Dressed for Success
I just couldn't bring myself to post this as a monochrome image. There's just too much color happening here. From the #MakerFaire in San Mateo, California with +Scott Loftesness today.

I need a member of Nikon Professional Services to verify that I'm a full-time photographer, which is now the case. Any NPS members out there willing to vouch for me?

Mad Scientist
This weekend's #MakerFaire with +Scott Loftesness was even more crowded than last year, which was far more crowded than 2011. At this rate, it's hard to shoot in many spots. Indoors it's almost impossible to walk, let alone compose good photos.. Outdoors, you can still find some great kids.

TWiP Special: It's All About the Gear: Does Size Matter?
Had to post that title before +Frederick Van Johnson decides on the real one. :-) This is the pilot for a new #thisweekinphoto series of gear reviews. Because it's new, we need viewer/listener feedback: format, length and (most of all) what gear-related issues would you like us to review and discuss?
In this pilot episode, we discuss the shift to smaller & mirrorless cameras, looking specifically at the Olympus OM-D E-M5 and the Sony NEX-7 as examples.

Girls in Havana Convertible
+Scott Loftesness posted his shot Blonde (http://goo.gl/fjTL0), so I just had to bring you not just one but three blondes and a lovely brunette. These four young women from Britain were in Havana, obviously enjoying themselves.

It's the dream car of my teenage years. Nothing quite like it for someone who grew up in the '50s and '60s. Oh, there are the Corvettes, but I was a Ford/Shelby kind of guy.

2013 San Rafael "May Madness" Classic Cars
Spent an hour with +Christopher Bradley shooting some great cars in San Rafael this afternoon. It's virtually impossible to get full-car shots in such an environment. Too many people. Distracting background. So we focused on details, logos, hood ornaments, etc.

Long Lines at the Museum
The lobby of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is essentially monochrome on its own. It allows visitors to study the light, shadow and textures without the distraction of color. Although this is a monochrome image, the original color version didn't look much different. The wall on the left is alternating rough and polished granite. The opposite walls are painted flat white. I'm standing at the top of flight of stairs that pretty much vanishes into nothing, although the bottom isn't as dark as I've made it here.

SFMOMA is Closing
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is closing for the next three years for major renovations and expansion (http://goo.gl/C9jIf). If you can get there before they shut the doors on June 3, 2013, go see the Garry Winogrand exhibit (http://goo.gl/rWifb). Terrific b&w images of 1960s-80s America.
Hey, if you're going to Google I/O or the massive photowalk on May 14 (http://goo.gl/8JTjW), why not visit SFMOMA the same day?

Main Hall, 16st Station, Oakland
I did manage to get in a few shots before I dropped the 14-24mm f/2.8. This one's a 5-exposure HDR merged and processed (with a lot of distortion correction) in Photoshop with a little help from Lightroom. As cool as this room looks, the stairs are fake (plywood & Linoleum) as are some of the wall trimmings and the bar. All built by a film crew a few years ago. Still, it's an interesting location.

Colorful Past
Yesterday, a handful of us from the Marin Photo Club spent two hours shooting at the circa 1912 abandoned 16th St railroad station in Oakland, California. This utility room confirmed my new hypothesis: If it doesn't smell bad, you're in the wrong place.

Unfortunate Selfy
This was the shot my Nikon D800E snapped of me as it hit the ground, hard. I think the camera survived, but the 14-24mm f/8 is badly damaged. Glass appears okay, but the zoom is jammed and the integrated lens hood is destroyed. :-(

Raúl Cañibano
I strongly agree with +Scott Loftesness' recommendation of this small book of b&w images by Havana's Raúl Cañibano.. Raúl is a marvelous photographer. We were luck y to have spent a week with him in January. The book costs only $15.60 from Amazon -- a great bargain in photo books.

Shooting the Dunes at Sunrise
With all the images you see of the gorgeous Mesquite Dunes at Death Valley, you don't really get an idea of what it looks like when you turn the camera in the other direction. Here I'm atop a medium-sized dune shooting down at part of the group that went to Death Valley last month with +Jeff Sullivan and +Lori Hibbett. It's all about getting into position for sunrise, avoiding footprints and climbing through the sand.

Cosmopolitans for Beyoncé and Jay-Z
This image may not mean anything except to fellow photographers who were strolling along Havana's Obispo when these women were hurrying down the street trying not to spill this tray of cocktails. Olympus OM-D E-M5
Last month I tried to help a friend get to know her new OM-D E-M5. Although I'd reviewed the camera, I was useless. She had perfectly reasonable questions I couldn't answer. Go I called my personal OM-D guru and friend, +Rohith Thumati. He's actually one of the reasons I decided to check out the Olympus camera in the first place.
Whether you've been shooting with an OM-D for a while or just got your hands on one, you should check out Rohith's recommendations for how to setup and configure this baby. It will save you a lot of anguish. I only wish he'd published this when I was working on my review! #Olympus #OM-D #OMD #OMDEM5 #OM-DE-M5

Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 (Test)
This is the lens that everyone raves about for the Sony NEX line, and after two days of testing I can see why. (At nearly $1,100, it had better be!) Here's a handheld shot taken in dark museum lighting, wide open at f/1.8. Sony NEX-6 at 1/60 second, ISO 400. This is a 4MP JPEG cropped from the 18MP RAW original. Other than that, it's SOOC (straight out of camera). Click to see full-size image, still cropped to 4MP.

Sony NEX-6 Tests, Day 1
I went out with +Scott Loftesness, the NEX-6 and six (!) lenses today. The camera is great -- but better than the NEX-7? -- and the lenses are mixed. No surprise, the Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 is gorgeous. Great detail, color and contrast and reasonable distortion (correctible). Here's a sample. More to come and more to shoot.

Terracotta Warrior
These sculptures from the third century B.C. but only discovered in 1974 are even cooler than I imagined. There's a great exhibit of the Terracotta Army at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Highly recommended. Go early -- it gets crowded.
Continuing the tests of the Sony NEX-6. This time with the 50mm f/1.8. I darkened the background in Photoshop and cropped about 10% of the image, but the statue is SOOC.
