Googler Spotlight: Irene Chung
Irene is a Software Engineer in our Mountain View office. We spoke with her about the various products that she’s worked on in her career, her current role on the +Google+ team and why it’s important to “learn as if you were to live forever.”
What were you doing prior to Google and what made you decide to apply?
Before Google, I was a software engineer by day and an aspiring animator by night. I was working in tech coding middleware for embedded systems, but I wanted to be a part of creating something bigger and more visual. I loved the storytelling genius of creative companies like Pixar and the wonder each of their projects created. Just as I completed my character animation degree and was ready to change careers, Google gave me a call and convinced me that tech could be a brilliant medium for positively impacting the world.

Really interesting extension, more here: http://www.magicscroll.net/ScrollTheWeb.html
I agree with the premise that scrolling is reading's worst enemy. Not sure how well this approach works compared to simple pagination, but it's fun to try.

This article is appropriately chilling. And so fascinating that it made me read it twice.

More ways to control what you read and share
Last year we launched volume "sliders" to help you tune the posts in your main stream (http://goo.gl/wrHDD), and since then we've extended this feature across Google+. Today we're excited to roll out three related improvements that give you even more control over what you read and share.
1) Whether it's family members or epic bros, we've all got circles of friends whose content we don't want to miss. By moving a circle's slider all the way to the right, you can now get notified whenever they share something new.
2) For these select circles, we often have news we really want to share -- like getting engaged, or landing a job. In these cases you can now check "Also send email" when sharing, to help make sure your friends see your message.
3) Finally, we all have a chatty... more »

UPS Guy forgets to ring bell. Marks item as delivered. UPS talks to Amazon talks to Sprint talks to Google Voice talks to my five personal computing devices. I hear a series of push notification bells, open door, pickup package, see UPS Guy starting his truck. It's not magic, but it is.

Adjust the volume of "What's hot" in your main stream
#googleplusupdate #whatshot
A few months ago we launched “What's hot”, an always-fresh collection of interesting posts on Google+ (http://goo.gl/6qhVu). We later launched volume "sliders,” letting you decide how much or how little individual circles contribute to your overall stream (http://goo.gl/wrHDD).
Today, and thanks to your feedback, we're bringing these two features together. This way you can control how many "What's hot" posts appear in your main stream on Google+ -- from most, to some, to none at all.
Whenever hot posts do appear in your stream, we'll label them accordingly. And if you're ever in the mood to only see hot posts, you can always click on "What's hot" in the left-hand navigation menu.
We're rolling out t... more »

Finished reading Lunatics today. The book is chock-full of laugh-out-loud Dave Barry gems for the "adult, but not terribly mature" reader, a couple of which I quote below (spoiler alert).
You could tell Nick was not the brightest firefly in the forest. After a few seconds, you could actually see his head jerk back a little bit, from the unexpected impact of having a thought.
Have you ever been in one of those situations where you’re thinking of two different things you could say, but instead of picking one, you say part of each one, so they morph together into a new thing that is not right, kind of like what happened to Jeff Goldblum in The Fly? That’s what happened with me and Donald Trump. I stuck out my hand, and the two things I was thinking of saying were “I’m a big fan” and “This is an honor,” but what came out was “I’m a bonor,” with “bonor” sounding basically like... more »

Hi everyone! I’m an engineer on the Google+ infrastructure team. When +Joseph Smarr made an appearance on Ask Me Anything back in July (http://goo.gl/GbdYv), many of you wanted to hear more about Google+'s technology stack. A few of us engineers decided to write a few posts about this topic and share them with you.
This first one has to do with something we take very seriously on the Google+ team: page render speed. We care a lot about performance at Google, and below you'll find 5 techniques we use to speed things up.
1. We <3 Closure
We like Closure. A lot. We use the Closure library, templates, and compiler to render every element on every page in Google+ -- including the JavaScript that powers these pages. But what really helps us go fast is the following:
- Closure templates can be used in both Java and JavaScript to render pages s... more »

So since I'm posting all about #gplusupdates today, I thought I'd say a bit more about the "What's Hot" feature that we're rolling out now. The goal is for this to be a home for what's interesting and exciting right now on G+. We're approaching this using the classic Google ranking-fu approach, with functions that try to identify a really dynamic notion of people's interest, the presence of good conversations, and so on.
One thing that we're working to avoid is having an echo chamber, where the top posts are perpetually the same group of really famous people. (Sorry, +Robert Scoble. We'll have to limit you. :) We designed our function to balance between showing the top of the top, and finding interesting posts further down the popularity chain which are nonetheless creating a lot of buzz wherever they're seen. We're going to keep working on... more »
