"Eta Aquarids"

2013 Eta Aquarids meteor shower. The radiant for this meteor shower was rising in the north east in the early hours but after observing all the sections of sky the longer and brighter meteors seemed to be predominately in the opposite direction, but if you traced their paths back through the sky most were coming from the radiant point. The meteors that I observed near the radiant were all very short lived and faint.
I had my camera shooting continuous frames. This picture is compiled from one base frame for the landscape, sky and the meteor to the left of the tree. I then went through the other frames with this composition and selected the ones with meteors and masked them on top of the base image. Thin, high level cloud has bloated some of the stars and made them appear much larger and brighter than normal (particularly the star on the left).

"Road To The Milky Way"

International Dark Sky Week: April 5-11

I could not let International Dark Sky Week pass without getting out at least once with the camera to show my dark skies. I have had a lot of cloud and smoke from forestry fuel reduction burn offs lately, but things finally cleared up a bit this morning. With the central bulge of the Milky Way directly overhead just before dawn, I thought that it was time to do another vertical panorama.

Vertical panorama made from 10 horizontal images. The Zodiacal Light streams towards the central bulge of the Milky Way and the first light of the approaching dawn appears on the horizon.

Apart from a few little timelapse sequences which I will probably release as part of a much larger timelapse project later in the year, this will be my last upload from this spectacular aurora display about three weeks ago. Bring on the next one.

Less than a third of the worldwide population and 1% of the continental USA population lives under truly, unpolluted from light, starry skies. Do you?

"Lookout"

Another one from Sunday night.

Aurora Australis, Mount Buffalo National Park, Australia. 17th of March 2013

This is the lookout below "The Horn" in the Mount Buffalo National Park. Over 180 degree panorama made from 8 portrait style images. The landscape is being lit by the light of the crescent moon which is the bright spot on the right of this image. Another one of my cameras is in the hut doing a timelapse (coming soon).

"Aurora In The Alps"

Aurora Australis. Mount Buffalo National Park, Australia. 17th of March 2013

With predictions of a fairly strong geomagnetic storm due to strike the Earth, I packed up my camera gear and headed to one of my favorite locations. Without mobile reception up there I had no idea what the aurora numbers were doing so all I could do was get setup and wait until it got dark.

This is the first time I have been able to see an aurora with my own eyes. Watching the rays and arcs flow across the sky was amazing. I have hundreds and hundreds of images from this wonderful night to go through. A crescent moon off to the right of frame helped light up the landscape during this single exposure.

"Above The Clouds"

Mt McKay, Alpine National Park, Australia.

At 1842m, Mt McKay is the highest drivable peak in Australia. I had originally planned to go to a different location and do an all night timelapse, but when I arrived, that location was completely clouded out despite a forecast of clear skies. Plan B was to head even higher to see if we could get above the clouds, and we were briefly rewarded with this view before the clouds came back.

Thin crescent moon on the horizon. Jupiter is the bright spot in the top right hand corner of the frame and the Pleiades star cluster is below and to the left of Jupiter.

"Double Act"

Two comets, Comet Panstarrs (C/2011 L4) and Comet Lemmon (C/2012 F6), are currently gracing the early evening sky. Panstarrs to the right of the tree was just visible to the unaided eye but sets below the horizon not long after emerging from the twilight. Comet Lemmon (upper left of frame with a slightly green nucleus) is not as bright but can be easily seen with binoculars or small telescopes.

1st of March, 2013
The clouds and moon finally cooperated to allow me to get my first images of Comet Panstarrs this evening. Going to have some fun with this comet over the coming weeks. It probably will not brighten as much as earlier predictions but it is still a nice sight.

"Fly Me To The Moons"

Hi all,

No matter how much you plan and prepare, sometimes you just have to be very lucky.

I had my camera imaging The Moon and Jupiter occultation through my telescope at about 10 second intervals when I noticed the lights from a plane close to the moon. I realised that there was a chance that it would pass in front of the moon, so I quickly canceled the remote timer I was using to take the shots and instead started shooting high speed continuous frames. I managed to get this plane crossing the moon in five individual frames just as Jupiter was about to be occulted by The Moon.

This is a two image composite. The Moon, Jupiter and the plane are all one single image. I then took an overexposed image to bring up the Galilean Moons of (from left to right) Io, Callisto and Europa. Ganymede had already been occulted by The Moon.

It's back! Here in Australia I am lucky enough to be able to photograph this section of the sky for about ten months each year. Some of you might recognise this as the same location as my "Aurora Australis" "Midnight Rainbow" and "Country Life" images. At the top of the image is the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) which are dwarf satellite galaxies of our own Milky Way. The LMC is home to the very large star forming region of the Tarantula Nebula (brighter greenish patch). The bright spot just to the right of the SMC is the second largest globular cluster in the night sky 47 Tucanae which contains millions of stars. In the lower section of the image to the left of the hut are Alpha and Beta Centauri, the closest star system to our own Sun. Above that in the Milky Way is the Southern Cross (Crux) Constellation and the dark Coal Sack Nebula. Further along the plane of the Milky Way is the Carina Nebula star forming region.

"A Work In Progress"

I have a plan to produce a reasonably detailed all sky image. I have collected a few panels for the mosaic so far and I will hopefully finish this section of the Milky Way soon. I couldn't resist throwing what I have got so far into my panorama software. After my computer groaned away for a while it spat out this 1.2 Gig image.
A few quick adjustments and massive size reduction later, I give you my work in progress. There are some obvious colour issues there which I will need to try and tune out of the final image but pretty happy with the detail level so far. I suspect I am going to need a bigger computer to finish this project though.

