and enough visual interest to anchor the comp. Weather looks pretty epic for these types of shots for at least the next couple of days.
As always thanks for taking a peek and feel free to share.

Face of Oneonta, Columbia River Gorge, OR
During my trip out to the PNW earlier in the month I made a quick detour down to the Columbia River Gorge to shoot the famed waterfalls and canyons cloaked in vibrant green. I'm not sure what I was expecting but it was far busier and accessible than I had imagined it would be. I didn't have too much time to get deep into the gorge backcountry, so I'm sure there are lots of off the beaten path spots further from the road system. It's always weird to shoot in a location you've seen tons of images from. In fact, it was a bit surreal finding little heard paths down to popular comps. I was half expecting someone to come collect a toll for shooting ;)
Regardless it was a fun experience and place I'd like to more fully explore and shoot one day. I tried my best to put a new spin on some of the iconic places, as im... more »

Tree of Light, Stowe, Vermont
Just wrapped up teaching our annual Spring in Vermont Workshop yesterday afternoon. The crew was awesome, super fun, enthusiastic and worked hard to make some great images. We parted ways exhausted physically (sunrise is very early this time of year) but at the same time energized photographically. We hit plenty of iconic Vermont scenes in some golden light but, as is usually the case, a shot like this is what resonates with me the longest. Couldn't help clogging up the road to work this amazing backlit apple tree as we explored the myriad backroads of VT. Never pass by something that grabs your eye!
There's still some space in the Autumn Tour, so shoot me a message if you're interested in coming to sample some Vermont goodness this fall. www.greenmtnphotoworkshops.com

Ruby Beach Magic, Olympic National Park
In case you didn't click over to the Dreamscapes Blog yesterday here's the image that accompanies my post about getting the most out of a photo workshop. Ian Plant and I had a killer group of folks and a lot of fun teaching and making images in Olympic. This is from the last night of the workshop on Ruby Beach. We got a bit lucky as these were some of the only clouds we saw all week.
For those of you interested in workshops I've still got some spaces in my upcoming Autumn in Vermont and Wild Acadia programs this October. Hit link for more details. http://greenmtnphotoworkshops.com/

Rainforest Overlord, Hoh Rainforest, Olympic National Park
Been super busy since returning from the Pacific Northwest last week. Picking through some images and finally getting caught up on some processing. High thin clouds filtered just enough of the direct afternoon sunlight to bring the new spring green to life. I much prefer shooting in the forest during these types of conditions rather than heavy overcast which tends to be flat and lifeless. Here the light passes through the translucent foliage and radiates warmth and vibrance.

Split Rock Peekaboo, Olympic National Park, WA
Well we wrapped up the Olympic workshop on Sunday. We had a great group and a lot of fun prowling around this magnificent park. We didn't get much in the way of clouds, in fact if was crystal clear the majority of the time. Despite the high pressure we managed a couple of nights with some good light. When the skies don't cooperate I try to find something to give the image a little flare, pun fully intended folks.
Headed back to Vermont tomorrow and then next weekend the Spring in Vermont workshop starts. There are a couple of last minute spaces if anyone's interested in joining us.
As always thanks for taking a peek. Btw, processing on my laptop so not 100% on the color...

Cloaked in Mystery, Quinault Rainforest, Olympic NP
Just a quick post before the Olympic Workshop begins in a few short hours. This is from a scouting mission yesterday to the Quinault Rainforest. Things are greening up nicely here, although a bit on the sunny side for the next few days. I love these moss draped maples and alders, especially the way the moss glows with a little backlight. Will hopefully be able to post a few more images during the workshop.

Please consider helping friend and colleague +Jerry Monkman a New England based conservation photographer and all around awesome dude and crusader for all things good and green raise funds to support his most recent project. Jerry will be shooting and producing a 30 min film on the proposed Northern Pass project, a a 180-mile long electricity transmission line project which would bisect the state of NH and threatens some of the most iconic and wild viewsheds in all of New England. Last Vestige of Light, Lake Champlain, Vermont
Here's another from my Lake Champlain series. Wasn't entirely convinced the light would go off like this but sure glad I waited it out. I like to arrive at my locations with plenty of time to scout, working several compositional angles in case the good stuff happens in unexpected parts of the sky. I had originally wanted to shoot in a more southerly direction and was hoping for some nice sidelight just before sunset. When that didn't happen I knew I had a backup comp looking to the northwest. A little, un seen gap provided for a great display of color well after sunset.

