50K Philosophers of Mind!

Actually passed this milestone yesterday, but I wanted to stop and thank everyone for the great discussions. This is a very exciting time for Philosophy, Neurology, Science, and all the other facets of human experience that contribute to our understanding of understanding.

Let's keep this rolling folks. Now is a good time to stop and review Wikipedia's article on Philosophy of Mind:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophy_of_mind

Which should be viewed as just a starting point for further investigation ^_^

Thanks again!

Hi, I’m a robot, and I’m here to take your job. But, don't worry, "every job lost will be replaced many times over with emerging new industries.", says +Thomas Frey.

Never mind that there have been no "emerging new industries" creating millions of new jobs since 2008 -- they will start emerging any day now. Also never mind that everything on his list of new jobs is stuff that would have to be paid for by government or charity, and there are no signs of increases in hiring in either one. Never mind that any "emerging new industries" will evolve in a world of robots and AI and jobs will probably require much higher levels of skill, education, intelligence, and creativity.

>In September 1989, GE Chairman Jack Welch flew to Bangalore, India for a breakfast meeting with an Indian delegation that included Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi. The purpose of his trip was to sell airplane engines and medical equipment to India, but the meeting took an interesting twist along the way.

>Rather than buying what GE has to sell, the Prime Minister Gandhi proposed that GE buy software from India. After looking at the amazingly low labor costs, Welch decided instead to outsource portions of its business starting with Bangalore’s first call center. This short meeting led to an outsourcing revolution that would dramatically transform both the Indian and U.S. economies.

Amazon Is Building A Biosphere For Its Employees

>While the form of the building will be visually reminiscent of a greenhouse or conservatory, plant material will be selected for its ability to co-exist in a microclimate that also suits people. To encourage growth and maintain the health of the plants, the building’s interior will include high bay spaces on five floors totaling approximately 65,000 SF and capable of accommodating mature trees. The exterior enclosure will be highly transparent and be composed primarily of multiple layers of glass supported by a metal framework.

>In addition to a variety of workplace environments, the facility will incorporate dining, meeting and lounge spaces, as well as a variety of botanical zones modeled on montane ecologies found around the globe.

Super Science Circle - May 2013 Edition

Need more science in your Google+? Well, here's all the science you can handle! Enjoy my latest, heavily curated edition of the Super Science Circle.

Please share this circle... for Science!

For the uninitiated, I maintain a circle of 450+ people who are active on Google+ and regularly post on Google+. In this circle you'll find scientists, journalists, astronauts, educators, and science enthusiasts. By importing this circle into your own circles, you'll immediately gain a vibrant and fascinating feed of amazing science stories.

I recognize that it might be too much science, so I suggest you create a brand new temporary circle and evaluate the people in the circle. Only transfer the keepers to your permanent circles. Then, when I update the circle next month, rinse and repeat.

As many of you have probably heard by now, Cosmos is coming back to television.  FOX has just announced that, sometime in 2014, Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey, will hit the airwaves.  This time, the series will be hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson, working with original creators Ann Druyan and Steven Soter with Seth MacFarlane of Family Guy fame producing.  While MacFarlane may seem like an odd fit, he is actually a personal friend of Ann Druyan, a childhood fan of Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, and an advocate of space travel.  He also personally provided the funding to have 800 boxes of Sagan's notes and letters preserved in the Library of Congress.  It was through MacFarlane's clout with FOX Network that Druyan was able to meet the network heads and get the series approved.

The aim of the show, much like the original series, will be to introduce a general audience to the wonders ofscie... more »

>For a year now Google employees and celebrities have been allowed to wear Glass. But when I ran into a Google employee wearing it in public and had a conversation with her, the interaction was screamingly uncomfortable.
