SciFi Author: Lacerant Plainer3,752Its been some time since I shared from this account. These are my top friends... why share? Because if you want to meet awesome people they are in this circle! Some of the people I have met by serendipity, and a lot thanks to +Ted Ewen, +Mz Maau, +Jamez Frondeskias and people I circled randomly. But the experience has been wonderful. You will noticed a marked tilt towards Science Fiction, Geekery and Randomness, but there are some people who take awesome Pictures like +Charles Strebor and +Jacob Dix. Others who have a unique take on things like +Jack Stanley and +Yoon-Mi Kim.When making circles, my endeavor has been to have the best quality people here who share and engage. So if you're new here, add these people. If you have been some time in G+, you know what I'm talking about. This is my way of hat tipping to the wonderful people here - Thank you for being a wonderful friend and supporter!! #topcircles    #lacerantplainer  +Lacerant Plainer 2012-07-17 12:29:2018327218
Craig Froehle4,629467 Plussers Well Worth FollowingSome curated recommendations to make your Tuesday a bit more interesting. I kept this circle largely free of celebrities, pages, and organizations, so these should (nearly) all be actual people. Enjoy!By the way, topic-wise, it's a bit of a potpourri, but with emphasis on technology, science, progressive politics, skepticism, and other fascinating things.Note that I don't always agree with everyone in this circle, so don't take this as an endorsement of their ideas...merely that they tend to be thoughtful when presenting them.2012-07-03 14:29:094671718

Rob Gordon25,215Entrepreneurs, Self-Employed, & Small Business Owners.  As promised, here is my "supplemental" circle of entrepreneurs here on Google+. This is an addition to the original set of circles with the same name that I published in mid-May that you can find at this link: http://goo.gl/P0Irg.These circles include the self employed, small business owners, independent contractors, startup company founders and people here who seem to have an entrepreneurial mindset. This smaller circle will be put as a link on that post so that anyone who wants to "entrepreneuralize" their stream will have a quick way to do that. This circle is a mixed bag of all sorts of different kinds of entrepreneurs - some well established, some just getting going. If I missed you this time, please let me know. I republish this periodically.  Please consider adding this to your circle of entrepreneurs. I also want to take this as an opportunity to plug the Startup Chautauqua event we are planning for this Saturday, June 30th at 9AM PDT, 12PM EDT, 4:00PM GMT. This will be a "multi-hangout" event where we will have one public meeting, and then people can visit hangouts hosted by other entrepreneurs and small business owners. It should be fun and will give us all a chance to get to know each other better.  Read more about it here: http://goo.gl/mCPFT.   Please let us know if you would like to join us - either as one of the hangout hosts or as a participant. All are welcome to attend and we hope you will be able to make it.2012-06-26 17:20:5110034717

Armando Lioss9,721“Active Engagers Shared Circle” 2.1In this shared circle you will find some interesting people to add to your circles, all of these GPlussers currently are actively engaging with my posts as well as with other GPlussers’ posts, so you can be sure they are getting involved in the G+ community. The main purpose of this series of Shared Circles is to expose new GPlussers, but you may find even first generation ones in them, in order to give everybody an opportunity this version include only GPlussers that have not been included in my “Active Engagers Shared Circle” 2.0, if you are looking for a more comprehensive list of active engagers you may want to review this list as well: https://plus.google.com/u/0/111635150542674847021/posts/KVJLKb25SatIf you do not wish to be included in my future shared circles, please let me know with a comment to this post. I will remove you from this and any future shared circle I create, but I will keep you in my G+ circles.Furthermore, with each version I try to include new active engagers that are looking to meet other GPlussers to interact with, but I understand the old users may not have as much interest to meet new users and won’t circle them back, so I will prefer including users that really want to interact with new users. For TIPS TO GET PEOPLE TO CIRCLE YOU you may want to check:https://plus.google.com/u/0/111635150542674847021/posts/Q6c3ikBhdT3Thank you for your help making Google Plus adventure and exhilarating one… #SharedCirecles #CircleShare #ActiveUsers #Engagers #Commenters #TopCircles PS: I don’t necessarily share or identify the views of these GPlussers, in fact with some of them we have completely antagonistic points of view and dissimilar interests…2012-04-07 17:11:19500141516

