So how awesome is SA today? I'm still away on a long and challenging shoot, and the weather is not being kind.
Still my heart is back home and it rains in Pretoria and who knows what's happening in the Cape.

Greetings peeps from the other side of the world, from late spring in the UK. From the order and function of London

It's grey, cold, raining and full of people , many are wondering around with scarves, hats and boots.
War muffs are worn in the same we wear our sunglasses.

Still it's much closer to final destination. Moral dilemma, our community is about travel in SA, so any photos from Tuscany permitted or no?

I need guidance from the norty and everyone else waking on a Monday morning.

Riddick Full Trailer

So here's the full trailer for the upcoming Riddick movie and we get a lot of Vin Diesel speaking in a silly voice.

But that apart it does look like it's got the potential to be a solid action movie in the way that Pitch Black was. Story goes as follows:

Betrayed by his own kind and left for dead on a desolate planet, Riddick fights for survival against alien predators and becomes more powerful and dangerous than ever before. Soon bounty hunters from throughout the galaxy descend on Riddick only to find themselves pawns in his greater scheme for revenge. With his enemies right where he wants them, Riddick unleashes a vicious attack of vengeance before returning to his home planet of Furya to save it from destruction.

As well as Vin Diesel we've got Karl Urban and Katee Sackhoff (which should improve the acting a bit). Also... more »

Cape View Clifton.

A boutique hotel overlooking the best view in Clifton. Great place, super breakfasts and evening meals.

I had wanted to photograph this property for several years and was approached last September. We had 3 amazing days shooting the property and today was staff and the owners shoot.
This was the view 30 mins before the cold front closed up the view.
Their website is actually one of my favourite shoots and I consider it my portfolio piece.

Nice sunset as well!

Aquaponics - the use of a closed loop system to grow vegetables using fish to supply the nutrients and the vegetables to clean and oxygenate the water.
It typically uses 10% of the water that traditional agriculture uses.
This has to only be a good thing as we will have more conflict over water before the end of this decade.

It's an amazing place and whilst there are seldom lions and elephants walking the streets, you will see them in many reserves.

Had a great shoot this week, Topfloor, the client is involved with supplying precast concrete slabs for affordable housing in Kraifontein, Western Cape.
So your truly was asked to shoot on a building site.
Peerless autumn day, blue skies, no wind, harsh bright sunlight reflective bibs, white concrete slabs and a mix of skin tones to photograph.
It was the 1st of 3 or 4 shoots for the company, updating their marketing for 2013/2014

So my wife travels up to Johannesburg (see the tenuous link) for the National Thoroughbed sales in Germiston.
This morning they are woken at the Emperors Palace by gunfire, police, swat teams, helicopters, AK-47's and all mayhem, apparently there was a cash heist at the Casino
Swat searched the hotel, arrested and unconfirmed reports of shootings.

South Africa Is Awesome ...and so are some of its architects.

Alex Stewart Architects in Cape Town were commissioned to update the left wing of this home, I was commissioned to shoot it.
Shot with a 16-35mm at F8 using a Canon 5D3 and 3 exposures 2 stops apart I have this amazing image.
The weakest part is the lens, its soft towards the edges of the shot which is a real shame as I don't know what to replace the lens with.
Anyway that is my problem, enjoy a sunset architectural shot of a very very expensive home in Constantia, Cape Town, South Africa.

A reminder that the competition photograph needs to be in the ratio of 4:5 ie 400 pixels wide and 500 pixels tall.
For ease of viewing, please make them at least 800 pixels wide and 1000 pixels tall.

If you provide a widescreen or landscape photograph, it will need to be cropped to fit the dimensions and may well not appear as you had hoped.

Norty's, please bump this post to the top every few days so everyone can see the dimensions needed.

(unfortunately this photograph is not useable - it was taken last Friday in Malawi)

Before you go to bed each night and when you get up each morning, please tweet the name of a murdered child to these senators reminding them that they had the power to prevent more voters children be killed.
But they chose to let down their voters and risk sacrificing their children because they did not have the courage or balls to stand up to controlling guns a little bit more.

Watching a fantastic tropical storm in Benin City, no chance to photograph, so taking time to think about where I am and what I'm up to.
In the early 1990's my folks took the family to Kenya -
Samburu, Lake Nivasha, The Masai Mara, Tree Tops and the most amazing 2 weeks safari.
Years later I came to South Africa with a woman called Emma and fell in love. Fortunately Emma and I split up but I stayed in love with Africa - it takes you.
Years later I pulled my Great Aunts carer - a South African from Malmesbury / Stellenbosch, we promptly got married, and stayed in London.
In 2006 I returned to South Africa to start a new life. To see if I could set up a photography business. By the time I'd landed I'd got my first commission, and 5 days later I was shooting villas, luxury apartments and amazing places in and around Cape Town.
Africa wanted me. I was offered a... more »

Re-edit 3/4/2013
This was the 1st shot I took with my Canon 5Dmk1, the day I bought it in the UK. April 20th 2007.

It is totally marred by the sigma 12-24 which i'd used successfully on my EOS 50E / EOS3 & then digitally with my20D, but man it was awful on a better camera
I "accidentally" dropped 6 months later cos it was soft around the edges, poor quality, soft around the edges, had terrible aberrations and distortion and was horrible.

+Gail Browne and I were discussing the weather and contrast in black and white.
I'd noticed that some of here recent posts were softer, more tones of greys, where mine are more likely to be more contrasty.
I joked to say it was probably something to do with the current weather in the UK - grey / cold / snowy / grey / cold and Cape Town - brighter, sunny etc.

Shots and weather do dictate how a... more »

Three shots from my fabulous shoot in the Port of Cape Town, South Africa.
My brief was to record with timelapse the work done on the ship by one of South Africa's largest rope access companies - TOPROPE.
This was the penultimate day of the shoot - Good Friday.

I arrived for the shoot pre dawn to miss the traffic - forgetting its a public holiday so was quick quick to town.
As I pulled in the last section was being cut, sparks and globules of white hot steel being blown in the wind over the ship, and crackling into the harbour.
As I set up, I saw the puddle, so it had to be a part of the shot - otherwise boring orange lit tarmac.
There was a sense of anticipation as the 55 ton section was lifted into the sky and slowly, so slowly lowered to the ground.
