I enjoyed reading this piece, which provides a new perspective on focus. For me, the bit I thought was the best advice regarding work was this:

"Don’t get attached... Attachment leads to fear. Fear leads to worry. Worry leads to chaos."

Re-engineering the Economy In the Age Of Networked Selfs

A quarter-of-a-century ago, I used to get into heated arguments (during class) with my economics professors in graduate school. I argued that it was simply ridiculous to buy into the theory of perfect information, efficiency, and rational decision making in economic markets. As I was trained in the hard sciences, I knew when I was being sold a bill of goods. In real-world markets, people simply did not act in the ways economists modeled them to act.

Now, a new theory is emerging that is unraveling a different old-school economic view of market participants: that they selfishly exploit market inefficiencies for the primary purpose of profit.

From the article:

"Social media will promote a new kind of participatory economy, in which competition goes hand in hand with cooperation,” believesHelbing.... more »

Paper artist Sarah Trumbauer illustrates and creates original papercuts inspired by fairy tales. Equipped with only a few simple tools (acid-free paper and an X-Acto knife), the artist uses her own designs to meticulously carve out intricate patterns and silhouettes of enchanting scenes that are both familiar and new. The whimsical hand-cut cast of characters include young girls interacting with nature and its inhabiting creatures.
In addition to her charming vignettes and delightful scenes, Trumbauer's collection of papercuts also incorporates inspiring quotes framed in floral patterns. Her precision in executing such fine typography simply by cutting into paper is to be commended. If you're interested in owning one of her original papercuts or perhaps a reproduced print of her work, the artist's work is currently available for purchase through her Etsy shop.... more »

Gluten Be Gone: Synthetic Biology Solution for Celiac Disease

What is Celiac Disease? Celiac disease or gluten allergy comes from eating wheat, rye or barley. Most common in people of N. European descent, the symptoms include diarrhea, weight loss and an increased risk of cancer.

Why is gluten allergenic? Gluten contains an unusual protein called alpha gliadin, which has many repeats of the amino acids Proline and Glutamine (PQ motifs) that are resistant to the digestive enzymes in our stomach. In some people, these PQ-rich fragments cause severe allergy and inflammation.

Clinical trials: A natural bacterial enzyme from Sphingomonas capsulata that can break down PQ motifs is in clinical trials as an Oral Enzyme Therapeutic. But it works poorly in the acidic compartment of our stomach, and attempts to engineer it to become acidt... more »

Some web development tips, from a former Digg employee. Using a framework to protecting yourself against CSRF attacks, GET requests should always be idempotent, sprites, gzip, ImageOptim, reducing the number of requests, CDNs are a pain, dynamic Javascript loading not worth the effort, unified notification system, DOM order, keeping resource strings out of Javascript, hitting Enter on keyboard to submit forms, don't rely on hover or scrolling, read jQuery's source code, jQuery plug-ins are a hit or miss, users have a tendency to double-click, testing Javascript is hard, sending JSON encoded HTML is easier, == is bad, DOM is expensive, external scripts will sometimes include some document.writes which cause horrible issues, Mobile WebKit have a 300ms delay on firing click events after a tap, staging environment, don't show counts on pagination, cool URIs don’t change, all template engines sucko... more »

A really interesting talk about impostor syndrome.

"The impostor syndrome, sometimes called impostor phenomenon or fraud syndrome, is a psychological phenomenon in which people are unable to internalize their accomplishments"

"Despite external evidence of their competence, those with the syndrome remain convinced that they are frauds and do not deserve the success they have achieved. Proof of success is dismissed as luck, timing, or as a result of deceiving others into thinking they are more intelligent and competent than they believe themselves to be."

OAuth  May Be Dead

Eran Hammer, lead author and editor for the OAuth working group, resigned, and has written up a summary of how bad the specification has become.

At the core of the problem is the strong and unbridgeable conflict between the web and the enterprise worlds. The OAuth working group at the IETF started with strong web presence. But as the work dragged on (and on) past its first year, those web folks left along with every member of the original 1.0 community. The group that was left was largely all enterprise

Amy Johnson

There's a lot of discussion at the moment about Amelia Earhart, but she wasn't the only pioneering female aviator of her day to die in mysterious circumstances.

Step forward Amy Johnson, a woman from my own home town of Hull, England, who in 1930 was the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia.

She also set several other notable flying records, but in 1941 crashed into the River Thames while on a secret wartime mission; her body was never recovered, and there are claims that she was shot down by an  RAF aircraft.

Bioengineers have made an artificial jellyfish using silicone and muscle cells from a rat’s heart. The synthetic creature, dubbed a medusoid, looks like a flower with eight petals. When placed in an electric field, it pulses and swims exactly like its living counterpart.

“Morphologically, we’ve built a jellyfish. Functionally, we’ve built a jellyfish. Genetically, this thing is a rat,” says Kit Parker, a biophysicist at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who led the work. [...]

The team now plans to build a medusoid using human heart cells. The researchers have filed a patent to use their design, or something similar, as a platform for testing drugs. “You’ve got a heart drug?” says Parker. “You let me put it on my jellyfish, and I’ll tell you if it can improve the pumping.”
