+WIRED goes inside the "Cycleplex" in an article about Google's bike programs and the philosophy behind them. From 700 bikes strewn around campus to help people get between buildings faster (each traveling an estimated 1,000 miles per year), to the 42-mile, 65-turn "Bayway" that employees on two wheels take from San Francisco to Mountain View, it turns out we're pretty into our bikes.

Your next smartphone might use sapphire glass instead of Gorilla Glass
Sapphire, the hardest natural substance after diamond, might soon be used to make smartphone screens. Sheets of sapphire glass are already used by the military to create transparent armor, but if a bunch of sapphire-synthesizing startups have their way, sapphire glass will soon be cheap enough for use in a wide range of consumer products, such as smartphones, tablets, and other ruggedized devices.

The world’s first 3D printing pen: Yours for just $75
Come September, if everything goes to plan, the world’s first 3D printing pen will go on sale for $75. The pen, called the 3Doodler, essentially allows you to lift your flat sketches off the paper — or, if you wish, to actually draw in three dimensions.

+WIRED: Inside Google Spanner, the Largest Single DB on Earth
#google #insidegoogle
"Much like the engineering team that created it, Spanner is something that stretches across the globe while behaving as if it’s all in one place. Unveiled this fall after years of hints and rumors, it’s the first worldwide database worthy of the name — a database designed to seamlessly operate across hundreds of data centers and millions of machines and trillions of rows of information.
Spanner is a creation so large, some have trouble wrapping their heads around it..."

While researching the problems with the patent system I came across an amazing case of an amateur inventor whose dining room table discussion in the early 80s led to patents that supposedly made nearly every e-commerce site an infringer. But one defendant fought back...
I won't spoil the ending--read for yourself!
And do you folks agree with me that the system might be bottoming out, and the very outrage about the patent problem is leading to solutions?