The Spillway, Lake Champlain, Vermont
Here's another from my Lake Champlain series, taken slightly after Reach for the Light, once the sun had dipped below a bank of clouds. The key to this shot was equal parts timing and persistence. I was really drawn to the pattern the water made as it washed over these foreground rocks. I used a moderately slow shutter speed (.5 sec. @ f14, ISO 320) to capture some motion blur but maintain the vital texture. Anything more than .8 of a second resulted in nothing but a white blob in the foreground. Of course experimentation is key because every wave is a little different and results in a different look.
I honestly don't think I would have succeeded with this back in my film days. For one, I'd never have gotten this fast a shutter speed using Fuji Velvia (ISO 50) and frankly I would have quit trying the shot well b... more »

Selling some beautiful Canon L series glass and thought I'd give you all first crack at it.
Two lenses: EF 50mm f1.2L and EF 24-70 f2.8L. Both are in excellent condition, perfect glass and functionality. The 24-70 has been a workhorse lens and shows some sign of use (scratches on the lens hood for example) but is otherwise perfect. The 50 f1.2 is in mint condition and has seen very little use. Both include the original boxes and packaging. Price includes shipping within the lower 48.
50mm f1.2L $1,200
24-70mm f2.8L $950
Message me if interested.

Reach for the Light, Lake Champlain, Vermont
Mud season is in full swing in my part of the world. Which, if you're not familiar with mud season, of course means axle sucking mud to rival some third world countries and a whole lot of not so pretty landscape opps in the interior. Since living in VT I've stuck pretty close to the mountains most of the time. But as many here know, or at least have surmised over the past year or so, I've turned a great deal of my attention toward Lake Champlain, which is a great location before the rest of the state "greens" up.
I've been "informally" working on a project (the details of which are still a little un-cooked) for the past year and a half or so. I'm at the point now where I'm looking to ramp things up to a full court press and produce a significant body of work to be used to cele... more »

Missing Pieces, Lake Champlain, Vermont
Winter is slowing losing its icy grasp on the north country. I spent a wonderful evening last night sitting on the shore of Lake Champlain watching the light disappear over the Adirondacks as stoneflies and other midges emerged in early anticipation of finding spring love. As is usually the case with these high wispy clouds the best color came well after the sun set. A long exposure was used to smooth out the less than pretty texture on the lake's surface as well as allow some reflected blue to build into the foreground.
As always thanks for taking a peek. Happy Spring!

Wonderland Light, Acadia National Park, Maine
Getting pounded with some "spring" snow today in northern Vermont so I'm spending some time going through images from previous trips. This is from last autumn over in Acadia National Park in Maine, one of my all time favorite places to shoot in the northeast. Was drawn to the wonderful red huckleberry leaves being backlit by the rising sun. The toughest part of pulling this off was finding a graphic element around which to anchor the composition, and then getting in position for an exposure before the sun exited the top of the frame.
I'll be leading a workshop in Acadia October 16-20, 2013. There are still spaces left, click here for more details http://bit.ly/YmhlTH

Winter Woods, Green Mountains, Vermont
Working through some images from earlier in the winter and thought I'd share this one. Although it probably won't garner a lot of attention online because it's not a dramatic sunrise/sunset with big, in your face color it does represent the quieter, more contemplative type of imagery that got me excited about photography in the first place. These kinds of images don't jump right out and grab you. You've got to slow down and really learn to see before they start to reveal themselves.
For me, the key to this image is the balance between the larger aspen trunks on the left and the smaller, more distant ones on the right. The trunks also act to anchor and provide much needed structure to an otherwise busy and chaotic scene.
As always, thanks for taking a peek.

Island Apocalypse, Lake Champlain, Vermont
It was a killer weekend weather wise, warm sunshine, temps in the high 40s, great spring skiing conditions and a killer sunset on Friday night (which unfortunately I missed due to family obligations). Things looked somewhat promising yesterday afternoon so I made the trek out to this spot in anticipation of some good color to light up this insanely ominous looking clouds. It quickly became obvious that wouldn't happen so I switched gears and started working comps for black and white conversions. Diggin' this one.

