Steve Johnson33,951... At least for this event. The idea here is a simple one; Rules serve a useful purpose but they should be questioned, broken and ignored on occasion.Post photographs that break at least one photography rule (maximum of 3 photograhs) and note which rule they break in the comments. Here are some example rules that can be laid waste to:CompositionThe horizon a third from top or bottomLeft/right mirror symmetry is to be avoidedThe odd number ruleRule of thirdsTechnicalUse of on camera or undiffused flashWideangle for portraits (fortunately this one is becoming a thing of the past)EditingOversharpeningOver-saturating(Just about over-anything really). OtherShooting down at kids, pets or flowers. These are just a few examples off the top of my head -there are many, many more. If you can think of others please add them in the comments. One useful rule: This is all for fun so don't over think it :)Rules are for Fools2012-09-24 07:00:0034

Jacob Dix22,896Mobile PhotographersMobile Photography -- or as I call it  #Mobilography  -- is an artform that, happy to report, has flourished here on Google+. This circle of mobile photographers is not food and cats. It is art, it is creativity, it is beauty and content. Some of the individuals in this circle are film and DSLR photographers as well. The phone camera though is a regular and equally legitimate camera to use in their photography and documentation of their worlds. If you have been notified of this post, you are in the circle.Crowd SourcingI am taking suggestions for people to add to this circle for the future. If you are a mobile photographer, or know a mobile photographer, that isn't in this circle, please mention them here and include a link to a gallery of work. You are not required to share this circle to get into it. I can't stand that gimmick. Share it if you want people to know about our work. #MobilePhotography   #Mobilography   #Mobilographers   #MobilePhotographers   #CircleShare   #SharedCircle  2013-10-25 11:22:57237881459
Thomas Hawk6,164,4602,500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 5 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Thus far, I've shared last name A-Da, Da-Ho, Ho-Mi and Mi-Sh.  Today's , part 5 of 5, represents Sh-Z. I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for part 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpnPart 2-5:  http://goo.gl/3vn0OCPart 3-5:  http://goo.gl/lyVn6fPart 4-5:  http://goo.gl/Tq9HCO*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of "domain errors."  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-05 16:07:314714429109

Jacob Dix20,708Mobile Photographers on G+This is my main circle of mobile photographers on G+. If you are receiving a notification about this post, you are in the circle. Please feel free to share this with others if you feel so inclined (whether limited or public). Some of these people are long time photographers and artists, some are just starting out. Some are amateur and some are professionals. Some post strictly mobile content, some a mix of everything. Some post daily, some sporadicly. What you will get with this circle is variety and to a large extent quality content in your stream. If a mobile photographer yourself, you'll find a great bunch of people to share common interests with.If you are not in the circleIf  you are not in the circle (meaning you have NOT received a notification of  the post), and you feel you should be in it for future circle shares (I'm careful about circle shares, so they don't come often), then you must do a couple things:1. Include a link in the comments below to a gallery of your work. This is required. I will not add just anyone.2. Plus 1 this post. Required.3. Share this so that other mobile photographers might see this. This is OPTIONAL. I make no one share my posts or circles to get in to them, and in fact think such a requirement is a ridiculous practice.4. If you wish to mention a mobile photographer other than yourself in the comments, please make sure that you view the circle and make sure they are NOT  already included. It is up to them to share a link to their work with me. This is also of course optional.Enjoy!2013-02-27 13:44:1020038839

