Plenty of people are posting about the new Auto-Enhance feature. However, I found most of these posts to fall short: some are entirely too calm and rational and don't evoke any strong emotional response, such as panic or outrage. Others fail to use pictures of cats.
I realized that the only way to remedy this situation is to do it myself. Here is a picture "before auto-enhance" and "after auto-enhance". As you can see, auto-enhance is powerful enough to enrage even the cats.

The Avenue of the Sphinxes is a 2-mile-long road lined with sphinx statues on both sides. It connects the two major temples of Luxor, Luxor and Karnak temples. Only parts of it are currently excavated.

As the Karnak temple was extended over the centuries, the styles have changed (and the budgets too). Compare these two walls: sunken carvings on the left, raised ones on the right. Sunken carving is harder to do but was much preferred by the pharaohs who could afford it: it's much harder to re-carve the likeness of the pharaoh, something his descendants were quite apt to do :)

The obligatory "I was there" photo. The temple complex of Karnak is really vast, the monuments are not small either.

Karnak temple is a huge sprawling complex of many monuments. Many parts are still being restored and are not easy to get into.

What pharaoh does not like to brag about his military prowess? Consequently, this image can be fount in just about every temple: the pharaoh holding his enemies, defeated and bound, in his mighty hand. The symbols surrounding the enemies are names of conquered cities.

To immortalize your achievements as a pharaoh, it's not enough to build huge monuments. The walls are one long records of their glorious reigns: pharaohs standing tall over their people (quite literally too), pharaohs in supplication to the gods, pharaohs hobnobbing with gods as equals...

Luxor, the seat of royal power during the New Kingdom. There, for hundreds of years the pharaohs built up and expanded the temples with awe-inspiring architecture, testament to the glory of gods, and, in no small measure, their own.

One of the tombs in Saqqara belong to two sons of a nobleman. It is likely that they had to finish building the tomb of their father after his death, before building their own next to his.

The toms of Saqqara are not much to look at from the outside, but inside is a different story. The details and the colors are incredible. These walls tell the story of the life of the deceased and list his good deeds and hard labors, so the gods look at him favorably when he comes to the face the last judgement.

Ancient Egypt's porn :)
Actually, this is a carving on the wall of the tomb of the Pharaoh's butcher. Royal butcher was a nobility position and merited a small burial chamber, not far from the final resting place of his liege lord. The walls are decorated with the records of his labors and the duties he performed in the service of the Pharaoh. Breeding cattle was evidently one them.

More street photos, from Cairo to Dahshur and back. Yes, there are sheep grazing in front yards, and donkeys share the road with cars.

These carvings on the walls of Saqqara tombs are over 4000 years old. They still have their original colors.

The Djoser pyramid of Saqqara and the surrounding funeral complex date back to 27th century BCE. His step pyramid was the first pyramid tomb. Its shape is unique: earlier pharaohs were buried in low boxy tombs, latter ones built smooth pyramids (and even latter ones had subterranean vaults). These are the oldest large stone structures still standing, possibly the oldest built by man.

Dahshur of the dead is the magnificent royal necropolis. Dahshur of the living is a small dusty town.

The Serapeum of Saqqara is a catacomb where the Apis Bulls, living manifestations of the god Ptah, were buried for hundreds of years, starting just after Ramesses II. They were buried in huge granite sarcophagi, like these. The older ones are heavier and more elaborate.

... and the pyramids of Dahshur, inside. It's easy to imagine that the time itself stands still here.

Pyramids of Dahshur date back to the 4th dynasty (2600 BCE), they are the oldest preserved pyramids in Egypt. The view from the outside is magnificent...

This is not called "Sea Mushroom" as I would have liked. Just another jellyfish.

Upside-down Jellyfish. No, that's not a description, that's what they are actually called. Most of the time they float near the bottom, tentacles-up. I was curious to see how they move, so I waited. They move the normal way, head-forward (assuming that's the head :) so they turn on the side to move.

Size can be misleading. This tiny frog has enough poison to kill several men...

This is honestly the largest hermit crab I've ever seen! It's about the size of a small lobster.

Another octopus from Portland Aquarium, this one can change colors to match the surface he is on.
