For "African Tuesdays" theme of "African ways" I have dug in the archives and come up with a snapshot taken from a driving and rather rattling vehicle on the road back to Twee Rivieren in the Kgalagadi. I think we were late for the gate closing time and I still regret not having been able to take this photo under more favourable conditions as the sunset that day was absolutely spectacular. For

This is one of my Northwest Florida favorites.  I shot this Gulf scene with a 17-40mm wide angle lens at 17mm.  I then switched lenses to shoot the moon with my 70-200 so that it would show up larger.  At 17mm the moon was only be a dot in the sky.  I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

From +David Drummond, Chief Legal Officer: We cannot say this more clearly—the government does not have access to Google servers—not directly, or via a back door, or a so-called drop box. Nor have we received blanket orders of the kind being discussed in the media. It is quite wrong to insinuate otherwise. We provide user data to governments only in accordance with the law. Our legal team reviews each and every request, and frequently pushes back when requests are overly broad or don’t follow the correct process. And we have taken the lead in being as transparent as possible about government requests for user information.

Jan van Cappelle’s career as a maker began when he read a novel by fellow Dutchman Leonard de Vries called “The Boys of the Hobby Club.” Written under Nazi occupation and published in 1947, it’s essentially the story of a group of boys creating a makerspace before such a word existed. http://bit.ly/1bdkxE9

Talk about a fashion cost

I was giving a speech to a bunch of startup entrepreneurs on Monday at a +Rackspace event when this guy showed me a set of sensors he was wearing. Costs $35. He was wearing them on his head, he told me the sensors are watching his brainwaves and can also sense his heartrate and such.

It's always the weird ones that change the world.

So many times in my life I've seen people who are "weird" and are "willing to put up with the fashion cost" come up with things that turn out to be world changing.

If you are this guy, sorry I forgot your name. Please tell me more about the sensors in comments below.

Some things about fashion cost.

I talked with the inventor of the mouse, Douglas Engelbart. He was kicked out of his own research lab because his own coworkers thought his ideaswere... more »

The TapeTricity Card, from MAKE pal Chris Connors, is a great first electronics project for kids. It’s quick, cheap, easy, and fun to make. Not only does it teach how to make a simple circuit, but it engages the maker’s creativity: they design and draw the card, and then they decide how many and which color LEDs to include. http://bit.ly/17ZcePP

Type lovers know that all web fonts are not created equal. But more interestingly, being available on the web doesn’t necessarily mean they were made for the web, does it?

That’s right. Many of the typefaces currently available as web fonts were designed long before computers and electronic displays. Some were developed for an old printing process called letterpress, where type was pressed into paper and there was a slight ‘squeeze’ of ink. These typefaces (particularly those designed for book printing) look quite light in modern printing because of the lack of ink squeeze. When these typefaces are used on the web, their blocks of text can look pallid, spindly and hard to read. Details such as thin hairlines or serifs can become very faint and hinder readability. Since type is meant to be read, this difference matters a great deal.

A new definition for pain: #Ubuntu

Live session booted with the now familiar HDMI oops thingie, a thorough disappointment. After that, a simple, stock installation, making #Ringtail join the eight-boot setup for this test machine. GRUB2 remains in control by Pangolin on the same disk.

Boot again, crash. Lovely. At this point, I already have over 9,000 expletives waiting, but since I have wasted them all in the previous round of testing, you get none for the time being.
