Mining Conditions have Certainly Changed!
I was looking up some material relevant to researching my ancestors from the English industrial Midlands when I came across this report on children being used instead of horses, due to greedy, incompetent mining bosses.

I was gobsmacked to read the following on racial mixing in the USA. I had no idea there was still any form of visible segregation- it shocked me [I'm Australian].

I saaw a terrific photo of a white heron or something taking off. It was too fast down my screen and I can't find it using "Search". Can anyone show me the pic? It was a long thin photo, bird was taking off towards the left and there was not a lot of surface detail- maybe a Japanese or Chinese photographer...

Sorry, I couldn't resist the play on words for the title, heh. ;-)))
We had a huge flock of migrating Mountain Bluebirds visit our neighbor's mountain ash tree during our recent big spring snowstorm. We regularly see robins and waxwings use this tree as a winter food source but this is the first migrating flock of bluebirds to visit and I wonder if it was due to the heavy snow catching them at the right time. After getting 22" last week, more is forecast for today!

Vaccination rates are falling dangerously low in some areas of Australia. Here's 6 common myths (all debunked here http://bit.ly/ZLud6g) that may be driving parents away from vaccination.
Share and help spread the facts!
1. Vaccines cause autism. Wrong.
2. Smallpox and polio have disappeared so there’s no need to vaccinate anymore. Wrong.
3. More vaccinated people get the disease than the unvaccinated. Wrong.
4. My unvaccinated child should be of no concern to your vaccinated one. Wrong.
5. Vaccines contain toxins. Wrong.
6. Vaccines will overwhelm kids’ undeveloped immune systems. Wrong.

Because it's ANZAC Day in Australia
I found these pics on the Australian War Memorial website of the hospital ship [Wanganella] my mother worked on around Borneo & the South China Sea. She probably nursed the guys being hoisted aboard in the LH picture. She never told me very much except the place names like Borneo, Labuan, Morotai, the Celebes, Balikpapan- and I can't find most of these on a map without looking up Google.

STORM DRAIN REFUGEES
The little storm-drain refugees in their new home; the vet said they are about 8 weeks old but only the size of 5 -6 week-old kittens. However, they seem healthy, alert and active, so they should be OK now we have removed their flea load! They are REAL rescue kitties who took about a dozen people to capture them from the network of storm drains going along the streets and between the houses in our suburb! The RSPCA said they had too many kittens to come out and capture them, so we had to do it before the kitties got drowned by sudden rain. The sudden heavy rain occurred about 4 days after we rescued them - lucky kitties!

We had a great time at the Turner Exhibition in Adelaide (mainly from the Tate, London). There were lots of people there so I photographed some of them enjoying the paintings as well. As I left, I photographed the scene outside and "Turnerised" it in Picasa!

What did we find in a stormwater drain?
Some lovely school girls from Walford and several local residents plus ourselves slowly coaxed these tiny babies out from their hideyhole over the past week. Last night the girls caught them & took them home for decisions to be made. Unfortunately, some parentals were not in favour, so we have these two tucked up in our main bathroom at the moment! Name suggestions please! I THINK there's a girl & a boy but they are too scared for me to handle them much yet.

Depression is a hard nut to crack. Different combinations of methods are needed for everyone affected. We also need research on the unpleasantness of anti-depressant effects. I'd like to do that research! Who will fund me?

Several medico-professionals are having me doing "assignments" for them this week, so I combined a 20 minute walk along a fire track (for my crook knee, ordered by the physiotherapist) with finding something beautiful to photograph (for head shrinkage). Here's the shot of Adelaide from above Urrbrae, around midday and one of the haziest times lately. I had to fiddle a bit in Picasa to get some clarity.

Incoming Passengers to Ellis Island, NY
I was trying to track some ancestors of mine who went to the USA from Scotland in the early 20th century. I located the Ellis Island free passenger lists [http://www.ellisisland.org/] and discovered an amazing check-box category on the passenger manifests: Whether a Polygamist. Luckily the McGregor family were classed as "No"!! It's such a short time ago that the country worried about what people did in private! No wonder there is still some suspicion about homosexuality etc. Those old Quaker values are still under there somewhere, mixing the fair with the foul!

Support the National Deposit on Containers Scheme. South Australians have had this scheme for decades and we REALLY see results in the environment. We like it because it works.

I am trying to do some ancestor tracing for +Steve Thomas and myself by consulting records of births, deaths and marriages in England. Sheer luck ordained that most of Steve's relatives lived in an area of the county of Kent where the records have not been transcribed from the original church records. There is no index of names, just a list of different churches where people may have been baptised etc. The years are not indicated and all you get is this list of jpeg images which are all huge and contain very little information per scan. No way am I going through these! What a fiasco!!

An interesting take on the US deportation and immigration issue. This could be helpful in Australia at the moment: http://www.helium.com/partners/iced
They have developed a video game to help young people understand deportation and the immigration laws. I don't think the learning would be restricted by age!

Dying Vet's Fuck You Letter to George Bush and Dick Cheney Needs to Be Read by Every American
To: George W. Bush and Dick Cheney
From: Tomas Young
I write this letter on the 10th anniversary of the Iraq War on behalf of my fellow Iraq War veterans. I write this letter on behalf of the 4,488 soldiers and Marines who died in Iraq. I write this letter on behalf of the hundreds of thousands of veterans who have been wounded and on behalf of those whose wounds, physical and psychological, have destroyed their lives. I am one of those gravely wounded. I was paralyzed in an insurgent ambush in 2004 in Sadr City. My life is coming to an end. I am living under hospice care.
I write this letter on behalf of husbands and wives who have lost spouses, on behalf of children who have lost a parent, on behalf of the fathers and mothers who have lost sons and daughters and on... more »

I was inspired to link this article by Jacob Shelley to my blog as it really summarises the genesis of modern obesity simply as the result of exposure to an obesogenic food environment. That environment is not activity-generating at the same time, so results in weight gain from infancy onwards.

Elephant in the Masai Mara ... how long he may live yet?
I call on CITES... trade in ivory to stop!!!!
How many elephants are dying? If the 38 tons of tusks seized in 2011 represented 10 percent of illegal ivory, it translates to something over 40,000 elephants killed annually — an elephant every 15 minutes!!!!
Policy affecting the conservation decisions at the CITES conference, this should not be.
Read here the article In tribute to elephant of the world http://www.serengeti-wildlife.com/2013/02/18/in-tribute-to-elephant-of-the-world/ please share.

Too hot: Street shots with Fx from the car
It's been too hot for several weeks to go for walks around the neighbourhood during daylight hours, so I've compiled some Fx shots from my Android. If you look carefully you might even spot a drone in our skies! Also, some are not strictly on the street! lol. Blame the weather.

Alert
Are there any fig growers who would like to live in Australia and make a fortune??
Over Christmas, when all the fig trees in backyards were fruiting furiously, this was the sight that greeted me at the grocer's:
Yes, that price tag says $50 per kilogram!! Prime fillet of beef doesn't cost that much!
