Mike Runyon28,442While I realize a lot of people have to work on President's Day, it is worth while asking for the day off. The traffic is considerably less and the crowds are diminished, making for far more photo opportunities. All those who can attend can meet just inside the main gate as there's a large area to gather and then proceed on through the event. There is a lot to see and do, as well as some great food to go with! There are numerous shows and great displays and has been quite the fun time all the years I've attended. You can buy tickets at the main entrance or you can usually pick up discount tickets at Fry's groceries. http://royalfaires.com/arizona/ Even though you may not be able to attend, please share this with any and all you think might be interested in the event!Arizona Renaissance Festival President's Day Photowalk2013-02-18 18:00:0020

I like documenting happy...no matter how long it lasts or how fleeting. I LOVE the moment...that space..... that air..... that place in time. It's why I take pictures.....this kind of picture. Through photos we get to live it again and again.

In Bukovina, a northern region of Romania, the Easter tradition of dyeing eggs has been elevated into an art form. Filmmaker Titus-Armand Napirlica along with production company Jungles in Paris profiles the beautiful work of Elena Craciunescu in The Egg Painter. Craciunescu is one of a dozen egg painters in the small village of Ciocăneşti. The town's buildings feature elaborate motifs, which are reflected in the decorated eggs. Using a process similar to batik, Craciunescu uses an iron-tipped stick, called a kishitze, to apply a wax design onto a clean and drained egg. She then dips the egg into a dye bath and repeats the process of "painting" with wax and submerging it into other dyes to create a layering effect. In the final stage the egg is held up to a heat source that melts the wax and leaves behind a stunning pattern.

The Short Film Showcase spotlights exceptional short videos created by filmmakers from around the web and selected by National Geographic editors. We look for work that affirms National Geographic's mission of inspiring people to care about the planet. The filmmakers created the content presented, and the opinions expressed are their own, not those of the National Geographic Society.

Know of a great short film that should be part of our Showcase? Email SFS@ngs.org to submit a video for consideration.

Ostracod Fireworks

When an ostracod is swallowed, it emits a burst of light, making the cardinal fish spit it out.

"They've been called fish fireworks, and their glowing displays are like nighttime light shows on the water. Ostracods are a very old species of crustacean with a trait called bioluminescence. That's a fancy way of saying they light up, like fireflies. But unlike fireflies, ostracods have extracellular bioluminescence. They shoot light out of their bodies and into the water. The behavior is part mating ritual, part defense mechanism.

There are ostracods in every world ocean that are luminescent, but only in the Carribbean do you find these ones that have these complex patterns, and it's probably related to the closing of the Panama Isthmus about 3 million years ago. It could startle their predators visually, or it could actually bring in the predator of their attacker, which is called the burglar alarm effect.

In this gif the tiny ostracod is almost eaten by the much larger fish, but the cardinal fish spits the ostracod out once the ostracod begins to emit light. Exactly why this causes the cardinal fish to spit the ostracods isn't known, but there are theories."

Joshua Trees
Joshua trees don't have annual growth rings like typical trees, so accurately determining their age is quite difficult! Instead, scientists measure the height of a Joshua tree and divide it by an estimate of growth per year. One tree in California is thought to be over 1,000 years old!

Down she came and found a boat , beneath a willow left afloat and round about the prow she wrote. The Lady of Shalott.. Lying robed in snowy white which loosely blew from left to right , the leaves upon her falling light.through the noised of the night...she floated down to Camelot..( I have known this poem by heart for many years.. beautiful poem)

" The blue-ringed octopus, despite its small size, carries enough venom to kill 26 adult humans within minutes. Their bites are tiny and often painless, with many victims not realizing they have been envenomated untilrespiratory depression and paralysis start to set in. No blue-ringed octopus antivenom is available yet, making it one of the deadliest reef inhabitants in the ocean. "

Light Pillars at Fort Wainwright near Fairbanks Alaska.
In most places on Earth, a lucky viewer can see a Sun-pillar, a column of light appearing to extend up from the Sun caused by flat fluttering ice-crystals reflecting sunlight from the upper atmosphere. Usually these ice crystals evaporate before reaching the ground. During freezing temperatures, however, flat fluttering ice crystals may form near the ground in a form of light snow, sometimes known as a crystal fog. These ice crystals may then reflect ground lights in columns not unlike a Sun-pillar.