Armando Lioss7,406How to Get People to Circle YouIf you don’t want to get bored, jump to the tips and skip my blah blah blah…This weekend has being snowing and a bit cold for my taste, so I spent it social networking most of it… I had a chance to chat with a bunch of friends in FB and find out that several of them have tried Google Plus and gave up, because they couldn’t make friends… the word was “it is boring”, “it is dead”, “nobody friends you back for weeks”, “I have sent invitations to 100’s and just a couple friend me back”, …Well, been in FB myself for a while I can understand the culture, but the first thing one needs to be aware of is that this is not FB, here we have circles and we don’t send invitations, we circle the people that we find interesting, the goal is not to have a lot of friends, but to find people with the same interests, those we find amusing, entertaining, we can learn from or connect with. Yes, ideally we want to connect too and that is why it is not that important to have a lot of friends, but get the ones that share our interests so we can interact with them, but not all the people in your circles will circle you back. As you add people to your circle your stream will run faster and you don’t want to flood your stream with posts that you don’t care about, so make sure you circle the right people. The following are some pointers to get people to circle you back, most of it based on my own preferences, what I have learned from others in Google Plus and the errors I have seen chatting with my FB friends.TIPS TO GET PEOPLE TO CIRCLE YOU. First thing, go to your profile and fill out the “About” tab, it is very important that you try to fill this out as much as possible, you may want to avoid personal information like your address and phone number, after all it is the Internet. Every single one of my FB friends that complained about not getting “friends” got this page blank. A lot of people before circling you back will review this page and won’t circle you if it is blank. At least you should fill the Introduction, Bragging rights (something that catch the eye, brag about yourself), and Places lived. Also, it is very important to change the default photo, as beginner I would recommend to put one of your best pictures where the other Google Plus users can see your face, then later change it with your pet picture or whatever you want to have as your avatar. It is very important when you start that people feel like is getting to know you so they can feel confident to circle you back… don’t put that picture your friends shoot last time you fall asleep at that party… leave it for later, when enough people have circled you back..Don’t hide your information, there is nothing wrong with being new to Google Plus and don’t having too many people in your circles or not too many people that circled you back. A lot of people, like me, won’t be really inclined to circle back somebody that hides this information, it could be a troll or a spammer. Besides, looking to the people you have in your circle and who circle you back may help to get somebody to circle you back, it has happened to me when I do not find enough posts from a user that interest me, I check their circle and if I find people that I know as interesting, I assume there is potential for this person to become interesting as well. Before you start adding people to your circle, fill your stream with great stuff. The first think I do when people circle me is to check their streams to find out what they post, if I don’t find enough stuff that interests me, I don’t circle back. Chances are, this will be the only time the people you circle will take a look to your stream, if they don’t circle you back, so don’t miss the chance to introduce yourself with great posts. Most of my FB friends didn’t have anything worth to show or even they had their streams bl2012-03-05 12:32:54391261716

The Kite patch is a new way to combat mosquitos - and mosquito borne illnesses such as malaria.  It looks like this Indiegogo campaign is for a commercial venture - I'd have been much happier with a non-profit, but they do have giving the patches to families in Uganda as a key component of their crowd-funding pitch.

Here's an awesomely excellent sounding crowdfunding campaign:

Black Girls CODE - Summer of CODE 2013 - The Remix
Help fund the next generation of tech and expose 2,000+ girls to coding during our expanded CODE summer program.

