Whilst there are many methods and mental models that can be used for mapping a business environment, the act of mapping is a critical step in determining strategy. I'm always surprised by how many companies create strategy with what can only be described as poor situational awareness.

In this video, I go through the process of mapping and cover some fairly basic economic principles from inertia to cycles of change whilst looking at the question of strategies for a open economy and what matters more - strategy or openness?  This video touches the surface of the topic of organisational warfare and competition, nothing too complex and we don't even go into the various strategic plays, options like tower and moat, impact on organisational structure, culture etc. It's about 1 hr 20 mins.

+Mark Goodge +Daniel Lemire You never negotiate from a position in which you inherently declare yourself as weak or that you're bluffing.

Equally you never let slip an opportunity to change a market in your favour e.g. resolution on the taxation issues. PRISM is an opportunity to exploit and exploited it should be.

If you didn't know then I'm a big fan of Google but despite this, I'm even more in favour of the EU taking advantage of this situation, even if that requires threatening (and following through on) a ban and investment fund. Privacy is simply the vehicle to gaining a more desirable outcome.

In the past, to take such action would be fairly declared as protectionism because there was no other reason. Fortunately in this case, PRISM gives us all the reason and allows for the EU to declare a 'Breach of Trust' even if EU states were usingit (... more »

Given +Edd Dumbill recent post on a Speaker for the Crazy -  https://medium.com/self-aware/d18fae7c5ca0 - a short presentation from me on the basics of strategy, mapping and structure.

Basically, at the heart of this is mapping which if you don't do, you won't get the whole process and so don't worry. Apparently 67% of successful general are bombarding hills. Good luck with that.

My view on the Morozov Meme hustler article

Evgeny Morozov clearly revels in his role as troll to the 'neterati. It is a similar business model to that used by Andrew Keen and others: wind people up with exaggerated ad hominem attacks, occupy a naysaying niche so that you are guaranteed to get press as the other side of every discussion, and thereby sell more books. But what I find more annoying is that he seems to think he is the only person in the tech field with a background in international affairs, or critical thinking skills. This means he gets away with a lot, because he gives the impression of being knowledgeable, even if he never actually poses alternative ideas to those he critiques so combatively. When I saw him speak at SXSW a couple of years ago, I remember being surprised to see people nodding sagely at his stories of the dark side of sharing technologies, whilst thinking "and what do we do about it?" - but his is a sneer,... more »

What if Farmers made House Calls?

+John Robb talks about growing food instead of lawns in http://www.resilientcommunities.com/what-if-farmers-made-house-calls/ :

"One great way to do that is to join a local foodscaping program.

This type of program is like a food subscription at a CSA.  However, in this program, the farmer comes to you.  He/she converts your yard into a high performance garden and teaches you how to garden it successfully.

I think that if we are smart, we’ll be spending more money on foodscaping in ten years than landscaping.   If so, good food will be available everywhere."

+Chris Tackett adds (in http://www.treehugger.com/lawn-garden/what-if-farmers-made-house-calls.html):

"Thankfully, this model already exists, but it needs to grow! Back in 2010, Jaymi wrote about Farmyard, which is anArizona ... more »

I'm proud to say I've supported Cody Wilson and given him licensing advice. This kind of technological monkeywrenching - making repressive and idiotic laws impossible to enforce - is exactly what libertarians ought to be doing.

I've put the notes for my early draft version of the LEF book I'm writing. This work is currently undergoing a massive overhaul to make it more readable, to include LEF examples and to restructure it into something that makes a more coherent and compelling read.

However, I thought I'd put my rough and ready notes up for those interested in the subject.

Old post, updated with a comment on permissive and restrictive licenses.

I've softened my view on permissive licenses in a standards play, I still don't think they're ideal but accept the pragmatic approach of adoption of companies with the risk of a collective prisoner dilemma.

This video of an onstage interview at Social Media Week in New York gives good perspective on +Dale Dougherty's  impact, and the ideals behind the Maker movement: We Are All Makers: Participating in the Design of Our Future, with +Anil Dash. You wouldn't know it from reading Chris Anderson's  _Makers_, but Dale is the one who coined the term and organized the modern maker movement, founding Make magazine in 2004, and launching Maker Faire in 2005.  We recently spun out Maker Media as an independent company; Dale talks about where the Maker movement is going and how fun drives innovation.
