Shells Bells5,180Best of 2012 CircleThis circle is some of the G+ awesomeness that has enriched my life this year - and I am grateful.  A while back +Sean Cowen asked what G+ has meant to us.  After watching Brene Brown's TEDTalks (http://www.ted.com/speakers/brene_brown.html) I realize that for me, G+ has been a lesson in vulnerability and courage. I have been humbled by the courage of every one of you.  I love that women post no make-up pictures and that you all speak your minds (your clever, creative, crazy & beautiful minds...). I have been blown away by the public sharing regarding topics as deep as abuse and depression - talk about vulnerability and putting yourself out there - absolutely amazing.  By doing so, you have helped others in ways you may never know.  <3Inspiration's what you are to me, inspiration, look... see.  Led Zeppelin - Thank YouYou have inspired me. (warning TL:DR personal stuff below) Oh, & I did include some new peeps.  If they're freaks, blame +Ben Zaitz. This month, I gathered some courage and let three people see me in, what was to me, a position of vulnerability. The first was a very dear friend from Elementary School.  For the past few years, I avoided HIRLing because I was ashamed of my weight and I guess I didn't want to disappoint him.  The same reason recently kept me from seeing a dear High School friend.  I saw them and each did not care that I was not perfect, they love me for me.  Mann, it was great to see their faces again, talk in person and have some non-virtual hugs.  <3I attribute this change in thinking to your responses to a July post: https://plus.google.com/115807723984369772514/posts/Ui2TQBPuELKAmong the other awesome words from you peeps, +Alvin Stearns wrote, "Never again compare yourself to others so that you make unfair and useless judgments about yourself or others.  That includes comparing yourself to you in the past."  The third was that, with your encouragement on a private post, I actually asked a guy out.  I would have never even considered doing that a year ago.  (He has a gf, so no deal, but it's all good cause he was cool.)I know these are little things, but I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.  And thank you to +matthew rappaport, Bobbi Jo Woods and +Tiffany Henry for coordinating the first NYCHIRL. Due to my kiddies, I couldn't see +Daria Musk and +Ryan Van Sickle2012-12-31 06:09:4450026231CC G+

John Kellden7,662Here's a few people who are not too shabby.I will spend a week in Greece with wife and kids. Have promised not to bring laptop, and not cheat too much with the G+ mobile thing either. This means you will have to wander aimlessly through the Google Plus Ghosttown while I'm working my tan, enjoying food and wine and sploshing about in the pool. But have no fear, quality content and even higher quality conversation is just a few clicks away, even if you only add a few of the people in the below circle. You all behave now, and talk more in a week.2012-06-18 09:24:0950043238CC G+

Meilani MacDonald2,935Small Business circle 1 of 2Hello small business peeps! I'm a small biz person and naturally I want to connect with other small biz owners. I really feel we all have so much to share with each other and to learn from one another as we navigate this world called Google+ that provides us with so many great tools and resources to support our small biz efforts. I also think it's a good thing to support each other, and lift each other up as we work towards our goals. So I've been collecting small biz people and shared small biz & entrepreneurs circles, because those are the people I most want in my own circles, to follow, to connect with, and to support. I have 700+ small bizzes in my circle, so I've split it into two circles to share with you. This is #1 of the 2, and #2 is next. Let's hear it for small business!Btw, speaking of supporting small bizzes, I host a TGIF Biz Networking Hangout every Friday at 4pm pst, now a Hangout on Air. It is a chance to give yourself and your biz a little promo, and I feature special guests who are small biz owners and who have all kinds of good advice and info to share with other small biz owners. Please check my profile for more info or to watch last Friday's episode, where we talked about QR codes and great ideas for how to use them, and also talked about the value of keeping content fresh on your blogs and web sites, and when and why to blog, or not to blog. #smallbusiness #sharedcircles #entrepreneur +CircleCount +Shared Circles Shared a Circle with You +Shared a Circle with you2012-05-28 18:22:494491159CC G+