This is the first time I have tried stitching together a picture of The Moon. Made from 16 individual images. The full res version is 10,000 pixels wide. Not entirely happy with a couple of areas of it. I'll try this again another night (knowing what I do now) and if I get better results I'll upload a full high res version somewhere so that you can look at it in greater detail.

"Beam Me Up"

Dark skies + single 30 second exposure + head torch on a string = fun under the stars.

I found this rather unusual tree growing out of a crack in a boulder earlier on in the day and I wanted to capture it under the stars. I did a number of various compositions and lighting methods on it. As I was about to leave the area I decided to just let my hair down and go crazy with some light painting. This is my favorite shot from the night.

"The Golden Mountain"

Cradle Mountain, Tasmania. AUS

Cradle Mountain in the World Heritage listed Cradle Mt - Lake St Clair National Park is one of the iconic vistas of Tasmania and after visiting there for the first time I can totally see why. Walking around the popular 7 km long Dove Lake circuit track with snow falling all around me was a magical experience and because it was out of season in winter I basically had the whole place to myself. The building on the right is a boat shed that was built in the 1940's.

Managed to get a lucky break in the snow clouds which enabled The Sun to break through and bathe the mountain in a soft golden hour light.

"Space Launch"

Trial Bay, Tasmania. AUS

My one and only nightsky scape from my recent trip to Tasmania and about the only time I saw the stars. It was either raining or just cloudy for most of the time. About half an hour after I did this shoot the clouds rolled back in. The faint bands and patches in the sky are from thin cloud so even for this shot I didn't have completely clear skies. Crescent moon just off to the top right of frame is lighting up the landscape.
I had a star trail shoot in progress before I did this but after only 15 minutes or so a couple of guys came down the road to launch their boat and seeing as I was setup in the water at the end of the boat ramp I had to move.

Tasman Peninsula Rainbow

Not my usual thing I know. I recently spent a week away on holidays in Tasmania. I didn't do as much night sky shooting as I would like due to the weather, but I have a few daytime terrestrial shots to share in the coming days/weeks.

Sometimes you just have to be lucky. It had been raining fairly consistently the whole day, but I decided to make the walk to the lookout regardless. The sun broke through the clouds when I arrived and I was rewarded this view. 3 panel panorama.

Just for fun- Spot The Trails

I love how that even in trail form some objects in space are fairly easy to identify with just a little knowledge of the night sky.
So here is a challenge. See if you can identify all the objects on the following list in this image. Most are very easy but others might take a little longer to identify.

1. The Moon (and no, not the one in my logo)
2. Venus
3. A Plane
4. A Satellite Flare
5. A Meteor
6. Sirius
7. Orions Belt
8. Betelgeuse
9. Orions Sword
10. The Pleiades (Seven Sisters)

Some things that might help you:
- This is a seven hour star trail so some objects have had time to travel through the frame completely while others finish in the frame.
- I live in Australia so if you are in the northern hemisphere things might appear upside down and back to front to how you normally view... more »

There was another celestial event other than the Perseid meteor shower over the weekend (and one more suited to my location in the southern hemisphere).  I had actually forgotten about this close conjunction until I noticed how close they were together when I was packing away my timelapse setup just before dawn Sunday morning.  Quickly setup the telescope and snapped of a few images.  It has been a goal of mine to capture The Moon and a Planet in the one field of view with my telescope.
Two image composite- one for The Moon and Jupiter and another that I over exposed to capture the Galilean Moons.

NEQ6 Pro Telescope Mount
Canon 1000D (all the batteries for my two other cameras were on the chargers after shooting all night)

"Weathering The Test Of Time"

'The Rock' is a large outcrop of mainly quartzite that rises 360m above the Riverina plains of southern NSW, Australia.  It was originally called 'Hanging Rock' after the large boulder which overhang the eastern face (left), but when this boulder, well,  stopped hanging in 1874, the name of it (and the town that resides next to it) was changed to simply 'The Rock'.

I have had this shot planned for quite a while but I had to wait until I had the right moon phase, weather and time of year.  Shot at about 2am this morning with a last quarter moon just rising on the horizon behind me.  14 shot panorama.

For those who haven't seen it yet, this is my latest compilation of night scenes from the southern hemisphere. At 1:19 I've added a scene shot with a 5 x 5dmkII camera rig, covering a 360 x 195 degree view of the sky. The result is a sharp 8k full dome print. I plan to show more of these in the future. The clip won 1st prize in the 2012 David Malin awards. Please share if you like it.

An old shot, reprocessed.
"Total Eclipse Of The Heart......Of The Galaxy"
This rare opportunity to image an eclipsed moon against the back drop of the central bulge of The Milky Way presented itself in June 2011.  With the moon about to set for my location in Australia and the sky starting to brighten with the coming dawn I did not have much time at all to capture this image.  I did a couple of fixed tripod test shots and then put my camera on top of my telescope which was imaging the moon close up with another camera at the same time, and this was result.  Single 3 minute exposure with a Canon 60D and the 'plastic fantastic' 50mm F/1.8 lens.

Hi. One from the archives - a year and a 1/2 ago from northern Chile. In the 3 or so years I've been timelapsing the night sky this is the only shot I have where a fireball lit up the sky. Volcanoes - Parinacota and Pomerape. Hiked about a hour to get the shot at 4200m.
