"Until recently people believed much of the rain forest's carbon floated down the Amazon River and ended up deep in the ocean. University of Washington research showed a decade ago that rivers exhale huge amounts of carbon dioxide – though left open the question of how that was possible, since bark and stems were thought to be too tough for river bacteria to digest.
A study published this week in Nature Geoscience resolves the conundrum, proving that woody plant matter is almost completely digested by bacteria living in the Amazon River, and that this tough stuff plays a major part in fueling the river's breath.
The finding has implications for global carbon models, and for the ecology of the Amazon and the world's other rivers".

Jumping White Shark

This great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) struck directly from below with such force that it leapt entirely clear of the water.

Gansbaai, South Africa, where this image was taken, is one of the only places in the world where the sharks exhibit this behaviour.

Conditions for high speed photography were difficult as the light was low, but the setting sun imparted a beautiful golden glow to the shark's body, accentuating the size of its enormous pectoral fin.

Want to Know How to Share a Feature Image in an Album in the New Google+?

I am hoping that this will help some to see how the new album functionality can be used to share the image you want, which is in an album. This instructional series of images assumes that the images are already in the album. If they are not, upload the image(s) and DO NOT share at that point. From there, follow the directions given in this set of images. I hope it helps.

The instructions are in the Image titles, but will also be in the first comment for each one, as if you are on mobile you will not be able to read the image titles, I don't think.

Deported because of pro-independence opinions?

Yesterday Noureddine Ziani, a Moroccan citizen who has been living for many years in Catalonia, was deported to Tanger with no trial.

The CNI (Spanish intelligence - sic) says he is a spy for Morocco and promotes Salafism. Of course, they have showed no evidence and it has all been an administrative affair, no trial, no possible defense.

Funny enough, Morocco is fighting Salafists. So, he should have to be some sort of triple spy, working for Morocco, Salafists, and Catalans...

Ah, yes, Catalans. Because after living here so many years he is just one more Catalan, just Muslim and born in Morocco. He has worked for years promoting the integration of Muslims and North-African immigrants into Catalan society. He has mediated between town councils and imams, specially the more radical ones. Highly symmetric tilings

You can't tile the plane with octagons, but you can tile the plane with tiles having octagonal symmetry... so long as you don't mind the tiles being snowflake-like fractals! More specifically, the red shape in the main picture is a fractal with octagonal symmetry, and it is possible to tile the plane with infinitely many identical copies of this shape, as shown in the second picture.

This fractal is constructed as the limit of a sequence of simpler shapes, each of which is built out of polygons. The pictures labelled Figure 1, Figure 2 and Figure 3 show the first three approximations to the octagonal fractal. The details of the construction are given in the recent paper http://arxiv.org/abs/1305.1798 by Dirk Frettlöh. The example just given is one of a large family of examples of tilings that have twice as much symmetry as one would expect.more »

Paweł Althamer

Paweł Althamer (born 1967) is a contemporary Polish sculptor, collaborative artist, and creator of installations and video art. In 2000, Althamer participated in Manifesta 3 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. He won the Vincent Award in 2004. In 2007, he presented the exhibition One of many with the Nicola Trussardi Foundation.
His longest-running collaboration is with the Nowolipie Group, an organisation in Warsaw for adults with mental or physical disabilities, to whom he has been teaching a Friday night ceramics class since the early 1990s. In 2008 Althamer arranged for the group to wear matching overalls and take a trip on a biplane, which became the subject of a short film by Althamer’s frequent collaborator, Artur Żmijewski (Winged, 2008).

The new G+: Why Roboto sucks and good Font Rendering is important for a good Reading Experience

Most People are not as familiar with the Rules of Typography, but also the Technologies behind so called Font Rendering - so I'll explain.

Your Computer has a mathematical Description of how a Font looks like. So when it displays for Example my Name "Dieter Mueller" it looks up the Description of each Letter and "paints" them on your Screen. This is called Rendering.

Since the Resolution of Computer Screens is rather limited Type in small Size often renders badly: Letters get smudged, squashed, blurry and simply unreadable.

What is also at play here is the inability of people, when learning about a different culture or race, to distinguish between the aberrations of a tiny minority within that group, and the normal behaviour of a significant section. Some examples are small in number but can be the tip of a much wider problem: eg, knife crime, which is literally the sharp end of a host of problems affecting black communities ranging from family breakdown, to poverty, to low school achievement and social exclusion.

Ultimately, the urge to vilify groups of whom we know little may be very human, and helps us bond with those we feel are "like us". But if we are going to deal with the world as it is, and not as a cosy fantasyland where our group is racially and culturally supreme, we have to recognise when sweeping statements are false.
