[UPDATE]: Hangout Lower Third gets saved presets and more control

This is a major update and will add a highly requested feature. With the new version you are now able to Save and load presets.

To save a Lower Third, create it first with name, tagline, background and an optional icon. After you have done that, you can enter a name for the preset next to the save button. Once done, click save and it will show up in the list. From now on you can load/unload the preset Lower Third by clicking on the green plus icon. You can also delete a preset by clicking on the red "X".

For now it only saves the Lower Third and NOT the custom overlay.
I will add the saving for custom overlays soon in a minor update. Stay tuned.

I redesigned the interface a bit and made it more structured. It is now divided into four parts: Lower Third, Clock, Custom... more »

Hangout Lower Third gets a Great Update...

The popular +Hangout Lower Third App which allows users of Hangouts to Self Identify, just got even better via an update pushed out this morning.

Most people use this handy Free Hangout App for the 'lower third' portion only (where your name and tagline/website show) but there has been another area which is less commonly used called the "Custom Overlay".

The Custom Overlay option lets you add an additional image to your screen. Shown here as a sidebar of info on a white translucent backdrop, the Custom Overlay can be any size up to 640 x 360 px.

The Issue: When you added this Custom Overlay graphic and wanted to turn it off, you could not do so without also turning off the Lower Third Images at the same time.

The Fix: Now, after this update (you may need to cleary... more »

Hangout App Permissions Explained
Some people were concerned about the permissions all Hangout apps are asking for. I searched the web and didn't find any good write up so I decided to explain those permissions a bit.

There are three main permissions that are required by every app:
► View list of participants in your Hangouts
► View and manage your audio and video feeds
► Know who you are on Google

Those permissions are the following scopes from the Google APIs
✔ plus.me
✔ hangout.av
✔ hangout.participants

So lets break it down to each permission.

① View list of participants in your Hangouts
This scope allows the app to get a list of participants of the Hangout. The information retrieved are limited to the following data:
- displayID: The index of the participant on the filmstrip- hasAppEnabled:... more »

Hangout Lower Third and Safari
I heard a lot of people complaing that +Hangout Lower Third is not working on Safari. This issue is caused by the not fully supported FileReader API. This API is supported in Safari 6.0 so you can upgrade to the latest version of Safari and it should work. In the meantime I enabled a fix that Hangout Lower Third will at least load up for those of you who use Safari <6.0. The only downside is, that you can't use a logo or a custom overlay.

I will look into a solution, but if you can'T wait update Safari to at least 6.0 or use Firefox or Chrome.

Thanks

My apps had a short service outage
To all my beloved Hangout apps users. All my apps were temporarily not available due to some server issues. The service should be back up and running now.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hangout Lower Third: Featured as default app
Since last night +Hangout Lower Third will show up as a default app when you start a hangout for the first time or never used other apps before. This makes it more accessible for new users and easier to find. If you haven't tried out Lower Third yet, you should give it a try. It is very useful especially in Hangouts On Air which are now enabled world wide.

Hangout Lower Third - Minor Update
by +Moritz Tolxdorff.

It has been a while since I posted an update, but today I have at least a minor update for you.

I added two new features to my app and more to come:
Optional Real-Time-Clock: Will show your local time in the upper corner
First use Notice: Will show a notice that the image is mirrored
Donate Link: Please support my work by donating

I am still working on a better storage system for presets which I am hopefully getting done this week. This will enable you to save your last 5 lower thirds.

If you have any other suggestions please let me know.

Hangout Lower Third - Fun Facts

Hangout Lower Third was released on May 14th  and got added as a featured app on June 5th. Since then the usage of this app increased a lot.

I want to share some numbers with you which show the overall usage of Hangout Lower Third from May 14th until today.

I am really impressed of how many of you are using it every day in Hangouts. I really want to thank all of you and your support. I never thought that this app would have such a huge impact within the community!

Hangout Lower Third - Small Update

I added an experimental feature to my app that will allow you to load your last used Lower Third across Hangouts. It is using your local browser storage so it will be still available when you close your browser. It doesn't work across different computer, but it's a start.

It's maybe a bit buggy, but it is already working. Feel free to play around with it. I will keep working on it the next days to give it a final polish.

Hangout on Air fix
I also added a different set of backgrounds if you are in a Hangout on Air. This was necessary because the old one was covering the Google+ watermark in the streamed video.

Please let me know if you encounter any issues!

Hangout Lower Third - Public Release
The time has come, I finally release the latest version of my lower third app to the public. The new API 1.1 is live and so is my app.

Feature list
► Create a custom Lower Third on-the-fly (name, tagline, backdrop, logo)
► Add a custom overlay

Install App (opens a new Hangout): http://goo.gl/VjrO5

You can combine both of these features as you like. If you want to create a custom overlay you just have to create an image (640x360 pixel) and design it the way you like. You can also use the custom overlay for simply show any image you want.

These features are just a start and I will extend this app with more stuff.

Please send me your feedback and suggestions

Is that the app +Chee Chew was looking for?
