Choking Hazard - San Francisco, CA
This is the next image in my year-long abc photo project. I'm posting a new image that I've created every couple of weeks based on a letter of the alphabet. Click through to see the other images.
When my oldest daughter was learning how to eat, we were very careful to make sure that her food was cut up in bite-sized pieces. We avoided all the common choking hazards like popcorn, nuts, raw fruits, raw veggies, and hot dogs. As she got older, we made sure to watch her carefully as we gave her these foods but still were careful to do things like skin and half the grapes. Do you know how much a pain in the butt it is to skin and half a bunch of grapes? And you don't even get to eat them yourself!
As much as this photo is about grapes, it's also a story about the second child. There are so many things we are more relaxed ... more »

The Amazing Zihni and Liv
This image is another in my Unlit series - portraits taken backstage at the Union Square Fire Dancing Expo in April. Click through to see the other ones I've processed so far. Erol was one of the first fire performers I met when I first started shooting at the local fire spinning jams back in December. He was always super friendly and we even made a pretty cool shot together under a dome. https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/102989419872729255436/albums/5808856265325202321/5834454316929611170 Liv is pretty amazing herself! She's a photographer that shot some of the backstage with me at the expo. I've only met these performers pretty recently but I feel like I've known them for much longer! More to come!

Tori
This image is the next in my Unlit series - portraits taken backstage at the Union Square Fire Dancing Expo. Click through to see the others so far. I loved meeting so many interesting people and being able to photograph them before they went on stage. Tori was very sweet and told me she lives in Minnesota. She wondered if she should take her hood off or keep it on for her portrait. 30 minutes later she went on stage and just rocked it with an amazing solo spinning fire in front of 3000 people. So inspiring! More to come!

My Fickle Friend - San Francisco, CA
This is the next image in my year-long abc photo project. I'm posting a new image that I've created every couple of weeks based on a letter of the alphabet. Click through to see the other images.
I grew up in San Francisco and I love the fog. It's one of those things that make San Francisco so special. Nothing feels more like coming home than driving into the city after I've been away for a while and seeing that layer of white and smelling that moist air. Some people refer to it as a fog monster. I prefer to think of it as that awkward friend that sneaks up silently behind you and stands there for way too long before you notice them and then you turn around and you're wearing shorts and a t-shirt in 50 degree weather. The fog drifts in silently and envelops the city in a blanket of white. Dress in layers, bring a jacket. ... more »

GlitterGirl
This is the first in my series of images taken backstage at the Fire Dancing Expo last Saturday. I've been shooting fire dancers for a couple months and I asked to shoot backstage at the annual expo held at Union Square. There were 39 acts with 97 performers. I didn't shoot them all but I was fortunate enough to make some cool images with the people that stopped by. I set up a single softbox and a backdrop made from black foamcore to try and get some cool interesting shots. +Brian Bach Sørensen assisted with lighting and holding things upright in the slightly windy conditions.
Performers weren't allowed to light up until they were on stage so I'm calling this series of images Unlit. Kind of a play on words with the fire performers and the light I used to capture them.
This is Isa GlitterGirl founder and co-producer of this outstanding s... more »

There is a free fire show this weekend. There will be many choreographed numbers set to music and very different from the monthly fire jams. It should be pretty cool! I'm excited to have been invited to take portraits of the performers backstage before the show. No fire back there but it should be fun anyway!
This Saturday at Union Square 8pm in San Francisco.

Smells Just The Same - San Francisco, CA
This is another image my daughter wanted to create based on an album cover. I guess this is an ongoing project since this is the 3rd one so far. Click through to see the others. These photos are a fun challenge for us. She likes to choose photos that have an interesting pose and I have to work on the lighting and setup. She figures out what props we might need and I deconstruct how a photo was made. Adding to the challenge is the fact that when working with kids (especially your own) you have a very limited window before their attention goes elsewhere. They don't want to wait for you to fiddle with camera settings or adjust lights. You pretty much have to nail the shot the first time before all the props and setups go flying and they start making silly faces. This shot is ok I think. I cropped a bit tighter than the original. I think I need a ... more »

My old college roommate. I lived with Chris in 1998 in Santa Barbara while we were both grad students studying conducting. I wasn't always the best colleague or roommate. I was young, insecure, and thought I knew everything about everything. It took many years for me to realize how little I actually knew, but through that self reflection I came to understand what a big influence he was on who I am now and my relationships with other people. If you know him you'll know that he is so generous and giving both in time and energy. He teaches music at a high school in LA and I know his students are lucky to have him. He was visiting SF for a music festival here with 150 of his students and I jumped at the chance to catch up with him. We met for dinner at Pier 39 while his students wandered around. We talked about our work and our families before I asked to make a portrait on the pier. For this shot, I set... more »

Happy Anniversary to my wonderful wife! We met on the first day of graduate school orientation in the music department at UCSB back in 1999. Within minutes we had fallen in love and have been together since. We married on April 15, 2006. This is one of the earliest digital pictures I have of us together. Taken with a Canon Powershot A85 back in 2004. She's usually shy around the camera but I think the $1.50 margaritas may have helped.