Rob Gordon22,157*Entrepreneurs, Self-Employed & Small Business OwnersUPDATED SHARED CIRCLE: Part 1 of 2: A through L (by last name).Link to Part (M-Z):         http://goo.gl/0Fcg1Link to Supplemental 1: http://goo.gl/AXXrWLink to Supplemental 2: http://goo.gl/TZKKeLike to Supplemental 3: http://goo.gl/3x6hINOTE:  This circle is no longer maintained in its present form but is still a good place to start if you are looking for entrepreneurs to follow and connect with here.  It has mostly been replace with a Google+ community of the same name that you can find at http://goo.gl/ejG9P**********************This is the most recent update to the popular "entrepreneurs" circle that posted a few months ago. As you can see, it has gotten bigger than 500 people so I have had to split it alphabetically into two parts. These two circles includes the self employed, small business owners, independent contractors, small startup companies and pretty much anyone trying to make it outside of the traditional economy. This is different from the other business circles of this type in that it doesn't include too many of the "celebrity entrepreneurs" and instead has mostly people with their own business or venture. There are more than 800 people here, but this has been reviewed extensively since it was last published -lots of fantastic new people have been added, and some have been dropped - mostly because they don't interact much. The end result is a circle of really awesome business people who actively interact with others here and have a small business or entreprenueral mindset. This is a really diverse group and includes entrepreneurs of all stripes - some have well established ventures and are wildly successful, others are just getting started and haven't made it yet. As can be expected, it is a little tech heavy, but represents most industries and many different types of business. There are even a handful of people here who have traditional jobs, but seem to have an interest in small business issues and always seem welcome to help entrepreneurial efforts. The people in these circles post all manner of things - not just business, but all are smart and interesting people so I recommend that you check this out.I do want to add the disclaimer that this is in no way "definitive" - there are millions of entrepreneurs on Google+ and this is just a tiny fraction of them - the ones I have curated. It seems that about two seconds after I publish this I always remember someone I should have included so just me know if you think you should be here. If you were to characterize game systems as FAE characters, with approaches like Detailed, Consistent, Creative, Realistic, Collaborative, etc. what approaches would you put in the set, and how would you fill out the 'character sheet'?

node.js has more modules for it than any other system, beating out Maven Central (Java) and Rubygems, according to Modulecounts, which collects data by scraping the relevant websites once a day via a cron job, storing the data in a Postgresql database, and calculating growth rates by averaging data over the last week. Care is taken not to count different versions of the same module as different modules.

A very useful tutorial, but I was disappointed that +CodingEntrepreneurs decided to play it so safe regarding the legality of using YP data that the viewers are actively mislead. In the US there is no copyright on mere collections of facts like names, addresses, and phone numbers (and the same goes for prices on e-commerce sites), so scraping and reusing that data would have been entirely fine (Europe has copyright on such databases currently, but that seems likely to change soon).

Or a federal government website could have been used as the example since the federal government can't hold any copyright on data it creates at all!

When we launched Google+ over three years ago, we had a lot of restrictions on what name you could use on your profile. This helped create a community made up of real people, but it also excluded a number of people who wanted to be part of it without using their real names.

Over the years, as Google+ grew and its community became established, we steadily opened up this policy, from allowing +Page owners to use any name of their choosing to letting YouTube users bring their usernames into Google+. Today, we are taking the last step: there are no more restrictions on what name you can use.

We know you've been calling for this change for a while. We know that our names policy has been unclear, and this has led to some unnecessarily difficult experiences for some of our users. For this we apologize, and we hope that today's change is a step toward making Google+ the welcominga... more »

A retrospective on #nymwars, Google as the Identity Network, and the NSA

The #nymwars  in the light of  #NSA  history and news, including a summary for those who weren't on the front lines -- and reflections on Google's +Jared Cohen's announcement of their new circumvention network this week.

Yes, I used to work at Tor, but I got involved in Tor because I was involved in civil liberties and free speech -- and anti-surveillance -- for decades before.

If you count having resented being included under Hoover's ridiculous surveillance of civil rights activists as a kid?  Half a century... that's a long interest in civil liberties.

Public interest internet?  Only a little over half that.

Do you trust Google to roll out a proxy network for oppressed countries after the #nymwars ?   Not their motivations, mind yo... more »

Salon Magazine has featured my proposal for a unique and potentially effective way for individual voters - one at a time - to rebel effectively against the political crime called gerrymandering.  It requires no changes in law, no court decisions or ballot initiatives.  We could all start this rebellion tomorrow, without any cooperation from a corrupt political caste. It would benefit BOTH Democrats and Republics as well as third parties.  Above all, it would reduce the radicalization of American politics that is tearing the country apart.

The proposal is simple, effective... but it might call for many of you out there holding your nose for five minutes. A small sacrifice to save the republic.

Have a look... and spread the word.

BUG: Government occasionally shuts down

Found this gem of a bug report this morning:
https://github.com/WhiteHouse/fortyfour/issues/3

I noticed a bug over the past week or so and it seems reproducible:

1. Go to U.S. Government.
2. U.S. Government is shut down.

Expected results: Government should be working.

I'm unable to debug or propose a fix since there's not an open, transparent stack trace. Conflicting error messages are being thrown as well.

Hope you can resolve this soon. It would seem that the U.S. Government would value 100% uptime in order to be a reliable and trustworthy source for the rest of the world.

Thanks! Love this project and would like to continue using it.

The comments on the bug are awesome.

The biggest mistake I made in running my first real business was focusing on conserving money I raised, and spending it only on the essential stuff I needed in order to keep the company afloat. It took me exactly the allotted amount of time to run out of that money. Instead, I should have focused on spending the money I had on stuff that generated additional value for the business.

