These two gulls weren't messing around. They were fighting quite aggressively for control of the building ledge, which was not only the closest perch to -- but also afforded the best view of -- the fish vendor's cart about 20 meters away.

When there are 20+ folks shooting the same scene as you it can be tough to get a nice wideangle shot of the scene without later having to become well-acquainted with the context-aware fill and clone stamp tools in Photoshop. Alternatively, you can wait until everyone clears out to get the shot. The third alternative is not OK in my book: run in front of everyone else to get the shot first. I've always had relatively good luck in this respect with group shoots and photowalks. After 18 months of taking part in multi-person photo outings I have only had to use my signature sarcastic utterance twice: "Hey, thanks for giving us all the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the clone stamp tool! Appreciate it!" :)

I think it was supposed to be a 15-minute stop, but it must have turned out to be an hour by the time all was said and done. I'm glad no one was in any huge hurry -- this was a really scenic spot.

A few dozen of us descended upon this beautiful spot one morning this past February to dodge incoming tides and bloodthirsty sandflies in hopes of capturing a great sunrise. Mission accomplished. I've been seeing lots of great Milford Sound shots posted by folks that were there that morning. How can you not love low clouds clinging to lush mountains?

I need to spend more time at Henry Cowell SP. I love that it's been sunny and warm(ish) the past few times I've been there, but I would also love to shoot there on a misty, foggy morning.

It's March Madness, and I'm not a big follower of college basketball, so pretty much the only brackets I care about are the kind used to make pretty pitchas :)

This one's from today's #SantaCruz2013 photowalk. We spent the morning walking around Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park in Felton, and ended the day with a sunset shoot at Panther Beach. In between, we photographed a 100-year old steam engine AND 30+ of us crammed ourselves effortlessly into a Greek restaurant for lunch. There was laughter, there were tears (from laughter), there were several #TheBonocore poses and tons of +SmugMug schwag* given away.

c r e p u s c u l a r | lake wanaka, new zealand

There's a cool solitary tree on the shore of Lake Wanaka. It's not in this shot, so no need to go all squinty trying to find it :) The tree is what brought us to the lake, but I thought this dawn light reflected in the lake was too awesome to pass up. I'm typically a sunset shooter, but I'm starting to think I need to shift my schedule from nightowl to earlybird....

By the way, if you are in a squinting mood, there are two different sets of rowers (scullers?) on the lake. Other than the coxswain's megaphone-assisted barking of commands, it was very quiet and serene :)

This picturesque spot is in Bendemeer Estates in the Lake Hayes/Arrowtown/Queenstown area of New Zealand. The scenery here is absolutely breathtaking: rolling golden Tuscan-like hills giving way to tall jagged peaks. And on this evening the whole scene was topped off by one of the most spectacular sunsets I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing. Standing there you just get lost in the unending beauty that stretches as far as the eye can see. I've used a lot of superlatives in my description, but I stil feel that I'm surely understating what sweet eye candy this place is. On top of all this, add the company some awesome people (+Michael Tristram, +Elle Bruce, +Darcy Conn & +Scott Kublin) and you have the recipe for a perfect evening of photographic fun.

Here's another from the #santacruz2012 photowalk organized by +Barry Blanchard, +Karen Hutton +Cameron Siguenza, +Ed Sweeney and +Peter Adams. This was one of my very last (usable) shots of the day. And what a day it was: indescribably fun and satisfying and still the single most productive day for me ever in terms of percentage (and also just sheer number) of usable photos. This is why I'm still uploading photos from it in late Jan :))

I'm heading to New Zealand this coming Sunday for a photo workshop. It's a dream trip and I've been looking forward to it for months! I'll be in NZ for 11 days total, 5 of which are for the workshop. I've left the last part of my trip pretty much unplanned. Gotta play life by ear every now and then....

third rock from the sunset | pomponio state beach

If you're familiar with my photography, what I'm about to tell you will blow your mind. Ready? OK, this image is not HDR. That's right, I bought some GND filters, and -- since I like to accessorize -- a new lens to go with them :)

This is my first image using the new filters. I got them last Wednesday and wasn't really able to use them until yesterday evening. The wait was worth it, though. The conditions were awesome and the sunset was, to quote a friend who was shooting with me, "...the color of rainbow sherbet...."

I like my new filters. A lot.

The Blue Hour | Kirby Cove

I had such a great time at the #SliceOfTimeSF photo event this past weekend. Huge thanks to +Nathan Wirth and +Athena Carey for organizing the event, to +Joe Azure and +Steve-Maxx landeros for hosting the Kirby Cove outing on Sunday morning, and to all the participants who attended and made the event so fun. The weather outlook for Sunday morning looked really iffy throughout the weekend, but in the end the sky and cloud conditions turned out to be absolutely perfect. I'm amazed that with 30+ of us gathered on that small beach we all managed to stay out of each other's way.

After I got off of work last Thursday I quickly made my way out to the coast to try to catch what seemed to be shaping up to be a really killer sunset. I had plans to get farther south than this spot (San Gregorio), but there road to the coast is one lane in each direction...and I got stuck behind a big slow truck. Once I hit the coast road, I tried to hurry to get as far south as I could, but by the time I hit San Gregorio I could see the sun was quickly taking anosed... more »

This is "The Crack" in Davenport, also unofficially known as "Barry's Crack." It was my first time at this spot, so I didn't realize -- until +Elizabeth Hahn mentioned it earlier this week -- that sometimes the crack is filled with sand. Grabbed a few (hundred) shots at Eden Park in Cincinnati a few weeks ago. It's a really nice spot perched at the top of a big hill with a nice overlook onto the Ohio River and the...I guess you'd call it the north Kentucky shore :) I have a few pics from the overlook, which I'll eventually post.

This is Union Terminal in Cincinnati, Ohio. I shot here earlier this year, but I got the chance to return to the spot last week, this time equipped with my tripod AND a much wider-angle camera/lens setup. I'm really happy with the results.

This is my second Circle Share & is an update of my first Circle Share from 2 months ago. (if you were notified, you are in the circle)

This circle was agony to get down to 99 people. I really wish I could have added 50 more, but people are more likely to add a circle if there are 100 or less in the circle.

I took the previous circle & removed people who were no longer active or who were no longer interactive. I filled the empty slots with a focus on my top 99 people G+ said were relevant & those folks who regularly engage with me.

This wasn't necessarily the hardest spot to get to (actually it was quite easy if you knew where to pull off), but it was a bit hidden from the direction of the adjacent highway you would need to be traveling to get to it. I found quite a few places along this part of Interstate 80 to shoot from, but I usually spotted them from the opposite direction, so lots of doubling back for me on this day.

Sometimes I just drive until I get lost, then I get out and start snapping photos of anything interesting I find. Sure, it's much less risky to do this in this era of GPS navigation, but it's no less rewarding. Try it some time, but don't forget your map or navigation device so you can get home to upload and share the images you've captured.