Brunner Nathan1,086The photographers here are all in my personal circles.  The choices are mine and mine alone.  No one asked, begged, or pleaded to belong.  No bribes were offered or accepted.  These are the people that I follow because I appreciate their great quality photography and their interaction.  Most I have met as I help curate several of the photography themes.  There are NO requirements to share this circle.  I would appreciate the people in this circle plus the post, leave a comment, and share the circle as public.  Each profile has been verified by me.  Most have < 10,000 followers (when they were put into the circle).  They each have high quality original photography content.  You won’t find many animated gifs!  I have included myself in the circle and also the landscape page.  Some are new to G+ so please make them feel welcome!!Landscape Photography:  I invite everyone to check out the +Landscape Photography  #LandsacapePhotography theme.  If you want to impress me, that’s the place to do it!!  Post a great landscape that will get my attention.  See the About tab for all the details.I wasn’t included, what do I do?  If you meet the criteria, weren’t included, but think you should be, then leave me a comment.  Maybe I don’t know about you.  There are millions of people on G+ and I don’t know everyone.  However, I’ll be happy to have a look at your work if you will call it to my attention.  Start posting landscapes that get my attention (see above)!!There’s a really great photographerr that you didn’t include.  Please feel free to recommend qualified people.  I discover new people every day and would be happy to look at their work.  Please make sure that the recommended person meets the criteria.  If they don’t then that tells me a lot about you!#Circleshare   #Sharedcircles2012-12-24 08:19:0850022323
Chris Mallory17,861Just 150 PeopleBecause it's saturday, here's a random circle share that consists of most of my favorite people on G+. In here are people of all sorts: people whom I personally enjoy engaging with, people whose content I believe to be interesting, people whom I can call friends, and people that don't know that I exist but make interesting posts anyway. It is certain that I've probably accidentally excluded some people - if so, my apologies! I've also purposefully excluded a handful of people such as real life friends, as well as +Miss M since she doesn't like being in my circles. Thanks for being cool, guys :)2012-12-08 22:45:1915029017

They also have "more photos, less spam." There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).Be sure to get all 14 circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to November 18th for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting November 1st.)I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday2012-11-24 11:45:5532112214

Chris Mallory16,845G+ Survivor Follow-up: One Week LaterAKA, the circle share that is sure to piss everybody offOne week ago yesterday I thought up the idea of "G+ Survivor" - a "game" in which I put all my followers - all 1350 of them - into one circle, and then removed them one by one based on their content (OP: http://goo.gl/wXEiG). The goal was to help me discover new people I had buried in my circles that posted interesting, engaging content. At first it was easy, but as time went on it got considerably harder to eliminate people. Over the past week I've reviewed the posts of over a thousand people, and have come up with, somehow, the top hundred. Before getting into the circle itself, I must say that I learned more about myself in this process than I did about the people in my stream. I learned just what kind of content I found interesting. People that know me know that I am a lover of insects and insect photos, but I eliminated tons of people that post exclusively insect photos and few remain in this circle. Why? Because a photo alone is not engaging. Tell me something about the subject, propose a question, teach me something, share an opinion, get people thinking - these were the things that engaged me the most. Of the hundred people remaining, less than half of them are photographers. It also needs to be said that just because you are not in this circle it does not mean that I don't find your content interesting. Conversely, just because you are in this circle it doesn't mean that your content is interesting. I'm rather surprised, actually, some of the people that made it into this circle while others did not.Another reason you may not be in this circle is if you had any major period of inactivity over the past week. Every night I removed about 30 people simply from inactivity - it doesn't mean that your content was not interesting, just that I wish that you posted more of it.As an aside - if I were playing along, I would have eliminated myself ages ago. I know how (un)interesting I am ;) So I am (obviously) not in this circle. So, for the circle itself! 54 men and 46 women remain in the game. Photography and science are major themes of the remaining members, though neither of those genres holds a majority and there are a handful of remaining players who are involved in neither. Some of you may have remember two weeks ago I posted a circle containing "40 interesting people" (http://goo.gl/xHLwy) - but interestingly, only 20 of those people still remain in this contest. Additionally, I don't even know most of the people in this circle, and 20 people still in the game don't even have me in their circles. It is VERY possible that the winner of this game will have no idea who I am.So, enjoy. 100 interesting people. The game will keep going until 1 remains. Now's the time to bet on a winner ;)2012-10-02 04:23:391004508

