Scott Jarvie427,113*POST YOUR GOOGLE+ ALBUM OF PICTURES* It's been very very popular event in the past and I'm finally doing it again tonight. _This time it will be more organized, more heads up than usual and even a live event._ *SHARE AN ALBUM/GALLERY LINK* It's simple and easy but a lot of work and very fun for all. You simply share an album here and I'll be going through every single one of the albums. Then I will +1 the pictures in the album that I'm really drawn to. *BENEFIT* Well it's simply if you'd love to know which pictures I like most.  I always loved knowing which pictures people really love of mine because it helps me have an eye for which pictures are best received. It's a huge part of becoming a better photographer in my opinion. _*To be able to put out great art is first to know what great art looks like*_ *ON AIR* This will be something new... I'm going to go through all the albums Live, Online as an On-Air hangout. I'll talk a little bit about what I'm doing. If the show goes well I'll keep it for later viewing on YouTube... if the recording isn't great I won't. *SPECIAL GUEST* Because I want to have an outloud conversation about what and why I'm doing things  I will have my good friend and great photographer @109486822103622036238 on the show to facilitate the discussion. She will also visit a lot of these albums and +1 pictures as well. We ask that everyone add her to a circle ... not just because she's awesome (though that's reason enough) but so that if any of these albums are by mistake limited access she will have access. *DIRECTIONS* 1. Paste a link of a Google+ image gallery 2. Put a title or description of what we'll see in the album 3.  *IMPORTANT* If you post a link you hereby give us permission to use a screenshare view of all those pictures and perhaps your profile in a recorded Youtube video. 4. Make sure the album is Public access 5. Add @100962871525684315897  @109486822103622036238 to your circles 6. Return the favor. Take some of the other people's albums and +1 some of your favorites. *IMPORTANT* It bears repeating: _If you post a link you hereby give us permission to use a screenshare view of all those pictures and your profile (maybe) in a recorded Youtube video._ Do not post a link if you are not ok with lots of people visiting that link in addition to us and are not ok with it being on video as well.Share your Album- A Jarvie PlusOne Critique Experience2012-09-12 05:30:00143

Minimal Monday Wrap Up no 174

For the last few weeks I've been debating if I should continue with the theme or not. I've seen participation numbers decline for about a half a year now. I leave it up to you guys. I've attached a poll so please vote if this theme means anything to you.

This week I only got 5 entries. :(

In a previous version of this post I listed 4 entries but it came to my attention that I missed one entry. The tagging and hash tagging system doesn't seem to be foolproof and correctly tagged posts keep slipping through the gmail cracks.

Bubbles and Cracks

We all know Abraham Lake. It is one of the classics when it comes to winter photography in the Albertan Rocky Mountains. It is a beautiful place with a lot to offer for photography enthusiasts.

Those who know me know that I don't like photographing the obvious.
But sometimes photographing the obvious is an easy and quick fix to get the creative juices flowing.

I like doing this especially during the first few minutes of a session. Kind of a first shot. Like a golf practice swing. It limbers you up for the real thing.

For:
#WetWednesday (+***) curated by +Jen Baptist well it's water but it's frozen ;)

#WideAngleWednesday (+Wide Angle Wednesday) curated by +Asif Patel shot with a 90mm on 4x5 which is roughly 27mm in 35mm.

**NEWSFLASH**
Next week I am off the Vegas (42+ degrees C weather, YAY! NOT!) so there isn't going to be a wrap up next week. The wrap up for next week is going to coincide with the wrap up the week after.

Beautiful work this week by all 7 :( people adding work to the theme. Is it me or is G+ as good as dead?

Today is ‪#‎WorldOceansDay‬!

Here's a photo I made last year in Newfoundland on a very windy day. It was taken in Sally's Cove just outside of Gros Morne National Park and shows the Gulf of St Lawrence.

This page might seem a little slow these days (other than the updates on the darkroom build) but the truth is, this is the busiest time of the year for me.

I'm working on my logging project these days and that takes me out in the backcountry almost every weekend.

It's fun to drive these muddy logging roads. It's fun to discover new areas. It's not fun to see man's heavy hand on the landscape.

I live in such a beautiful area of Alberta. Too bad sometimes it feels like I'm the only one that really cares.

Here's a new photo of the series. This photo shows a block that was cut back in 2008. Regrowth is sparse. Very sparse.

This block also never got replanted. Sadly this is the reality of the area. Logging companies come in, cut all the trees and then do absolutely nothing but leave the areas behind as nothing more than... more »

This block also never got replanted. Sadly this is the reality of the area. Logging companies come in, cut all the trees and then do absolutely nothing but leave the areas behind as nothing more than barren landscapes. In theory they are mandated to submit a reforestation plan shortly after harvesting the trees though.

I guess the reforestation plan for this area got lost at AESRD.

This is an early submission for #MountainMonday curated by +Michael Russell

Minimal Monday Wrap Up no 176

It's been an anxious few days over here at home. As some of you might know, I was making plans to build a darkroom. It was one of my 2015 goals. And I've been making plans since right before the New Year. Yesterday (finally) the town of Cochrane issued the building permit and today is day 1 of the build. I can't wait until I get home!!!!
Anyway. SO yay me.

I'd like to especially thank +Jason Lowry of +STARK-Magazine, +benoit jansen-reynaud for the countless hours put into the competition and organizing everything and +Marc Koegel for sending me photos of my work as it is hanging in his gallery. Fine Art Long Exposure workshop in May 22 - May 24

Here's a photograph I made more as an experiment than as a real 'real' photo. It is similar to the 2.5h moon photograph I have in my portfolio (that will be on display tomorrow at the Vancouver PhotoHaus Gallery as part of the Stark Awards photo show).

