APPEX IS HIRING! The Bing Application Experiences team was formed specifically to build Windows 8 applications, powered by Bing. We are a startup within Microsoft with an aggressive timeline. The Weather, Sports, News, Travel and Finance apps you see in the Windows 8 release were all built by us.

I am looking for talented UX designers to join our team in Bellevue, Washington! Please send me a message if you are interested in helping us build beautiful, content-rich applications for the biggest product release in Microsoft history!

Windows 8 Consumer Preview is live this morning! Check it out and tell me what you think about the Bing powered apps!

"The apps for Maps and Weather, both of which are powered by Bing, are simply beautiful. They work well, and of course you can pin your Weather tile to the start screen so that you get live weather updates.

Other apps include Finance, Xbox Games, a Camera app, Video, Messaging, and a Remote Desktop—a Metro style way to browse another system."

Out with the Old, and In with the New: A Conversation with Don Norman & Jon Kolko. I haven't yet watched the video of the entire talk, but blogger, Richard Anderson, has pulled out some great quotes on design and business, including this one about Google:

"Google doesn't understand people -- doesn't understand consumer products; they're all about technologies... They believe in algorithms. They don't care about people. Larry and Serge are brilliant technologists, and they believe they can solve everything with an algorithm... They don't believe in designers -- they believe in testing: we'll see what people like best. What that does is give you design by committee. What is Google's product? The product is not search; the product is not advertising. The product is you. ... They are selling you to their advertisers. Their customers are the advertisers, and... more »

Last weekend, the Oregon Ducks beat the UW Huskies (my Alma Mater), and as much as I hate the Ducks, I was reminded of their amazing investment in design. I would probably be a lot more interested in watching sports if every team had as much attention to detail with their uniforms, accessories, and environmental design as Oregon does! Here's what Todd Van Horn, Nike's top football uniform designer, has to say about it.

Even though it has been out for a year now, I just purchased Kinect and my very first xbox - my first video game system since my Super Nintendo! I've been having a lot of fun playing Dance Central, but seeing this video made me realize that there is a lot more that can be done with the Kinect technology besides just playing games. Check out this inspiring video about how Microsoft's Kinect technology is changing the world - and how the users are the ones who are making it happen.

This forward-thinking vision video from Microsoft Office Labs went viral yesterday, and I'm hearing a lot of mixed opinions about it. Some critics think the video - with its magically clean, luxurious setting - is too far from realistic. John Pavlus argues that corporate future vision videos should feel more authentic (less "Minority Report") and that because "the interfaces of a decade from now are going to be part of a world that looks a lot like the one we live in now" the videos should reflect that.

I would argue that the pristine, clutter-free environment actually helps one to focus on the main subject matter of the video - a beautifully designed, fluid, connected productivity system. When I first watched this video I didn't even notice the environment so much as the beautifully executed metro design of the connected interfaces. If the environment was more... more »

Design + Science: "I wonder how much might be gained if designers had a deeper understanding of the science behind synthetic biology and genomics? Or nanotechnology? Or robotics? Could designers help scientists better see the implications and opportunities of the technologies they are creating? Might better educated and aware designers be in a position to challenge the assumptions of the science or reinterpret them in innovative ways? Might they do a better job of fitting the new science into our lives so that we can gain more benefit?"

I'm just starting to really play around with Siri - I just told her I want to get drunk, and she gave me cab dispatchers I could call. I appreciate how smart Siri is and how the technology doesn't just answer your questions, but is smart about the context.

I'm guessing there are infinite crazy things you can ask Siri - anyone have any favorite Siri answers? This site has some good ones.

Design is often informed by research, but conversely research is not often informed by design. This experiment has shown that design can enhance research, and that the relationship between the two could be even more powerful if both were informing each other.

In this article by Frog's Robert Fabricant, he speaks of interning at Microsoft in 1996 and receiving a puzzled look from Bill Gates when he introduced himself as a designer and not a software engineer. Since then, Microsoft and other large tech companies have embraced design, but I see Microsoft struggling to catch up every day (Fabricant's analysis of Windows Phone illustrates this). As UX designers at Microsoft, we try to evangelize and promote the importance of design in everything we do, but it is still often an afterthought and not part of early brainstorms and concept creation.

Designers need to be at the forefront of any project - not just waiting in the wings to come in and help improve an innovation. According to Fabricant, "We [designers] must be active participants at [the inception of an idea]. If designers are truly skilled at identifying unmet human needs and creating... more »