Peter Fraterdeus867For your Google+ enjoyment ;-) This circle has people who post about art.I haven't seen all of the posts, or know the people, but they've been curated into the original circle by the person who initially shared the circle. It's a good way to get something of value into your home 'stream'. If you want to follow a particular person, you can add them to your own circles. You can always remove this circle, or edit how much of the content from that circle shows up in your stream...2012-09-17 11:53:54216807
Chris Mallory16,03940 Interesting PeopleI'm bored, so I figured I might as well share this hand-picked circle of people who've made my G+ experience a better one :) Either I really enjoy their posts, or their comments, or their personality, or they are totally insane and would hate me forever if I made a circle without them ;) But whatever the reason, they're a good group of people and probably worth adding in my opinion. And if you feel left out because I excluded you, it's probably because you were #41 and you just barely missed the cut. Or I accidentally missed you. Or because I rather dislike you. Your pick :P But I had to make the cutoff somewhere, and I figured 40 people was a decent size - too much more and it'd be too large and impersonal, I think. 2012-09-16 02:37:434016012

Those mentioned in the comments, give me a link to a mobile photography album of yours and I'll add you.I am attempting to notify most of the new additions to the circle, and also many of those already in the circle. But I can't notify beyond 100, plus I'm not even sure notifications work any longer! #Mobilography   #MobilPhotography  2012-09-13 22:01:55162372339

No one has asked for inclusion and the choice of inclusion was solely my own decision. • Photographers that are inactive were not chosen• Photographers with animated gifs were not chosen• Only photographers sharing a nice selection of their own images were included• Lots of external links = not included• I had to like what I saw; my circle = my choice.• I'm in the circle. My circle, I get to be in it.For anyone sharing this circle, I recommend that you add a few fresh images to your stream to keep your content balanced.◊◊◊2012-08-24 09:00:48265130128165

(This will undoubtedly be the weirdest post I ever make on G+)
+Chris Mallory, the stakes are high now with the Top 10 list being published... competition is about to get fierce!  So I figured that not having participated with photos of hyperparasitism might count against me... not to mention the bitch-slap talk...
I'm not squeamish about much, but I have to admit that the parasitoid larvae in caterpillars just freak me out!  So I did not go looking for examples.  Then I stumbled across this, and imagine my horror to see these lovely little caterpillars parasitized by the most unusual multi-coloured larvae! Yuck!!
So I ate them.

I saw an Akita today who reminded me of my boy, William, and made me ache with missing my dogs ❤.  I haven't been sleeping well for months, so I'm actually going to try to get a good night's sleep tonight.  Sorry to post and run, I just don't have any energy left today.

I know people who have had cats die horrible deaths in this way.  It is totally preventable by following this advice.  And please don't use those remote car starters.

As temperatures fall, can we please think of our furry friends who cant stay warm through the night? Not all are lucky as our pets to find someone who loves them dearly and provides them with safe shelter through the night

Andy Squirrel is very popular with the girl squirrels... I mean, lookit that six-pack!!  Andy maintains his muscular physique with a strenuous daily workout, consisting of lots of climbing, leaping, scaling narrow poles to bird feeders, chin-ups on the perches of said bird feeders, and a host of other moves designed to stay fit and eat large quantities of bird seed at the same time.

Death From Above 1979
Black History Month

Can you remember a time when this city was
A great place for architects and dilettantes
A nice place for midwives and crossing guards
And on, and on...

Hold on children
Your mother and father are leaving

Do you remember a time when this pool was
A great place for waterwings and cannonballs
A nice place for astrologists and blow up dolls
And on, and on...

Hold on children
Your best friend's parents are leaving

(before anyone asks, the song has nothing to do with Black History Month lyrically - it was simply written in Feb.)

