Jumping through hoops
In Olympic year, a new event from Microsoft

In which I…
Go to brush up on Outlook email templating (haven't done it for a while).
Find useful looking demo on microsoft.com.
Realise demo requires Windows MediaPlayer.
Update Flip4Mac and Silverlight for the first time in ages.
Find it makes no difference.
Go and find a Windows machine or boot up Virtual Machine.
Sigh /

Srsly, Microsoft, do you really suppose that all designers work on Windows?
And do you really think MediaPlayer is the friendliest way to deliver video in 2012?
Yes I know I'll need to test the solution on Windows eventually but I just wanted to learn :(

Why Google+ is Kicking Facebook’s Ass

by +Sharon Hurley Hall

Facebook, Shmacebook! If you’re still on the fence about Google+, it’s time to get off and get your account. Google+ users have known for months that this was a better social network for businesses than Facebook, but if you need convincing here’s why Google+ rules and why you need to get a Google+ profile fast.

Google+ ‘Best of’ search parameter feature request
In light of the shared post (and its comments), I'd like to have a way to force the Best of view in a search query stream:

So instead of… https://plus.google.com/s/103363186582409589918%20%23hashtags

…and then having to manually select Best of, I could do something like this:
https://plus.google.com/s/103363186582409589918%20%23hashtags&view=bestof

…or:

Are G+ID based searches too flaky to rely on any more?
I don't normally reshare my own stuff -- dodgy! -- but bear with me in this case.

A few days ago I posted my discovery below but, as of this morning, it seems to be highly erratic. It works superbly sometimes and then not at all at others. (It wasn't flawless but more reliable before.)

-- Does it work for you?
-- Has Google changed something?
-- What factors dictate when it will and won't work?

I'd like answers because this search technique is a really useful function. It would be great if someone from Google could comment. If any of you reading this have the ear of someone at Google perhaps you can help bring it to their attention. Thanks.

Disestablish bigotry
+Ben Goldacre summed up my thinking on this debacle with his tweet…
"Srsly tho, why is being homophobic so important to Christians and the politicians who support them?" twitter.com/bengoldacre/status/170982311066746880

Issues like this are why there shouldn't be any faith schools in the state system. When it comes to prejudice promoted by a creed, people are going to believe what they believe. But you can't have the state sponsor such teaching.

If it's not already clear what I think about homophobia, you can follow my train of thinking here: plus.google.com/103363186582409589918/posts/89L8got4f9m.

iPads are helping Apple in the enterprise market
The pros and cons as seen by an IT manager on page 2 of this article are interesting…

"In general I find iOS devices very easy to support. They rarely break down and when they do they can fairly easily be reset or reconfigured with a few instructions over the telephone. In more serious cases I have sometimes had to direct the user to a local Apple store where they go to the Genius Bar just like any other user. But in three years of using iPhones this has only happened twice and geographically this was the best decision (one in Northern Ireland and one in Fyfe).

"The lack of remote support tools such as WebEx, Team Viewer or Logmein is disappointing. I can manage setup and roll out profiles but can’t see what is happening as I can with Windows Mobile and Android devices. Given the low failure rate this hasn’tyet b... more »

Fifteen minutes to improve your head shot photo: Jaws revisited!
I rarely watch instructional videos as they are time consuming, but Peter Hurley here does a great job. If you´re impatient go the 9th minute to see the results

Such a simple trick and such a huge improvement! No expensive equipment or post-processing needed to enormously improve your head shot. Next time you need one for your CV have your photographer watch this first!
Like Peter says ´it may feel weird, but if it looks great who cares´

I have changed my profile photo for today to my formal one to show some difference

check out this photo by +francisco tejon https://plus.google.com/u/0/109753187393405195231/posts/36fkmCCZCuN to see a shot where the technique almost certainly has been applied.

I want a condensed guide making the case for using G+ for Business to Business, both generally, and how it wins over Facebook specifically.

In support of the G+ hashtag for topic discovery
I'm trying to form a new habit of consistent use of #hashtags . Here's why…

In terms of increasing one's discoverability by others, I reckon Google+ search works well enough the vast majority of the time without resorting to hashtags, if one just has the right text content in the post to start with.

But where they really add juice is in providing a kind of 'browse' route for easy discovery of your own posts around particular topics. And that can then help people understand what makes you tick by pointing them at G+ID + topic search streams. Here's an example:

plus.google.com/s/103363186582409589918%20%23hashtags
That collection of hashtag related posts includes my own and also ones by others that I've commented on.

Lessons in corporate morality -- or the lack of it
By chance I caught this amazing programme last night. It was the last of 4 (I think) and I now want to seek out the previous 3. If you can view BBC iPlayer, I recommend you watch it.

This episode focused on using consumer clout to put pressure on and to boycott big brands who were heavily invested in the South African apartheid regime. It was a process of around 2 painful decades to try and get big corporates (and their political lackeys) to wake up to their moral accountability.

The programme is skilfully edited to let the story speak for itself. It's not hard to see where the moral high ground lies when rich, white businessmen from around the world -- some smirking, others still bristling with indignation at having their business disrupted -- are intercut with people dropping like hunted prey at the wrong end of a... more »

The future is clearly gesture
"Clear may not be the right todo list app for you, but it is definitely blazing the trail for a new class of apps that will be completely based on gestures. This would have been completely impossible just a few years ago, as none of us were familiar with pinch-and-zoom gestures yet. But as Tim Cook pointed out earlier today, all of this has now become completely intuitive and the next logical step now is to just do away with more and more of what is still left of the desktop metaphors on our mobile devices."

Intriguing stuff from +John Blossom…

"This is the story of The Second Web, where the Web no longer is just a technology that works for billions of people around the world but now works in many ways like the world in which we live. With the latest advances in technologies deployed via the Web, the Web surrounds us every moment of our lives; the world is becoming the Web in which we live. It's a world in which people, organizations and sensors using the Web are creating a real-time stream of trillions of outputs and inputs that have transformed the world itself into a publishing organism which surrounds us with information and experiences."

Just over a month ago +Julian Bond posted one of his occasional grumbles about Google+ not having RSS feeds for our accounts 'baked in'. And we agree with him.

So +Jonathan Schofield created our Page as an experiment in using Google+ as a campaigning tool to reach out to Google.

Thank you to all 70 who have since reshared our proposition (goo.gl/NbCd1) and all 300 or so who have +1'ed us or added us to their circles. But collectively that puts us at only ~0.000003% of the gplus population.

That's not enough to get our message addressed by Google, people! If we really want RSS to be an integral part of G+, a lot more people are going to have to join us and we're going to have to be more vocal... more »

Notifications for resharing a reshare
Last week I posted about how I wish Google would let us reshare a commentary on a reshare (as opposed to just resharing the original reshare) [1].

I haven't seen any movement on that but I have just noticed that we now at least get a notification if someone reshares a post from our reshare. See the screenshot below.

Is this new? Or has it always been there and I just need to be more observant?