The reasons this is an awesome idea are many. Development studies show that across a whole range of metrics for social wellbeing, the education and uplifting of women is just about the best thing you can do to improve social conditions. Everyone is going on about how important coding skills are, but we know that these skills are not being evenly distributed.  Time and again we are hearing about problems of sexism and racism in the tech industry.  And most generally, every kid should have the opportunity to pursue and learn things that interest them, and we need to do better about making sure all kids in this country have opportunities to learn coding...a... more »

App Camp for Girls was launched 3 days ago at the Apple WWDC. It's already raised more than its initial goal, $58,000, but we should fund it to the moon. It's an incredibly worthwhile idea.

Here's some of their blurb:

"App Camp for Girls wants to address the gender imbalance among software developers by giving girls the chance to learn how to build apps, to be inspired by women instructors, and to get exposure to software development as a career. Our goal is to grow our non-profit organization into a national force, with programs in multiple cities, helping thousands of girls.

We are launching this summer in Portland, Oregon. This summer, we'll be holding two sessions with girls 12-14 so that we can build and refine our curriculum. With experience and an established program, we'll move forward over the coming year with plans to expand the camp for... more »

App Camp for Girls was launched 3 days ago at the Apple WWDC. It's already raised more than its initial goal, $58,000, but we should fund it to the moon. It's an incredibly worthwhile idea.

With experience and an established program, we'll move forward over the coming year with plans to expand the camp for Summer 2014 to accommodate more girls and a bigger age group, and to build the organization to reach beyond Portland to other cities."

After the recent charts showing the persistence of sexism in Silicon Valley, and all the crazy stories of the past year around gender issues in the tech community there can be little doubt of the need for correctives.

But... there are many other reasons as well. Time and again, studies have shown that the education of women is the single best thing that one can do to lift all sorts of social metrics around poverty, disease, illiteracy, etc. What lifts women up, lifts whole countries up. These studies are of development activities in the underdeveloped world, but I think there issues apply here just as well. And the USA has been drifting toward a sort of weird uneven development that is unfortunate.

As long as this camp has a positive attitude toward other things in general, and is not some billionaire bootcamp, where girls go to learn how to be the next/female Zuckerberg or Gates, then I am strongly supportive.

Travis' approach is more stringent than mine, but read this for pointers on how to do better time management during your working life...

GTD Best Practices

This is my own collection of best practices that I have developed and adapted from the GTD (Getting Things Done) methodology. For background on GTD, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Getting_Things_Done

The thing I have found most important about using GTD is to be flexible. I have created my own implementation of GTD, and I'm not afraid to bend the rules when necessary. I also try not to get bogged down in process, because GTD should make things easier, not more difficult.

Information Management

I used to carry a pen and paper to all of my meetings. I would take notes, and then file those papers in a folder for the relevant project. But I had a hard time locating those notes months or years later when I needed them. This, and working at Google, taught me that if data is not searchable, it's not very useful.

Now, I always attend meetings with my laptop. I have instant access to all of my information that way. I take meeting notes directly into an e-mail which I send to myself. Its searchable, permanent, universally accessible (anywhere, any device), and minimizes clutter. Hard copy documents get scanned and attached to e-mail with relevant (searchable) subject lines.

All of the documents that I used to have in my hardcopy reference files are now in soft copy, in a handful of folders on Google Drive (folders organized by project). They're searchable, and I don't have to spend extensive time categorizing them by topic.

My workflow is in a web browser (Chrome) where I have Gmail and Google Calendar open at all times.

E-mail Management

Inbox rules:
1. My inbox should generally be empty.
2. No e-mail should go to or remain in my inbox unless I need to take action on it.

Incoming e-mail is either:
1. Automatically filtered to a "mailing list" folder for later reading (once a day or less);
2. Read and archived immediately;
3. Deleted (spam, announcements, etc.);
4. Acted upon (responded to or forwarded to someone who can address the issue).

If an e-mail needs more attention than I can give it at that time, I create a calendar entry or a task list entry to act on it later.