Race against the tide, risking death under huge blocks of ice

The people of Kangiqsujuaq in Canada go to great lengths to add variety to their diet of seal meat, venturing under the sea ice during the extreme low tides of the spring equinox to gather mussels.

It's a race against time. They have less than half an hour to search these temporary caverns before the tide rushes back in. A look-out keeps watch for the returning tide, but warning shouts can't be too loud in case the echoes bring down the ice.

Marine Biologist Shows What A Baby Swordfish Looks Like
Marine biologist Juan C. Levesque captured a stunning close-up of a tiny baby swordfish on his finger tip. “Gladiator of the sea”, the minuscule creature can be measured in millimetres, but when fully grown, reaches 3 meters in length!
“Born with a short snout and prickly scales, swordfish develop rapidly,” Levesque writes in his article on the species. “Researchers in the Mediterranean Sea estimated the average growth rate of post-larvae/juvenile swordfish at somewhere between one-eighth and one-quarter of an inch per day.”
The baby swordfish might look totally defenseless, but like Levesque writes, “these fish are fighters from day one.” Don’t let this baby fool you – he already feeds on other fish larvae!

 Red jade vine -
If you want tropical climbers in your life then you will be hard pressed to find a specimen more exotic than the outrageous Red jade vine - mucuna bennettii. Native to Papua New Guinea, this species is a relative new comer to the world of science being formally described by Victorian government botanist Ferdinand von Mueller in 1876.
The amazing, chandelier-like clusters of brilliant red flowers chain together to form a 3' to 4' long raceme. It is a popular choice in gardens that can accommodate it, but it will require certain conditions to thrive.

While it will flourish in tropical regions, it will do well in semi tropical regions too. While it will take as much warmth and light as it can get, its roots must be in shade.  You will know if it gets to cold for it as the leaves will start to yellow and drop. While it will flourish in tropical regions, it will do well in semi tropical regions too. While it will take as much warmth and light as it can get, its roots must be in shade.  You will know if it gets to cold for it as the leaves will start to yellow and drop. This normally occurs if the temperature falls below 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

It is not a particularly difficult plant to grow and you can start off the Mucuna benettii in a container, but it will need to be as large as you can cope with. Be aware that it will eventually grow to become a very large, woody climber. It can be used to climb a large tree or a very large pergola, just remember, it does need room to spread.

There are  reports of Mucuna bennettii growing to over 100 feet long, with vines covered in meter-long flower clusters.

Mucuna bennettii will flower in the autumn, which if properly pruned, will commence at or around the two-year mark.___

➊ Behind the scenes, Google+ has been making changes to its algorithm. To get engagement back up and put the "social back into social," your best best is to find a niche Google Community that really resonates with you, and then mostly use that (for example, I've launched Over Fifty and Fit that anyone is welcomed to join: https://goo.gl/pUOJM9 ).

Google+ Tips Alert: Here are 5 G+ trends you need to know about immediately:

➊ Behind the scenes, Google+ has been making changes to its algorithm. To get engagement back up and put the "social back into social," your best best is to find a niche Google Community that really resonates with you, and then mostly use that (for example, I've launched Over Fifty and Fit that anyone is welcomed to join: https://goo.gl/pUOJM9 ).
➋ G+ is no longer emphasizing people but rather, it's focusing on topics. This is why it's now harder to find people's photos, their About Me section, etc.
➌ G+ has changed how it prioritizes. In search, often Communities will come first, then after that comes Collections, and then (almost as a below-the-fold afterthought) comes G+ social.
➍ Engagement for us die-hard G+ users has dropped dramatically (analytics don't lie; for example, I have over 15,000 followers on G+ social, and over 30,000 followers on some of my collections, and yet I get relatively few comments or shares (relative to the number of followers, as compared to other social channels). G+ used to be my most engaging, reciprocal social channel, but Pinterest passed them up over a year ago, as has FB and even StumbleUpon.
➎ My favorite part of social is providing value, getting to know people and having interesting conversations. I’ve been with G+ since its private launch years ago and I still love and respect it.Google has good reasons for making these changes, and as long as they remain king of search, they will be a worthwhile social channel. It's just that how you use G+ might need to change if want to your engagement levels to rise (instead of decrease). ___➊ Behind the scenes, Google+ has been making changes to its algorithm.
