Hello Folks from a new member! .. I'm a pop-in, pop-out person on G+. I mostly shoot in and around Alaska (a sample here,) but periodically travel, following my camera where it leads me. So, I'm a Pacific Northwest guy with Nature and landscape photos from all over ... This image is a rain squall over Kenai Lake, on the Kenai Peninsula of South Central Alaska.

Sacred Sunday? Why Sunday is more sacred than any other day seems arbitrary to me. What each of us deems sacred is a personal matter. Embrace your sacredness daily, whatever it is and wherever you find it. Don't forget to breathe ...

Okay ... You might have seen this before, but in case you haven't, check it out. Maybe it's old news, maybe not. Especially those of us (like me) that post images, watch this youtube and then share it with your family and friends. It’s about how images from smart phones can be used to find you or information about and your family. I looked for this on snopes.com and didn't find it. But I figure, at least in this case, that NBC is a reasonably reliable source. You decide. If you think it's appropriate, pass this URL to people you know who post images from their cell or smart phones.
Watch the video and then take whatever precautions you think appropriate and inform your children or grandchildren about security issues.

Took a few shots of the sun shaded in low clouds over Eklutna Flats this afternoon. Trees covered in hoar frost. Last two are the same shot: first still has color information, the last is Black and White. What do you think?

Buck Shreck posted an image of a red pole finch so I thought I'd post some, too. We haven't seen them around here recently so these are not shots from the present time.

CELEBRATE THE MEANINGFUL.
Here we are, going into one of the most insightful and reflective times of the year. For northern hemisphere people, in the midst of winter and the diminishing hours of the sun’s passage from East to West, we anticipate solstice and the many spiritual and meaningful celebrations of the season. Regardless of nation, culture, religion or belief system, for most people it’s an introspective time. We reflect on our fortunes and struggles: having again endured, overcome and survived life’s indignities, insults and set-backs: having become aware of our growth, gratitude and gifts bestowed by the passing year: our coming to terms with gains and losses in the midst of economic and political chaos and instability: our absorbing the new and unraveling threads woven into and pulled from our intimate blanket of family and friends: and our gathering together in the breaking of bread... more »

Someone said it was "Mid-air Monday." I guess any "M" will do ... it's Monday.
Here are a couple of eagles. It has been chilly here lately, along with a fair amount of snow. For wild critters the concern is staying warm and avoiding starvation. At the VFW near here, people put out old, freezer burned, salmon for the big birds. It's a great photo op. The first eagle was hungry enough that he wanted a bite of salmon before finding a perch. Stay warm out there!

Hello Folks,
Nippy today. Just above zero in Eagle River this morning. <4.1 F - http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/hdfForecast?query=eagle+river> And much below zero F a bit north of here. I recall a neighbor's question this weekend as we were removing snow from our driveways for the third time: "So, what d'ya think of winter now?" I didn't say so then, but this is what I thought:
My friend, as an Alaskan accustomed to such inclemency, the complaints of "winter" are left to cheechakos and other "outside" newcomers. Winter is what it is regardless what we think about it. However, as most people know, I do not shun argument. Winter is fraught with its pleasures and pains and those who discuss each at every opportunity as if they could do something about it. In that regard, as with most things, I have my own view and will take a... more »

There's a rumor going around about "Sign Sunday." Here's my contribution.
"At Your Own Risk Road" is on the Elliot Hiway north of Fairbanks in the interior of Alaska. Looking forward to seeing what other signs show up ...

I have a rock. It is sacred and I carry it within. I worked hard for it.
I hike the trails of Alaska's Chugach Mountains and valleys, including those of the early Iditarod that follow Eagle River's water eastward toward the mother glacier. The trails are sometimes rocky, sometimes smooth, sometimes straight and sometimes curved. They rise and fall with the contours of the mountains and roughly parallel the river's rapids, through the varied narrows and widths of the valley. In restful moments, in sun or snow, on the river's bank or at the edge of a beaver's pond, I sit and breathe tje silence in the midst of the river's voice, and those of the birds and black spruce breezes. The rock settles my spine, centers my balance, quiets my thinking and brings me peace.
I have a rock. No one owns it.
Fellow veterans, thank you for your service and... more »

Fish Friday, Fungus Friday, Fall Friday, Female Friday, Flora Friday, Fauna Friday, Fogeddaboudet Friday ... I'm sure that there are other "F's" out there one could ponder ... Here are a few Alaskan "eFF"ish things for your Veteran's Day review ...

It's Veteran's Day, Armistice Day, and/or Remembrance Day. Whatever your nation. Wherever you live. Take a moment. Reflect on the price paid by unknown men and women, alone, in far away places. Freedom is not free.
Short video: The cost of freedom is buried in the ground. Mother Earth will swallow you. Lay your body down.
Cost of Freedom - Medium.m4v
I put this together from my own photos and posted it on Youtube with a limited distribution. It's veteran's day: a day in my mind that has a touch of the sacred in it. It's not about one particular veteran, it's about all of us ... especially those who paid the ultimate price, and those who, and whose families, continue to pay a price beyond compensation. They are owed beyond our ability to pay. Nevertheless, the debt is there and the nation has promised help, support and compensation to and for our veterans.... more »

Enjoy ...
