Delete Cyberbullying
I don't do too many PSAs on this account, but every now and then, I feel so moved to do so.
Cyberbullying is very real, and it is probably (in this day and age) more damaging to the emotional psyche of victims to this form of abuse than getting a black eye on the school yard.
In my travels around the Google+ Sphere, I have spoken with people who have been cyberstalked and cyberbullied, and I think it should really stop.
I signed this petition and also wrote an essay about the harmful effects this type of abuse can have on a person as I have been at the business end of a cyberbully who believed lowering my feelings of worth were a way to elevate their own.
Without amazing people in my life, and they (and you) know who you are, it may have really put me in a lower place than I was, so I urge anyone who would like to see... more »

Rock The Shot
Here is a quick (less than 30 second) video on how I was able to create the +Selfy Sunday Project image for this session.
There was no official theme or sub-theme for the week, so I went with a lighting portrait in an achromatic scale. There were three lights total - a snoot at my back, a strobe with an umbrella, and a strobe with a silver reflector.
My goal is to start sharing the process - whether it is just the make-up (or pre-shot stuff), or the process (post work flow) for some of these portraits I am putting together - as I wind down my official 52 self portraiture project, I find this chronology for my work in the way of tuts and videos to be helpful in ingraining the work into my memory and I also hope it will help all of you out there too!

A Sketcher Darkly
So, as I head down the home stretch of this project, heck yeah, I want to experiment a bit more and I want to break away from some of the norms to include a lot of things I am learning in school and also things I read about in my MOOC and other web-related studies. In thinking about the term I am almost through with, it became clear that mobile technologies are really going to begin evolving a lot of things including journalism, filmmaking, art (in general), and even photography (more specifically).

A Day In The Life Of A 366 Photographer
It has taken me 6 months to write about, but I am finally prepared to speak to my time as a 366 photographer.
I started in January, the first to be exact of 2012, that I embarked on a journey to push myself to the limits and force myself to learn or evolve as an artist and photographer in my craft, and better myself for the future.
I will admit that it was tough some days and easy on others. Sometimes it is difficult to force creativity when you are tapped out of ideas, but the challenge and the fulfillment came from pushing passed that feeling and referencing concepts I had only dreamt of fulfilling. I don't think that I would have attempted steel wool burning, macro, studio lighting, exceptional iPhoneography, shooting through manual settings and pretty much everything else!

Recoloring The Masters | Mona Lisa
Color Theory Course
This week, in class, we had to choose between Mona Lisa, Water Lilies or The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum to rework with new colors and adding additional imagery to create something new.
For me, I chose the Mona Lisa. Of course, I reworked the skin tones and eyes (who knew she could have such lovely baby blues), punched a bit of a burgundy in the hair color, popped out the blue intensity, and finished it all up with a star trail image layer to give the sky additional color and texture.
Here's hoping for a decent grade heehee ;)

My Secret Garden
I think we all have a place we go to, whether physical or emotional, that is our safe haven. A place where whatever we have going on can't touch. It doesn't necessarily have to be a place you go to in order to escape bad things, stressful things or cumbersome predicaments; it can also be a place to go to recharge, rejuvenate, and renew yourself and your well-being.
That special place is in my arts - it is in what I can craft with my hands, head and heart. It is my secret garden.
For Week 46 out of 52 (holy shiz! Only 6 more weeks!), I merged a few of my favorite elements - eyes, catchlights and an achromatic color scale, and I explore being in #aplaceofinfinitepossibilities and #mysecretgarden.

Week 22: Head In The Clouds
Another week, another staged portrait shot composed through the use of artificial lighting.
This week, I wanted to work with a high fashion look by using my Smashbox Cosmetics, Urban Decay and Napoleon shadows, Benefit primers and highlighters, Bobby brown liquid liners, extensions and appliances, and eventually bring it into PS to enhance the overall artsy design.
For me, this was an arduous process that sapped a lot of my energy in the pre-shoot set-up rather than the modeling or camera work. When it came time for the real meat and potatoes, I knew I had to get the positions, lighting, and other technical components done before I was too exhausted to finish it all up.

Trust In ME as I Trust In YOU
Trust is one of those interesting things.
It has similar principles and properties to faith, but it should be easier, shouldn't it? We all know trust can be there and we know it exists - it is quantifiable and can be measured and has value. Why, if we all want to trust and be trusted, do we make it so difficult to do? Betray each other's confidences over silly or stupid things, or just because we think we know better or can get away with it.
I can admit that I've had my trust stepped on a few times in my life, but I am always willing to have another go at it. Maybe not with the same people because once you lose my trust, it is certainly not something easily recaptured, but I do not shy away from trusting again (as I have in the past) because all that causes is loneliness for me, and my rationale is, "why should I be... more »

Though She May Be Weary, Her Gaze Still Wanders Towards The Infinite Possibilities
This week, I have spent most of my free time (other than the holiday) learning about and practicing my computer design. I am not going to lie, my head has been pounding, my eyes are tired, and I am nearly punch drunk goofy because there is little room left in my head at this moment for anything except school and work.
When I finally got home tonight and finished up one of my 3 projects due by Sunday, I decided to go for my self portrait image for the week. At first, I tried a few clicks in front of the window that I wasn't thrilled with, and then when I was making a few adjustments, I saw the light from the window in my eye. Eureka! I had my "eye-dea"!

Would You MOOC?
Nine times out of ten, I am going to post something photography or art related on social media because that is what I am known for, but today I was listening to Dan Pink talk about motivations or more specifically what motivates people.
It comes down to Autonomy, Mastery, and Contribution.
We want to work freely, become masterful at things, and then we want to share and contribute to a greater goal.
This makes complete sense if you look at most of us who use social media as a tool for learning, growing and exploring. We pick a passion - be it art, music, applied mathematics, video games, or general tech/innovations.
I have a full time job in education, but my passion and one day dream, is to be able to switch from full time in education to full time artist with a consulting gig in education. I wouldn't even mind a healthy b... more »

Each day offers us the potential for so many things - trials, victories, mistakes, and defeats - and it is up to us to handle them and make choices that will reflect the type of soul we have inside us.
I made a decision this week and I am happy with it, though the path it went down was not so pleasing; yet, at the end of the day, I know my choice was sound and just for me. That is what counts.

Afterglow

This week, I began to realize that I have 9 weeks left for this self-portraiture endeavor and I am pretty stoked to have another personal achievement under my belt. All-in-all, this project has really taught me about the importance of lighting in portraiture, and I hope to only improve in the months and years ahead.
From strobes to flashes to reflectors to diffusers, each has an important role to play in my toolbox and I anticipate this will to change anytime soon.
So, I give you an image with lighting and eyes full of wonderment as I look on to infinite possibilities...

Today was promotion day for my munchkin to the next level of her black belt journey...
She worked very hard during the last year respecting the code and living up to its standards with focus and discipline.
She can remember 12 forms, but I still have to remind her to clean her room...
