New Follower Chart on CircleCount
better customizable, more options, more insights
Today we are launching our new follower chart on CircleCount.
As you can see in the animation below you have a lot of options:
► show the absolute follower numbers per day
► show the follower growth per day
► show the last 7 days
► show the last 30 days
► show the last 6 months
► show the last 1 year
► show all
► show your custom selection
The options can be saved individually
That means that if you like to see always the follower growth in the last 7 days, you can save this as your default and will get to see on any profile exactly this chart (when you are logged in on CircleCount).

A counter-intuitive manifestation of a zero-one law: according to computer models. everyone who was alive in 1000BCE is either an ancestor of everyone alive today, or else an ancestor of nobody alive today (including people in extremely remote and isolated communities).
This seems unbelievable until you realise that with each generation, anyone who is a descendant of the original person will propagate that property to slightly more than two people in the next generation on average. This birth-death process either extinguishes early on, or else ignites and grows exponentially until it covers most of the world's population after a couple dozen generations; and then all the isolated holdouts eventually get "infected" through one or two migrants. Geographical or cultural barriers can create bottlenecks for a few generations, but they don't last long (e... more »

On April 17, a paper arrived in the inbox of the Annals of Mathematics. Written by a mathematician virtually unknown to the experts in his field — a 50-something lecturer at the University of New Hampshire named Yitang Zhang — the paper claimed to have taken a huge step forward in understanding one of mathematics’ oldest problems, the twin primes conjecture. And it had! Rumors swept through the mathematics community that a great advance had been made by a researcher no one seemed to know — someone whose talents had been so overlooked after he earned his doctorate in 1992 that he had found it difficult to get an academic job, working for several years as an accountant and even in a Subway sandwich shop.

Watch, learn and discuss! It's short, but it provides great insights and plenty of room for discussion! And we even added some cool sound this time.
This animation shows the CFD simulation of a car facing wind from the left. The car itself is basically stationary (no forward movement), but spinning around its center. This study was part of a safety check when regulations changed to ensure that the car wouldn't lift from the ground even when out of control.

How wearable computing will change everything (even for those not wearing computing!)
Listen, you tech-savvy, trend-resisting cynic you. I want you to stop dismissing wearable computing as a pointless, narcissistic fad.
Wearable computing is not for people too lazy to look at their phones. It’s not a trendy toy for wealthy yuppies. And it’s not about joining +Robert Scoble in the shower.
What you need to know is this: Wearable computing is the next evolution of consumer electronics. And it changes everything for everyone and not just the people actually wearing the computing. (It will even change Apple!)
Here's why:

Roses are Red, Blood Cells Blue
❤ The heart is a symbol of love, and on this Mother's Day, let's consider the cardiovascular changes in a pregnant mother. As the sole provider of nourishment to the baby, the mother's cardiac output (blood volume) increases by 50% during pregnancy...that's an extra liter and half. Her heart will enlarge and beat faster, by about 15 beats/min. The growing fetus pushes her heart upwards and to the left. She will need more red blood cells to carry extra oxygen, although the increased numbers do not keep up with the blood volume. The higher requirement for iron and the dilution of red cells in blood can make mama-to-be tired and anemic.
❤ A pregnant woman is hypercoagulable: more likely to form clots. This is thought to be an evolutionary precaution against hemorrhaging after delivery, but it puts the mother at ... more »

Check out Anselm Levskaya's program called polyHédronisme, which lets you draw strange and beautiful polyhedra on your web browser!
http://levskaya.github.io/polyhedronisme/
You start with a Platonic solid and then do things to it. I got this one by typing "aaaaD", which starts with a dodecahedron and then does "ambo" 4 times. If you want to figure out what "ambo" means, try "D", then "aD", then "aaD".
Thanks to +William Rutiser for pointing this out!

Smart headlights see through rain, snow. Turn your headlights into projectors, then use a camera pair and fast computer to calculate where the raindrops are going to be and turn off those pixels on the projectors, and voilà, you can see through the rain like it's not there.
