This is of course the time of the year when frowny-faced naysayers tell you your resolutions are stupid and why are you waiting till today to make them and keep them, as if your today must conform to their today, as if your decision to evolve or change or Do Something is somehow offensive to them. It's the same cynical thing you hear at Valentine's Day -- "I don't need a day to buy flowers for my wife," they say, which is true, but of course they probably don't buy flowers for their wives on any other day anyway. People are resistant to the idea that we should change, that we can better ourselves, whether it's on the first day of the year or the third or the 51st or the 345th. They will tell you your resolutions are stupid, but of course they'll continue on making no changes for themselves and wearing their cynicism like an ugly hat proudly displayed. Yes, of course,... more »

DARPA unveiled it's latest military gadget, a robotic dog that can carry over 400 pounds 20 miles.

Now smart enough to follow the squad lead, doesn't need to be remote controlled to follow paths and work in tandem with his robotic brothers. can walk up to 3 miles per hour over rocky terrain and transition to a 5-mile-per-hour jog on a flat surface. Eventually, top speed will be around 7 miles per hour on flat surfaces.

“We want a radio operator to be able to tell it to sit, stay. Likewise, the robot could tell them, I’m stuck, wait.”

Each member of the pack is also 10 times quieter than its predecessor robot, which should make it easier to hold a conversation or sneak up on an enemy.

9/11 for me created in me a sense of fear and anxiety. F'rex: I was afraid of flying for years after. Okay before and now. But then: afraid.

Thing is, that's of course the aim of terrorism. But what nobody really tells you is that it's also the aim, in part, of the government.

This became clear recently when flying out of PHL airport, where before security they play a video that literally evokes the events of 9/11. Because, hey, if there's one thing that'll get me to submit to a violation of my human rights by the TSA, it's trying to drum up that fear.

9/11 taught me a lot about fear. And over time, it taught me that we have to find a way to operate without it.

Because fear trumps wisdom, logic, science, common sense, love, all the good stuff. Fear will fuck you up, stop you from taking chances.

I mean, listen, fear is fine if... more »

"In Blackbirds, Miriam’s strange ability to see people’s deaths was mostly presented as-is, but in the new novel Chuck Wendig starts to reveal some of its underpinnings and even ties these into the novel’s central mystery, making it an even more tense and gripping story. I realize that’s vague, but I simply don’t want to give away any plot details here because Mockingbird, a shocking, twisting beast of a book that’ll have you on edge throughout, is best experienced with as little foreknowledge as possible."

Instead the tumblr posts go back to AmberUnmasked where all the great show notes are anyway. That's where I want people directed so it made no sense to embed the audio in yet another place.
