“A bad guy is a bad guy. I don’t care what color he is. When you go to war, if you know the enemy, the enemy dresses in red and you dress in blue, you shoot at red,” he said. “You shoot the enemy. You try to identify the enemy. And the enemy right now, the overwhelming majority of people coming in are people of color or people of Hispanic origin.”

Not actually said by Trump, this time.

I have to make some time at some point to tell the story of the first time I performed a Cesarean section too - as in, where I led the surgery, not where I was assisting during the surgery (because obstetrics and gynaecology was by far my least favourite rotation during internship but I still worked my ass off... nobody likes being sprayed in the face with amniotic fluid). Oh, and the story of the patient in labour who escaped from hospital and had to be brought back by the police for causing a general disturbance in the surrounding neighbourhood.... oh man, Obs and Gynae was the worst rotation but it had the best stories!

Not for Trump. Remember, most traditional Republican voters honestly believe that they are not racist, and they must also believe that their candidates are not racist - because only the Bad Guys are racists.

By tying Trump explicitly to the alt-right, this makes it harder to support him as a candidate.

Also, that's not what the Streisand Effect is about.

Her most important move in the speech was to contrast Trump’s behavior with that of past Republican presidents and nominees. Clinton favorably cited Bob Dole’s admonition against racists during the 1996 Republican National Convention, praised George W. Bush for his outreach to Muslim Americans after 9/11, and highlighted John McCain for his pushback against racist conspiracy theories during the 2008 presidential election.

As analysis, Clinton’s argument about Trump’s distance from the rest of the GOP is wrong. At various points in their campaigns, those Republicans gave their winks and nods to the most toxic elements in their party. And broadly, the Republican Party has long appealed to the white racial resentment and hostility that now fuels the Trump campaign in explicit form.

As strategy, however, Clinton’s approach is shrewd.

https://www.facebook.com/HassHilft/photos/a.1500186596948227.1073741828.1496616280638592/1603398846627001/

https://www.erzbistum-muenchen.de/StGertrudMuenchen/Page070914.aspx

http://sachsen-anhalt-live.mdr.de/Event/veto-das-politik-blog-von-mdr-sachsen-anhalt/323264097

I did another bicycle trip on Tuesday, since that was the last day this week when temperatures were merely "warm" instead of "absurdly hot" - choosing my usual route to the Edersee.

Unfortunately, about five km before I reached the Edersee one of my spokes broke - and that meant I had to cycle for 30 km with a broken spoke until I reached the next train station (which, for Germany, counts as "middle of nowhere"), so I only managed a total distance of 80 km. And annoyingly the repair shop is currently extremely busy, so I will likely only get my bicycle back on September 2nd.

This ruling potentially has big implications for the structure of scientific labor, as most of the "graduate students" who are not low-paid teaching assistants are low-paid laboratory technicians.

Once again I have done the math, and it appears that the Trump Campaign spent $423,109.76 on hats in July, bringing up the total to $2,160,549.23!

While I wouldn't read the comments (because most of the people in them haven't a clue about the religion - or likely any of the older religions), the article itself is really good and does a fairly good job at showing how the non-extremist branches of Islam are getting back to their roots.

As the article points out, the Islam that Muhammad created had women in a more active role; they were even allowed to own land during his time and for sometime after, and become the heads of their households, and more.

A quote from the article that really stood out to show the separation between real Islam and the bullshit Daesh pedals though: “Why are women and children being killed in Syria?

An obvious reason for Trump's candidacy - besides feeding his bottomless ego - is that he can use the office of the Presidency to feed money into his businesses. In fact, he has already stated that he will continue to run his businesses even if elected.

And to those who believe that a government should be run like a business (I don't) - the way Trump runs businesses into the ground should provide a very strong incentive to keep him from running the US government.

They are not even pretending that they aren't fascists any more.

'After Trump said goodnight, supporters moved to the barricade and engaged with reporters. Some just stood there, glaring. In the crowd, the talk was how unfairly Trump had been treated. Somebody said the media was full of “perverts and retards,” while a man in a “Trump That Bitch” T-shirt said “all reporters need lobotomies.” His friend suggested that President Trump might sign an executive order to that effect, but Mr. “Trump That Bitch” couldn’t see that happening—a President Trump, that is. “You know there’s no way they’ll let him get in the White House,” he said.'

“You know there’s no way they’ll let him get in the White House,” he said.'___

I don't think a major war between Russia and NATO is very likely, or even slightly likely - still, having both American and Russian forces engage in military operations so close to each other (both in Syria and the Ukraine) without cooperation or even coordination is very worrying.

Now, the shot-down jet incident between Turkey and Russia did not lead to a war between the two either... but let's try to avoid another incident like that, shall we?

What are your thoughts on this?

Sorrows about the next year

In May this year, the Russian president urged military commanders to hurry the launch of missile attack warning satellites. The reason he reportedly gave them was: If Clinton wins the US elections in November, we will have a world war next year, and Russia should be ready to defend itself. Regardless of how realistic or unrealistic this is, it is the Russian perception of the likely next US president.

Looking at it from the opposite angle:

(Quoted from her own campaign site.)
"Stand up to Vladimir Putin. Hillary has gone toe-to-toe with Putin before, and she’ll do it again. She’ll stand shoulder to shoulder with our European allies and push back on and deter Russian aggression in Europe and beyond, and increase the costs to Putin for his actions."

Now, there is a problem with this... and that is that US allies don't face any Russian aggression in Europe. Ukraine does, sure, but that is an ally of the United States only because after the aggression, the United States decided to be one.

Let that sink in for a moment. "We will stand with our allies, and we choose our allies such that we get to stand against Russia." If you were a Russian, how would that sound to you?

How would it sound to Americans if they heard, say, Putin say "We will stand by our allies", and then choose to ally themselves with, say, Mexico, holding common military exercise with the Mexicans on their soil? Wouldn't you assume that this is an act of only thinly-veiled  aggression against your nation? And wouldn't you prepare to defend your interests in Mexico?

Then there is this recent piece...
http://www.reuters.com/article/us-mideast-crisis-usa-aircraft-idUSKCN10U1ON

"A U.S.-led coalition sent aircraft into northeastern Syria on Thursday in a "very unusual" move to protect American special operation ground forces from attacks by Syrian government jets, a Pentagon official said on Friday."

There have been recent clashes between pro-government forces in Syria and Kurdish forces, and the Syrian government sent air support to their people. If the "coalition", that is, the US in Syria, go actually as far as  shooting down Syrian warplanes over Syrian soil, then there's a certain country that will of course feel that it has to "stand shoulder to shoulder with their allies and push back on and deter aggression in Syria and beyond".

You can easily see where this kind of talk leads us all.

According to some anthropologist models, major war (in contrast to minor clashes between single societies) in a given collection of societies happens about every four generations, plus or minus one, because after four generations, people (and most importantly, those people who are leaders) forget just how terrible such a war really is.

It certainly looks like our peaceful time is almost up once again.___I don't think a major war between Russia and NATO is very likely, or even slightly likely - still, having both American and Russian forces engage in military operations so close to each other (both in Syria and the Ukraine) without cooperation or even coordination is very worrying.

Speaking before another largely-white audience in a town whose population is 93 percent white, Trump said, “And at the end of four years, I guarantee you that I will get over 95 percent of the African-American vote. I promise you. Because I will produce.”___#AudioDistortions
