Earth under water

Let's face the facts.  There's no question that sea level is rising and that it will continue rising for the foreseeable future.  The only questions are:  1)  How fast? and 2) By how much?

Conservative estimates show that the sea level will rise by 12 to 16 feet by 2100.  Then, 16 feet per century over the next 300 years or more.

Can we afford to assume the "best case scenario"?  Or is it imperative that we prepare for rises as high as 60 feet per century over the next 300+ years?

Honestly, I don't think that cutting fossil fuels is the solution.  It might slow the process, but it's not going to stop it.  What do we do?  Build levies and dams that will affect the migration of many sea animals?  Simply evacuate to higher land?  Build floating cities that will rise along with the sea level?  Should weeven attemp... more »

Astatine - Rare element ideal for treating certain types of cancer

Professor Andreyev, who moved to York from the University of the West of Scotland last year, said: "Astatine is of particular interest because its isotopes are interesting candidates for the creation of radiopharmaceuticals for cancer treatment by targeted alpha therapy."

Rigid walls with acoustic invisibility

"You can’t have a conversation across a rigid wall—all the sound impinging on it is reflected"

That's debatable depending on how they define "rigid".  However, they do have an interesting method of amplifying and transmitting the sound via membrane covered holes in the wall.

I have to wonder about the applications.  Eavesdropping?  In wall speakers?

Flying spheres enigma

These strange spheres have been witnessed and recorded by astronauts, military and civilian pilots, scientists aboard MIR, and the general public.  Yes, this was broadcast on UFO.TV and, needless to say, it's a UFO documentary.  However, it is very professionally done.  No buzz words, sensationalism, or "tin hat" theories.  This documentary shows video footage of these strange spheres from a number of sources' civilian and otherwise.  These are not faked or fabricated.  Please watch with an open mind.

Tiankeng
Earth's big holes

[Re-post due to deletion of video]

The tiankeng are gigantic holes in the Earth with subterranean forests and networks of cave systems.  Most of which are found in a relatively small area of China.  These tiankeng were largely unexplored by humans until about 10 years ago.  This documentary shows an expedition into one of them.

The 4th major empire of the ancient world

The Hittites

There seems to be some controversy as to whether or not the biblical Hittites and the Hittites described in this documentary are the same people.

Wikipedia offers this information:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblical_Hittites#The_case_for_identity

There is no biblical reference on the UNESCO site that describes the Hittite capital city; Hattusha.

http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/377/

Hittites.info seems to explicitly state that the "two" Hittites are actually the same people.

http://www.hittites.info/history.aspx

Though Hattusha was excavated in the early 1900's, much of the texts found there were not deciphered until much more recently.  Some of the information in this documentary might be slightly incorrect, but I still think... more »

What if Earth's moon was closer . . . or further away?

Though I'm not sure that I agree with the theory of how our moon was formed, this still makes for an interesting documentary.  It shows the effects that the moon would have on Earth if it were closer or further away.

However, the most interesting and important part of the documentary, from my perspective, is roughly the last 9 minutes.  I've known there was frozen water on the moon for a while now.  That's a necessary resource for building a permanent moon base.  Like the narrator, who is a scientist, I feel that a moon base is of the utmost importance for the future of space exploration.

In addition, we now have the technology to install a thin layer of solar cells on the lunar surface.  The energy that they collect can then be transferred to Earth; thus, providing significant powerfor t... more »

Arctic core samples make us question how long it's been frozen

After analyzing core samples taken from Russia's Lake El'gygytgyn, researchers have found that the Arctic region was much warmer for about 1.4 million years; starting 3.6 million years ago.  There was definitive evidence of vegetation in the form of tree pollen.  This is a significant find because, according to others' research, the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere weren't much higher during that period than they are today.

"The sediment core also reveals that even during the first major "cold snap" to show up in the record 3.3 million years ago, temperatures in the western Arctic were similar to recent averages of the past 12,000 years. "Most importantly, conditions were not 'glacial,' raising new questions as to the timing of the first appearance of ices... more »

The Uncanny Valley

Masahiro Mori, a roboticist, coined the term in a 1970 paper.

"A robot that's too human-like can veer into unsettling territory, tripping the same psychological alarms associated with a dead or unhealthy human."

If, in fact, this Uncanny Valley does exist, it certainly does not fit Mori's description.

The article names a few examples:

1)  CB2 (http://media.npr.org/assets/img/2012/11/14/85805742-robot-japan-osaka-0f4ba5a076126474bf5d4944e7651032b43d2c2b-s6-c10.jpg)

While a bit alien in appearance, it hardly seems fear inducing.

2)  KOBIAN (http://inapcache.boston.com/universal/site_graphics/blogs/bigpicture/robot_08_12/r19_19450411.jpg)

KOBIAN looks rather silly to me.  In fact, some of its expressions (from other pictures) remind me of Robin Williams.

What would happen if all the dark matter went away ?
Or, how to destroy a galaxy : a beginner's guide

Dark matter probably makes up about 90% of the mass of most galaxies. We can't see it, but it's the best explanation we have for why galaxies rotate so quickly without flying apart. So what would happen if it just vanished ? This simulation attempts to find out. When the counter turns red, the dark matter has gone.

Giant outbursts from binary star system

"Circinus X-1 is an X-ray binary (or two-star system) where one of the companion stars is a high-density, compact neutron star (a neutron star is an extremely dense and compact remnant of an exploded star and only 20km in diameter.) The two stars orbit each other every 16.5 days in an elliptical orbit. When the two stars are at their closest the gravity of the dense neutron star pulls material from the companion star. A powerful jet of material then blasts out from the system."

Forbidden archeology

Sadly, science does have a dark side.  What happens when several archeological digs at the same site provide indisputable evidence that contradicts the paradigm of mainstream science?  Well, the facts get buried.  Artifacts get lost.  Journals go unpublished.  However, do these horrific acts make the fact that hominids found their way to Central America at least 200,000 years ago any less true?  That's a minimum of 180,000 years before the accepted time of human, modern hominids, discovery of that region.

Pay little mind that this documentary was broadcast on UFOTV.  This is a true scientific documentary where archeologists, geologists and other scientists discuss the facts of this discovery.  You won't find any sensationalism or people with weird hairdos providing pseudo-facts here.  This is the real deal.

Is Titan a place like home?

Rocky landscape, vast plains of frozen water, methane rivers, cold lava flows made from a mixture of water and ammonia.  That hardly seems to describe Earth as we know it today.  However, is Titan a living example of what Earth was like 4 billion years ago?  Will it slowly evolve into a more life supporting and, perhaps, human friendly globe?  Watch as a mission that nearly failed brings light to these questions.

Limiting what a given circle can see

I've been reluctant to let some of my relatives know about G+ because there are a lot of posts that I wouldn't want them to see.

Do I limit my scope for some posts?  Sure.  I post some things to a specific circle.  However, I post most things to Extended Circles.

I think G+ needs to add a feature to circles where you can limit what people in those circles can see.  I'd prefer that some people, mainly relatives, only see my public posts.  All others blocked from sight unless I share it specifically with their circle.

I had loads of apps installed on the, now dead, PC and tons of documents, images, etc. to restore.

The good thing is that I have Norton Ghost now (yeah, I know Win7 has backup capability, but I've learned not to depend on MS for everything) and I'll be doing a backup image as soon as everything is back intact. No more manual rebuilds for me. I'm doing a full backup... more »
