Lion Yawn

On our first game drive a couple of years ago, our guide parked the vehicle a couple of meters away from a pride of young male lions. Managed to snap several of them yawning.

Goliath Heron
(Ardea goliath)

I framed this "Reusereier" at Like Panic bird hide.

The largest heron in South Africa. The back and wings are dark grey with a rufous neck and underpants. The bill is very large and the long legs hang slightly below the horizontal in flight. Young birds are browner above and buff underneath. Could at a distance be mistaken for the purple heron, which is smaller, more slenderly built and with steaks down the side of the neck. Stands for long periods in deeper water, waiting for prey.

Pied Kingfisher

Lake Panic bird Hide, near Skukuza

The only black-and-white kingfisher in the South African region. The mail is identified by a second , narrower black band across the chest. Bold and tame. Often hunts by hovering over the water before diving.

Young Wildlife

Hyaena (crocuta crocuta). As mentioned in my other post, sometimes it's better to spend some time at a sighting (or passing several times). After several visits without luck the cubs where finally outside and playing in the first sunlight.

We drove past this hyaena den several days without luck, just this one morning one of the cubs was playing/fooling around.

Lilac-breasted Roller
(Coracias caudatus)

The average size of the Lilac-breasted Roller is 14.5 inches. The washed green head is large, the neck is short, the greenish yellow legs are rather short and the feet are small. The beak is strong, arched and hooked-tipped. The tail is narrow and of medium length. The back and scapulars are brown. The shoulder of the wing, outer webs of the flight feathers and the rump are all violet. The bases of the primaries and their coverts are pale greenish blue and the outer tail feathers are elongated and blackish. The chin is whitish, shading to rich lilac of the breast. The underparts are greenish blue. The bill is black and the eyes are brown. It has large wings and strong flight.

Lake Panic Bird Hide, Skukuza, Southern Kruger Park

Lake Panic bird hide near Skukuza provides secret views of a hippo- and croc-filled dam which is a magnet for birds of all stripes. Big raptors, herons, jacanas, thick-knees, kingfishers, ducks and many more inhabit the convenient dead leadwoods and thick surrounding bush, or dart around on the lily pads. Best sightings are early morning or sunset.

A complentary post to +Morkel Erasmus "Hidden Hunter". It just illustrates how difficult/frustrating it sometimes is photographing wildlife on whatever continent you're in. Somtimes you're just late (like me), you don't have a clear sighting, the lighting is bad, the sighting is overcrowded, car/4x4 badly positioned, ....

Also a quick post to say hello and fill some space in my stream,I've been very busy lately, some bussiness trips to the USA, and some very tight deadlines to maintain (work related), holiday in South Africa (which was fun and more than welcome).

Finally found some time again to read up on G+. After holiday's it's always quite busy at the office (new projects, follow up on emails ...) Weather was not so superb in Belgium the last 14 days, so didn't spend much time outside. One day we visited 'Wildgehege Hellenthal' a small park in the the northern Eifel region (Germany). 3 times a day they 'walk the birds'.

"Getting ready"

The white rhinoceros or square-lipped rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) is one of the five species of rhinoceros that still exist. It has a wide mouth used for grazing and is the most social of all rhino species. The white rhino consists of two subspecies: the southern white rhino, with an estimated 17,460 wild-living animals at the end of 2007 (IUCN 2008), and the much rarer northern white rhino. The northern subspecies has very few remaining, all in captivity.

Shot was taken in the vast Balule Nature Reserve in the Greater Kruger National Park in the late afternoon.

Talking big/wide trees

The Sunland ‘Big Baobab’ is in Modjadjiskloof in Limpopo Province, South Africa and is famous internationally for being the widest of its species in the world. Africa is symbolised by these magnificent trees. The Sunland Big Baobab is carbon dated to be around 6000 years old.

The Sani Pass is a spectacular mountain road that is a well-known entry point into Lesotho from South Africa’s Natal Drakensberg Park. It is the gateway to the ‘Roof of Africa’ scenic route that links the spectacular scenery of the Drakensberg with the mountains of northern Lesotho.
