There is a rumor about a graphic novel that illustrates the ten most terrifying stories of the Bible, but no one knows how it's called or where it can be found. Help?

I wish HBO made a show based on choice parts of the Bible. That would really be something. The best candidate would be the book of Samuel (Saul and David), closely followed by Genesis (from Abraham to Joseph, uncensored) and Judges (sex, violence and no real plot -- hell yeah!) Kings also has some great stories, but is too wide in scope to make a good narrative. If you're less concerned about staying true to the original text, a show about the period between the Fall and the Deluge could be pretty awesome as well.

The Bible TV series is an attempt to hijack Hebrew mythology and turn it into American history. Good laugh with erudite company, something of a bore on its own.

I think I'll start observing the Sabbath. Not in the sense of going through the ancient rites, the Old Ones seem content for now, but in the sense of avoiding any kind of work-related activity or work-related thinking on weekends. Even if the deadliest deadline is looming above me like vengeful Dagon, even if I actually want to go over reports and business plans, I will wait for Sunday for these profanities.

"I feel quite justified in believing that games and sports ought not be ranked among the major phenomena of life... All these things are, in their superior forms, simply by-products of excess intellectuality – which I haven’t the honour to possess. In their inferior forms they are of course simply avenues of escape for persons with too poorly proportioned and correlated a perspective to distinguish betwixt the frivolous and the relevant."

Ghostwoods Books has acquired the rights to distribute the Kindle edition of Dark Harvest: Tales of Promethea. This anthology of stories is set in the Dark Harvest RPG world in which Viktor Frankenstein lived to hone his skills at animating the piece-work dead. Eerie, Gothic horror by some well-known game writers as well as novelists like Kate Harrad and Greg Stolze. You can get it on Amazon in both the US and UK. Here is a well written article regarding the historical roots of GoT. It presents the argument that what makes the series stand out is that it's very realistic on the one hand and unpredictable on account of not being based on actual history on the other. This argument is sweetly ironic for the people who did read the books and for whom the show, just like a proper historic show, holds no surprises.

I also feel that a curious subject that hasn't been investigated enough is the historic roots of the cultures with which Dany interacts. They remind me of medieval North Africa or Central Asia, but I'd have loved to hear a more learned opinion on the matter.

I feel that in early medieval societies the distance between people and the government was actually smaller than in present days. Certainly, there were none of the faceless bureaucracies we have to deal with. For better or for worse, someone listened on the other end.

People say Buffy is a strong female character. She is physically strong, all right, but in the end of the day, she always does what she's told and follows archaic rules like a good functionary. I think a much stronger female character would be Bo, who makes a point of living her life the way she chooses and to use her strength when she feels it's justified, not when tradition dictates it.

In D&D, the efficiency of your attack is determined by rolling a die while your defense is a constant number. Did anyone ever try rolling both values? For example, having each combatant make a defense roll in the beginning of each round, so that PCs could exploit openings/ avoid foes when they're the strongest? I never tried it, but it sounds fun.

A quote in honor of the day:

"The old civilizations claimed that they were founded on love or justice. Ours is founded upon hatred. In our world there will be no emotions except fear, rage, triumph, and self-abasement... There will be no loyalty, except loyalty towards the Party. There will be no love, except the love of Big Brother. There will be no laughter, except the laugh of triumph over a defeated enemy. There will be no art, no literature, no science... There will be no curiosity, no enjoyment of the process of life. All competing pleasures will be destroyed. But always — do not forget this, Winston — always there will be the intoxication of power, constantly increasing and constantly growing subtler. Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless. If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping ona h... more »