I was excited to download the updates for the G+ mobile apps yesterday - finally, search function on iPad!! - but now it appears the the updates (for iOS anyway) broke the apps! I keep getting "failed to fetch posts" and "failed to fetch notifications" errors. Tried signing out and signing back in, had to try that 3 times on each device before I was even signed in, only to get the same errors. Tried deleting and reinstalling, that didn't help either. I hope it is fixed soon...

I went to check on my porch spider guest a couple nights ago, and saw this little fellow clinging to the bricks near the light.  I felt really bad for him, as I would expect that missing one of the large legs would be quite problematic for a grasshopper??  He stayed in the same area for a couple of days, and this morning I noticed that he was gone.

Do you have favourite words?  One of my favourites is redemption.  I like the way it feels in my mouth, I like the way it sounds, and I like its meaning.  I hope that redemption is possible... not in a religious way, but through atonement, and genuine remorse for actions that have harmed others.  I see redemption as coming from within oneself, not something that can be offered externally.  I haven't found it yet, but continue to hope.  May everyone find their own personal redemption.
re·demp·tion [ri-demp-shuhn]
noun
1. an act of redeeming  or the state of being redeemed.
2. deliverance; rescue.
3. Theology . deliverance from sin; salvation.
4. atonement for guilt.
5. repurchase, as of something sold.

Cleverly posing as inanimate blow-up dolls at the busy fair, the alien invaders abducted untold numbers of innocent humans.  With a flash of light and an almost inaudible popping sound, a child who had stopped to poke at this alien disappeared before my eyes!  With a brief nod in the direction of the girl's parents, the alien wiped their memories of their daughter, so that they carried on with their day with no panic or feelings of loss, just a slightly bemused air of having forgotten some little detail...

Oh hi there...
So I took a little break.  I removed myself from all social media for the past few months while dealing with some personal stuff. I'm feeling somewhat better, and will hopefully be around a bit, however I will still be limiting my online time. To those who tried to reach out while I was away, I'm sorry for the lack of response, I had turned all notifications off. Thank you for your concern though, I do appreciate your kindness.

There are moments when, even to the sober eye of Reason, the world of our sad Humanity may assume the semblance of a Hell - but the imagination of man is no Carathis, to explore with impunity its every cavern.  Alas! the grim legion of sepulchral terrors cannot be regarded as altogether fanciful - but, like the Demons in whose company Afrasiab made his voyage down the Oxus, they must sleep, or they will devour us - they must be suffered to slumber, or we perish.

Well, it has taken me a while to work up the courage to even look at this photo, much less post it.
A couple of weeks ago, I was in my back yard, innocently taking photos of squirrels, when the sky went dark and I heard a strange whirring sound, accompanied by a flash of bright light.  I was momentarily blinded and closed my eyes.  When I opened them, the landscape around me was altered, bathed in colours of gold and red, and the terrain was changed.  Some things appeared familiar, such as scraggly trees, but nothing felt right or real.  Then I saw the spaceship, floating silently above.  Near me, I saw... him... or it... walking up some rocky stairs from a pit in the ground that hadn't been there before.  Feeling for my phone, I was able to take one photo of the frighteningly thin green form, somewhat humanoid, but... not.  Very tall, naked, an odd shade of green, with a bony round headatop a ... more »

