I've been in China for a few days now, and finally got Google+ to work. Sadly it seems to be blocked here. There are so many things to love about Beijing, such as the Forbidden City at night... I took this photo in October on another visit. I went up here last night to enjoy the view again. Hope to post some new photos soon :-)

Solar Impulse, a prototype solar-powered plane, lands in Phoenix, Arizona after the first leg of an expedition across America. The fuel-free electric airplane weighs the same as a small car and flies at an average of 43 mph. The plane is a prototype for a larger solar-powered plane engineers hope will be able to fly round the world by 2015. Filmed with the Sony NEX-5.

Conversation with Myself

In my interpretation of "Conversation With Myself," the tall figure standing with hands behind its back means there is no pointing finger of judgment, just understanding, love, and encouragement. It speaks of the times when we are afraid or doubt ourselves. It reminds us to go to the part of us that calms us, the inner voice that knows better and calls us to remember who we are and who we aspire to be. The small figure represents the part of us that is fearful and lost, doubtful and confused. Each of us has times when we are very human, very flawed, and very lost. The power of the sculpture for me is a the reminder it offers. Even in confusion and doubt, we have access to the wisdom that our spirits hold. We can always have a conversation with ourselves, if we can just remember to do so. My hope is that the piece reminds us who we are.... more »

The first LDS Chapel in Phoenix was completed in 1918 near the corner of 7th and Monroe Streets in Downtown Phoenix. For 30 years it served as a meeting house, a community center, a place for luncheons for businessmen, and the venue for youth dances. As the LDS population in Phoenix grew, more chapels were built and by 1948 this first chapel was sold to another church then eventually demolished in 1969. I can’t think of any reason why the church would have sold it except maybe because the LDS population downtown had begun the flight to the suburbs where they have remained ever since.

The Release the Fear (a.k.a. "The Melted Weapons") Sculpture
The sculpture is titled "Release the Fear," and it was made partially from 8,000 pounds of metal taken from "weapons used in violent acts collected throughout Arizona," according to the inscription at the base of the statue.
Local artist Robert John Miley spent more than ten years gathering materials and funds to erect "Release the Fear". The City of Phoenix donated the space for the statue, and law enforcement donated the confiscated weapons.
There's plenty to see around Miley's Release the Fear sculpture, aside from the colossal sculpture itself. One of the most interesting details surrounding the sculpture are the quotes from famous peace advocates, including this one from Mahatma Gandhi: "You must be the change you wish to see in the world."... more »

Feliz Cinco de Mayo!
Many people mistakenly believe that Cinco de Mayo is Mexican independence day. WRONG. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the 1862 victory by the Mexican army over France at the Battle of Puebla. The Franco-Mexican War lasted from 1861-1867 because the Mexican President Benito Juárez defaulted on his debts to European governments. France, Britain and Spain shipped off naval forces to Veracruz to claim their debts. Britain and Spain were intent on negotiating, but Napoleon's French army decided to annex Mexican territory instead.
Overly confident that their success would be quick and decisive, the French troops attached Puebla de Los Angeles, a small town in east-central Mexico, and overwhelmed the Mexican troops who were led by Texas-born General Ignacio Zaragoza.

2- They are primarily seed-eaters, not insect-eaters. They can and do eat weed seeds, which is certainly valuable to gardeners as well as farmers, or anyone living near overgrown vacant lots. (They do like corn, though.)

The world’s longest underground river, discovered recently in the Amazon Basin in Brazil, has been named Rio Hamza (River Hamza) after Kerala-born scientist Valliya M Hamza, who led the team that found the river.