Three's a Crowd, Lake Champlain, Vermont
Here's another from my Lake Champlain series, this from early in the winter as Super Storm Sandy blew its way out of the northeast. Crazy wind gusts (40-50 mph) and wicked spray made for some difficult shooting conditions this particular evening. I had to wipe down the lens/filter setup after every exposure. Had hoped the sky would explode in color but kind of like how the touches of pink play in a scene dominated by blues and gray.
By the time I packed it in and started back to the car I was completely coated in a layer of ice from the accumulation of frozen spray.
Anyway thanks for taking a peek.

Fissures, Lake Champlain, Vermont
Winter is starting to finally loosen it's icy grasp here in the north country. I love this time of year when the days are starting to get longer, the sun feels a bit warm yet there is still a month of winter left. Best of all, it's not a suffer fest every time you head out to shoot. This is from the other night along the shores of Lake Champlain in Vermont as the sun set over the southern Adirondacks. It was nice watching the light bathe the foreground ice formations as we waited for sunset without getting blasted with wind and subzero temps. I could actually leave my hand exposed to operate the camera without too much discomfort. Looking forward to spring...

Even Flow, Green Mountains, Vermont
The shack nasties are starting to set in big time here in the north country and I'm digging through the archives in search of spring inspiration. This type of scene, although not the big dramatic scene typified by the internet wonderboys, does get my juices flowing. This type of scene exemplifies the very nooks and crannies I love to explore around my home. The best part is it's fairly certain you won't run into another photographer, and if you do he or she will give you the same puzzled look you've got on your face. As if to say, "How the hell did you find this place?"

Sugar Coated, Northern Vermont
Well after a major January thaw 2 weeks ago and a week and a half of bitter cold, we're finally getting some more of the white stuff. Unfortunately we're supposed to get another few days of warm temps before things get back to winter. I realize this probably won't garner much attention online because of it's lack of dramatic light or otherworldly atmospherics but this is the very type of scene that made me fall in love with photography and the northeast.
I purposefully left this on the cool side to accentuate the blues just after sunset.

Oakledge Breakers, Lake Champlain, Vermont
Here's another from my Lake Champlain series, taken the other night.
The arctic high which is now sitting on top of us was just pushing into the area and the wind was gusting 40-50mph, creating a ton of spray which was extremely tough to keep off the lens/filter. After about 30 min. of working this scene I could here myself "crunching" every time I moved. I looked down to discover that I was coated in ice from all the wind driven spray. It wasn't terribly cold so it wasn't freezing on the lens instantly but over time and exposure to the wind it was freezing on me.

From one of the most vibrant and intense sunrises I've ever had the pleasure of photographing. I was so awestruck that at one point I realized I wasn't even shooting, just standing there dumbfounded. Once I snapped out of it I began the mad scramble to work as many comps as possible before the light faded. Foggy Morning, Peacham, Vermont
Haven't been around much lately, took some time off for Thanksgiving and have been fighting the creeping crud. Here's one from this past autumn as some low angle light added much needed warmth and depth to what looked like a wasted pre-dawn trip out to Peacham. I'm not a morning person, so when the light sucks all that crap about "being there," " the experience," blah, blah, blah is little consolation to my caffeine deprived, I'd rather be in bed, sorry arse. Brush Strokes, Lake Champlain, Vermont
There has been an uncharacteristically sunny stretch of weather here in the northeast. I say uncharacteristically because November is usually our cloudiest month. On this particularly evening last week there were very few clouds around at sunset and I thought for sure it would be a dud. But as the sun got further and further below the horizon some very high clouds began to catch the last rays of light. They weren't even noticeable until well after the sun had set. Love it when that happens!
As always thanks for taking a peek.

Moon Branches, Champlain Valley, Vermont
Happy Friday everyone! Here's one from last night as a gorgeous crescent moon set over the Champlain Valley. Nothing like the simplicity of silhouetted compositions, especially against a twilight sky. Hope everyone gets outdoors for some fun in the sun this weekend!
Be well and as always thanks for taking a peek.

Shaken, Not Stirred, Acadia National Park, Maine
Here's one from Acadia, still working through the autumn stuff, which is fine because there's no color anywhere outside right now. Looking forward to some white stuff to start falling.