I only use a few e-mail folders (labels): Inbox, Starred (for follow-up), Drafts, Sent, Read/All, and Mailing Lists. I do not have individual folders for projects. The sorting took too much time, and I can put my fingers on whatever e-mail I need using search queries.

Automate e-mail using filters and Priority Inbox to filter out as much junk as possible. Unsubscribe to mailing lists that are not read.

Read the Mailing Lists folder as infrequently as possible. Choose “select all”, scan through the subject lines, and uncheck anything that looks interesting, then press delete (or archive) to remove the non-interesting messages.

Put Data Where It Is Best Accessed

My computer (a MacBook Pro 13") has no data on it. Only a web browser. I don't have to worry about back-ups. This also makes using a chromebook or tablet much easier, although I'm by far most comfortable using a laptop.

Move everything to the cloud (use Google Docs, online photo storage like Picasa, SmugMug, or Flickr, etc.).

Minimize junk: Do a clean-out and donate all the clutter to charity (there are a number of really good websites on minimalism that discuss this).

Go paperless: All paper records should be scanned and shredded.

Task Management

I have a calendar for recurring events, meetings, and when I need to block off time to work on a project.

I keep a task list in Google (https://mail.google.com/mail/help/tasks/) and I use Android Tasks (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ch.teamtasks.tasks.paid) to sync task lists with my Android phone. I have two main lists: Personal and Work. Additional lists can be added for special projects, etc.

Task syntax:
Each task item starts with a "(1)", "(2)", or "(3)" to indicate priority.
Urgent tasks are preceded by an asterisk: "(*1)" to promote the priority.
I add a "w" before the number if I am waiting on someone else to take action ["(w1)", "(w2)", or "(w3)"] to demote the priority.
I add an "r" after the number ["(1r)" or "(w2r)", etc.] if it is a recurring task, to remind me to reset the task for the next iteration.

Because Google Tasks sorts alphabetically in the Google Calendar view, this filters the highest priority tasks that I need to take action on to the top of the task list.

Interesting if you are into Pinterest, but actually even more interesting for thinking about metrics, data analysis, algorithms for image analysis, etc.

In the wake of PRISM, I can't help thinking about the use of techniques like these on, say, images of demonstrations, strikes, college campuses, etc.

At once an extraordinary counter history of radical praxis and a call to arms in the age of financial crisis and the resurgence of the streets, The Spectacle of Disintegration recalls the hidden journeys taken in the attempt to leave the twentieth century, and plots an exit from the twenty first.

The default title for this thing is a bit of teaser, but the truth is actually pretty grim.  Some kid cuts school and makes a boosting post on Facebook about how he's going to be a famous rapper, but includes a comparison to the Boston bombing. And ends up in jail, without bail, on terrorism charges.  No specific threat, no weapons, no bomb making material. And clearly, really clearly, nothing beyond normal teenage stuff - wanting to be a famous rapper, thinking the government is shit. Even with attempts to cut and paste things together to make him look worse, there still doesn't seem to be ANYTHING there to warrant ANYTHING.  Maybe a detention for cutting school. 20 years in prison, though?

In Wired’s binary California Ideology, it’s either ‘bad regulation’ or no regulation at all. The article contains gems like: “Profit is a much more powerful driver for quality than regulatory compliance.” Contrast this with the extraordinarily good work of Shareable magazine, in trying to make municipal regulations sharing-friendly and even sharing-constructive.

Here is a neo-libertarian, netarchical take, excerpted from ARUN SUNDARARAJAN, that tells us: always trust the intentions of business and their capacity to self-regulate:

I love this idea - a very creative way of pushing back against A&F's comments and image.  There are issues about sensitivity to the homeless that should be considered, but overall this is really creative and likely to be fairly effective - certainly much more so than, say, a demonstration outside some A&F flagship store, which is usually what ends up happening in situations like this.

