I really like Barn Owls, in Canada we don't see them much at all anymore.

This is a captive bird exceptionally well cared for at the Canadian Raptor Conservancy.

I took a lot of images of this bird, was really trying to work with the 1DX on a fast incoming object.

Haven't been posting much lately as work life has been trumping any hobby life. That said, this weekend I'm taking a break and heading out to shoot some captive raptors for The Canadian Raptor Conservancy, should be a good time on Saturday. Hopefully some images worth sharing when I get home!

Really loving the 1DX. I never, and I mean never (until now so not never? :), post images SOOC without any editing, noise cleaned up etc. This time I had to. The MK IV is a great body, it managed to produce some very decent high ISO images for me over the years, it also took a lot more effort to get those images in a useable form.

The 1DX is in a different league. These images have only been cropped.

1/1600th
f2.8 (due to necessity)
ISO 12,800.

Not too bad for no NR.

Hello everyone! These images were taken at Raymond Barlow's Birds-in-Flight workshop near Toronto Canada last year. I wanted to share them to showcase that despite not being as thrilling as taking photographs of wild birds, it is a terrific exercise in learning how to use your gear. I  started with my 1DX coupled with my 600mm f/4 MkII. I soon found that despite being captive, these birds fly as hard and fast as wild birds. Luckily there was a gentleman there with TWO 300mm f/2.8s! He kindly let me borrow one. I would never have been able to capture these without it. Proximity was less than 30 feet most of the time. The 600 was way too much lens LOL Shutter speeds averaged 1/1250 to 1/1600. ISO was set to 800. Manual exposure and evaluative metering. Center point AF with expansion set to the "+" shaped crosshairs. I hope you like them!

Its a Jeep thing....ok so I'm crossing a road that I know well, its in the middle of a swamp thats suddenly thawed. No problem in the Jeep!

I took a quick snap as I'm crossing as no one was going to believe me otherwise :)

Pretty impressed with this body thus far.

This sequence is of my dog running at me at approx 7 to 7.3 yards per second and a ball being hurled by a chuck it. Dog stays in complete focus and ball ignored nicely.

Normally on the Mark IV, I'd have had at least 1 or so images OOF in this type of sequence, not the 1DX. Its focus ability is nearly cheating. I shot 106 images in total while the dogs were playing, 105 in complete perfect focus and the other I knew when I shot it I screwed up.

If you like sorting through images you know are tough to discard this is the camera for you :)

Just a Barred Owl for the moment. Pretty crazy bird picking up small frogs that are starting to pop back up, saw this guy doing this while driving by and had to stop and hide for a few hours. At this point he was actually caching.

I usually try for a nice clean background, but this actually shows a real world example of where these birds live in the winter. They like to be near places that have a lot of food, and obviously you're going to find edibles near barns.

Right before sundown he had to get active. Nothing like trying to get an all white bird against an all white background flying like a bullett. Its a challenge for even the best AF system.

It's been a long time coming. Here's a proper blog post I just completed on the epic sighting we had last November in the Kalahari of Lions hunting and taking down an Eland...

This is the first full-on series of this event that I've posted as a collection. Lion populations in Africa are decreasing rapidly, so being able to witness sightings like these will become rarer by the day.