This photograph shows a 1h exposure of... the SUN!

Like I said it was more an experiment than anything else. It only required about 16 stops of ND filters (10 stop + red filter which is 3 stops + polarizer which is 2.5 in my case) to achieve this on film (thank you reciprocity). And no my film didn't get burned. Although the emulsion is certainly reaching its ceiling of what the film can endure. Nonetheless it was a fun experiment to do.

If you want to learn more about long exposure photo techniques, I'm setting up a 3 day photo workshop with Marc Koegel on that subject matter at the end of May. Filters will be on hand. So if you always wanted to know more about this technique maybe this is a good opportunity for you to learn. We are planning on some classroom teaching but more importantly a lot of shooting (that's why we added a 3rd day) and a review of the work at the end of the workshop. We both find that that review is the best part of the weekend. We both absolutely LOVE it.

Here are the details on the event.
See you all there!

Newfoundland/Nova Scotia Day 19

Day 19 was the final day of our trip in Nova Scotia and concluded with driving from our friends place in Country Harbour to Halifax.
I had a few film holders left and decided to photograph whatever I came about on our trip back.

This is the West River in Sheet Harbour. A very classic view of the river taken from Marine Drive and the bridge across it.

Standing there was kind of scary. I had a couple feet to work with and behind me was traffic rushing along. Some people gave me a thumbs up after seeing the kind of camera I was using. I guess they where photo enthousiasts too. ;)

Here's the view from Google Maps. As you can see, not a lot of room to work with.

Newfoundland/Nova Scotia Day 18

On day 18 I woke up early again to catch some more golden sunrise light. I ended up at this beautiful abandoned home. Where once Dave and Betty Fraser lived. I don't know who these people where but that's what the sign in the yard said.

My friends said that Betty lived here until she died of old age. And that since then, the house was just left uncared for. I don't know how long ago that was but it had to be some time ago judging from the state the house was in.

I felt a bit weird photographing this though. Every time I walked closer their was something inside of me that said 'just a quick shot, don't walk around, just take the damn shot'. I was feeling some kind of presence as if I was disturbing something. Really weird.

Anyway when I was focusing on the ground glass the only thing I could think of was 'I sure hope that curtain doesn't move'. And 'can you imagine photographing a ghost!'. Sounds crazy I know but that's the mindset I was in.

Nonetheless, this photo is again one of my favourites from the trip. I really fell in love with the house. The shapes and forms of it. The little porch and fence. Everything about it screams authenticity to me. I was sad to hear that a month after I photographed it, the new landowners tore down the place.

Maybe the house allowed me one last farewell photograph.

Newfoundland/Nova Scotia Day 17

On day 17 we hung out with our friends and their family in the beautiful little town of Country Harbour, Nova Scotia. I tell you, once you leave the beaten path of touristic sights, the island has so much to offer!

The night before we were talking to our friends about places I could visit, when Ashley – the youngest of the family said – that she would show me around. I told her that hanging out with me was pretty boring and that it usually takes a bit of time for me to make a photograph. She was fine with that though.

I woke up early and caught a muted sunrise over Bill Cooks Cove in Stormont. Another one of those awesome little communities you have to visit. After breakfast I told my friends I was going to head out because I had some exploring to do with Ashley.

So we went on our way and we planned on visiting Black Brook Falls(al... more »

So we went on our way and we planned on visiting Black Brook Falls (also in the portfolio) when I saw this close to Cameron Lakes. I slammed on the brakes and told her 'did you see that? I need to go back and take a photo of that tree!'.

Setting up the camera was straightforward. I told Ashley to take a look under the darkcloth. All I heard where ooh's and aah's and she came from under there with eyes as big as plates.

It was then and there I knew I got her hooked on photography.

Burned Roots in Snow

A little abstract for your Saturday afternoon pleasure. wink emoticon
This photo was taken after I took 'Burned White Spruce' and shows the roots of the same tree.
I loved the graphic contrast of the blackened tree and the pristine white snow.

Happy April Fools day
Yesterdays post was indeed a joke. And maybe it was not the most obvious one at first, but no I didn't travel all the way to 'Fresno' to get 'the shot' of Tunnel View. I mean, c'mon. This post was part of a larger scheme, set up by no other than +Jim Goldst...

Tunnel View
A few weeks back I had to go to Fresno California for work. It was one of those dreaded last minute deals. Fly in early, fly out the day after. When I was looking at the map, I realized that Yosemite National Park was like a stone's throw away. Needless to ...

Newfoundland/Nova Scotia Day 16

I had to change the title here. :)
On day 16 we drove to the airport in St. Johns and hoped a plane to Halifax, Nova Scotia.

After getting the rental we drove straight to Peggys Cove. After photographing the lighthouse (it took me about an hour to get a shot without people!) we had a nice lunch in the restaurant there. After that we continued on our way to meet our friends in Country Harbour. About a 4 hour drive away.

Sarah had picked a beautiful secondary highway and we were enjoying the colourful albeit super bumpy ride when I looked to my right and bam, there was this photo. I slammed on the brakes and told Sarah that I saw something amazing. Put the Jeep in reverse and a little fist pump later, I grabbed my gear and walked down the shoulder.

This has to be the most beautiful fall scene I've ever seen. I was standing under a completely still canopy of fall colours next to a meander cutoff of nearby St. Mary's River. It was such a beautiful scene that I had to go back up and insist Sarah to come down with me. I'm glad I did.

One of my favourite scenes of the trip!