That's why I'm tired of this "non-essential" argument floating around where people are wondering why government has so many "non-essential" employees. Listen -- there's a difference, in management, between "essential" and "adding value." Chances are, if you've worked at any large enterprise, you've been in a non-essential role, meaning: the business can survive without you. But that doesn't mean that you don't add value to the business, or generate a... more »

For those who don't see the value of the recent revelations about the NSA's subversion of internet security standards and implementations, take a look at the additional context and discussion that is coming out and gaining attention, for example this post by John Gilmore:

Speaking as someone who followed the IPSEC IETF standards committee

make so usable that it would be used by default throughout the

  *  NSA employees participted throughout, and occupied leadership roles

I love this talk about how gender stereotypes affect us, often in a subtle manner.

* Stereotype Threat
-- Stereotypes interfere with the brain, depleting working memory capacity, and the effect is larger for higher performers (2005 finding)
-- Most people are unaware of how the stereotypes affect them. When asked, people will say they are unaffected by stereotypes but the brain imaging shows the opposite.
-- In a study of AP exams, filling out demographic information before the exam is connected to women scoring lower on the exam.
* What affects people more are the beliefs that are salient in their local environment. For instance, asian women were asked to take a math exam. Some were exposed to a positive stereotype regarding Asians and math. Others were exposed to a negative stereotype regarding women and math. A third control group was exposed to no stereotypes. Those who... more »

…everything old is new again. The resurgent interest in local foods and home-scale preservation—from canning, jamming, freezing, brewing, fermenting, and otherwise experimenting with food—is happening coast to coast. Taking up the pot and the pan, the cheesecloth and strainer, the canning jar and the wine bottle, homesteaders are beginning to reweave the web of culture lost in the toxic downdrift of the industrial food supply. Food preservation is hooked into all the values of homesteading—self-sufficiency, community resilience, DIY for fun and pleasure—a reminder that food is not something that’s done for us, but something that we do with one another. Remaking our relationship to food is one of the central homesteading pleasures and practices, a radical act that can go a long way toward growing into our role as producers rather than consumers. — From “Urban Homesteading: Heirloom Skills forSustainable Liv... more »

Hi all - Would like to get some feedback on a new open source lib.

We realized that for many CRUD web apps, a library that lets you synchronize "diffsets" (lists of changes the client makes to JavaScript objects) can replace server-side controllers and views, so you don't end up doing MVC on both the server and client.

We reduced web apps to a set of authorization rules and models. You can interact with document-style objects on the client, but keep the power of relational datastores on the server.

It's a relational Firebase for CRUD apps, if you will.

I love the idea here that there are three capitalisms, "Yeoman Capitalism", "Corporate Capitalism", and "Supercapitalism," but I'm not sure I agree entirely with Michael O. Church's description of each of them.

His description of Yeoman Capitalism is pretty good - this is the capitalism that Adam Smith wrote about, and it is indeed governed by an invisible hand. When companies are engaged in providing real goods and services to each other, and make money by satisfying the needs of others, capitalism works really well.

I like to think that O'Reilly is a great example of Yeoman Capitalism. We make our money by providing things that people pay us for, and I like to think we've created more value for society than we've captured for ourselves, which is how I think it ought to be.  (There is many a multi-billion dollar company whosef... more »

Magic as a Skill

No, not fantasy magic, but stage magic, prestidigitation, misdirection, card tricks, etc.

Deceive could probably be used in vanilla Fate Core with a few well-chosen stunts, but I'm not sure that competency at misdirection in making a coin disappear implies the ability to straight-up lie to someone's face.

Another somewhat more general purpose solution would be to perhaps add a Dexterity (a sort of counterpart to Athletics) skill with more-or-less equivalent stunts.

What do you think? Is this worth adding a skill for? How else would you model someone wanting their character to be a magician or something similar?

[Edited to replace 'Deceit' with 'Deceive', as per FC]

I'm re-reading Fate Core in preparation for running a game, and I ran across an emphasized bit I am curious about on page 71:

"If a player wants to compel another character, it costs a fate point to propose the complication. The GM can always compel for free, and any player can propose a compel on his or her own character for free."

Is this meant to apply to PCs as well? In other words, does suggesting a compel for another player's character cost a fate point?

If so, what's the reasoning behind this?

We haven't settled on a setting or genre yet, but are currently considering ideas as diverse as 'superheroes university', 'alien refugee private investigators', and 'treasure hunting in space'. I am open to other suggestions, and the group will pick a final setting together.

Bioengineers look beyond patents
Synthetic-biology company pushes open-source models.

When DNA2.0, a company that synthesizes made-to-order genes, needed to conduct a few routine experiments using a fluorescent protein, its lawyers dug up more than 1,000 US patents covering their use. DNA2.0 decided to avoid the legal thicket by engineering several dozen fluorescent proteins from scratch. But the company, based in Menlo Park, California, was convinced that something had to change.

Last month, DNA2.0 deposited gene sequences encoding three of its fluorescent proteins into an open-access collection of recipes for DNA ‘parts’, molecular building blocks used to engineer organisms — often bacteria — to carry out specific functions. The company vows not to pursue its patent rights against anyone using the sequences.