Charles Simic has a superb piece on the NRA in the New York Times Review of Books.  Among other things...

"Any discussion about the influence of the NRA and other gun lobbies ought to make it clear that their chief mission is to drum up business for the 1,200 gun makers in this country. Guns, as even half-wits ought to realize, are manufactured not by freedom-loving patriots, but by people for whom private profit outweighs public good. That is why they are against the background checks that 90 percent of Americans say they want. Preventing criminals and mentally ill people from buying guns would cut into their earnings."

Oh man... I bet every parent could add one or two things to this list, but I'm glad that most of them are new to me!!

Shared from a good friend of mine because she knows I have two boys.  This is unfortunately fairly accurate.

RAISING BOYS - 24 POINTS TO PONDER

The following came from an anonymous Mother in Austin, Texas...

Things I've learned from my Boys (honest and not kidding):

1. A king size waterbed holds enough water to fill a 2000 sq. ft. house 4 inches deep.

2. If you spray hair spray on dust bunnies and run over them with roller blades, they can ignite.

3. A 3-year old Boy's voice is louder than 200 adults in a crowded restaurant.

4. If you hook a dog leash over a ceiling fan, the motor is not strong enough to rotate a 42 pound Boy wearing Batman underwear and a Superman cape. It is strong enough, however, if tied to a paint can, to spread paint on all four walls of a 20 x 20 ft. room.

The name can be spelled three ways:
UNIX
This commercial trademark has been owned by Bell Labs/AT&T, The Santa Cruz Operation, Novell Inc., Unix International, and the X/Open Consortium, now known as The Open Group. It refers to any computer operating system package that is derived from the code base developed at Bell Labs beginning in 1969.
The Bell Labs documentation was very careful to always spell UNIX in all capital letters, and small caps whereever possible.

The name pokes fun at a mainframe operating system called MULTICS. The authors of UNIX thought MULTICS was far too complicated for what it does. Excessive complexity is considered a sign of poor software design, and indicates poor software design management.

unix
This is a generic name for all UNIX-like operating systems, including Linux. The last patent on unix expired in Septmber 1989, and it became legal to freely distribute a unix that was not derived from UNIX. On that date, unix (the conceptual design and its associated technological cullture) ceased to be the intellectual property of whatever corporation owned the UNIX code base, and became part of the human cultural heritage.
Unix
Capitalize the word “unix” if you use it at the beginning of a sentence.
Related names

Linux
This trademark belongs to Linus Torvalds. It refers to an operating system kernel which he designed to be usable with GNU. (He wanted to call it “Freeix,” but the people who ran his university's FTP server talked him out of that. It sounded too much like “freaks.” Linux was to be a temporary name until someone came up with something better. That was in 1991.)
Any operating system package or “distribution” which uses the Linux OS kernel.
The cultural phenomenon of freeware successfully competing with proprietary software in commercial, academic, NGO, and consumer environments.
I believe Linux (the whole phenomenon) is fairly close to what the authors of UNIX intended UNIX to become.

BSD
Berkeley Software Distribution or Berkeley Standard Distribution. AT&T UNIX developed slowly in the 1970s and 1980s. They made the code base available to universities, and some schools derived their own operating system distributions from it instead of waiting for AT&T to get its act together. The UC Berkeley unix became more popular with technical users than UNIX. Sun Microsystems' SunOS (renamed Solaris 1) was derived mostly from BSD. Their Solaris 2 OS was an attempt to recombine UNIX and BSD. Today there are several “free” BSD products for PC-compatible computers. Yahoo runs on FreeBSD.
GNU
This acronym stands for “GNU's Not UNIX." The GNU project set out to replace UNIX with a freely distributable system with similar functions. They couldn't afford to do it all at once, so they replaced parts of UNIX one by one, beginning with the C/C++ compiler. GNU products are generally regarded as the highest quality freeware available. Most Linux distributions would be more respectfully called GNU distributions.