I asked, my voice shaking but sounding strangely loud against the whisper that was the alien's.  For alien I had determined it to be, nothing else made any sense.  "Food," it responded.  I forced myself to stay still, to not betray my fear.  "What do you eat?" I asked, "I can give you fruit, bread, whatever you need."  Inside, I was fervently hoping that I wasn't the meal the alien had in mind.  "You," it responded.
I tried to scream, tried to run, but found that I no longer had any voice, and no control over my body.  I was held in place even though the alien had not moved toward me at all, had not touched me.  But a pain unlike anything I had ever experienced exploded in my head, a pressure that made me certain my skull was going to explode.  I don't know how long it lasted, it could have been a second or an eternity, but it stopped as suddenly as it had begun.  The alien looked at me and seemed to be concentrating, and I was blissfully enveloped in a feeling of peace and contentment.  "I'm sorry," it whispered, "we are starving on our planet.  Our crops of humans are failing and they can no longer supply us with the energy we require.  What you are feeling now doesn't work for our humans any more, it doesn't recharge them as it should.  You will be fine."
I wanted to ask what its plan was, if more aliens would be arriving to feed on our mental energy, or if they would be taking humans back to their planet, and what it meant by 'crops of humans' but I was still unable to speak.
With another flash of blinding light, the alien was gone, back to its ship, and when I opened my eyes, everything was back to normal.
For now.

Disheveled.  Disorganized. Time-challenged.  Sleep-deprived.  Slightly depraved.  Something's gotta give, and after a lot of thought, I've decided that it has to be G+, for a while anyway.  I'm taking a break, which may be a week, or may be much longer, I'll see how it goes.
I'm sorry if I have missed any comments lately, between unreliable notifications and the complete fuck-up of the G+ iOS apps with the most recent updates.
If anyone is interested, I'll still be posting iPhone pics to Instagram (startergirl) - it's much quicker, which suits me just now ;-).

Crokinole (pron. KROH-ki-nohl) is a game that was played a lot in my household.  We played on an old board that my dad had crafted at the age of 7!  (When I visit him at Thanksgiving, I'll take photos of it too.)  The game is a simple one: On a large round playing surface, players take turns flicking their pieces towards the center from the outer edge.  Your piece must touch at least one of your opponents' pieces on the way (unless there are  none on the board).  Getting one of your pieces to land in the center hole scores 20 points, and fewer points are awarded if your piece remains on the board (15, 10 or 5 points, depending how close to the center your piece is located).  The difficulty of getting your piece into the center hole is increased by the dastardly pegs screwed into the board in a circle around the hole.  Players also try to shoot their opponents' pieces off the board, whilehaving ... more »

The game was invented in Southwestern Ontario in the mid-1800s.  Some say it's origin is in the Old Order Mennonite community where it was called Knipsbrett, showing it's link to the German game Knipps-brat, but other historians dispute that, saying the clearest link is to a Lutheran man in Perth County named Eckhardt Wettlaufer. Wetlaufer is credited with crafting the earliest-known Crokinole board in 1876. There are written references to the game dating back to the 1860s, also in Perth County, Ontario.
Crokinole is said to be similar to games played in other parts of the world: Carroms (southeast Asia), Shove ha-penny, Squails and Shovelboard (precurser to Shuffleboard) (UK), and other ancient games from Egypt and Asia.
The board photographed here is one I gave to my husband, who had never heard of the game when we first met, but quickly grew to love it as much as my family.

Sometimes
I want to drain the world of its colour
suck the blood from its veins
lick the lusty earth from my lips
and swallow
and swallow
and swallow
Until I feel alive

I Drove All Night
"I had to escape
The city was sticky and cruel
Maybe I should have called you first
But I was dying to get to you
I was dreaming while I drove
The long straight road ahead, uh, huh

Could taste your sweet kisses
Your arms open wide
This fever for you is just burning me up inside"

"Whirlwind"

These leaves were stuck to a porch screen during a recent storm.

I'm still trying to learn the Laminar app. For this photo taken on the iPhone 4 and processed on the new iPad, I selected Laminar's radial blur effect at 100%, followed by the splatter texture at 50%.

Then I slightly bumped the saturation in iPhoto.

Sometimes I just feel despair for the human race.  I don't understand the sadistic pleasure some take in making others' lives miserable.
For Amanda Todd, I'm so sorry that people were so cruel to you, and made you feel that this world had nothing to offer you.  RIP dear girl.

I kind of forgot that G+ forces you to crop profile photos... this is the original, which I prefer.  Oh well.
