More Hangouts love for different bandwidth environments

Today we're excited to launch two new features that improve the Hangouts experience in areas with low and/or unreliable connectivity:

1) Bandwidth slider. At the top right of every hangout is a new slider that lets you adjust your bandwidth preferences in real-time. This makes it easier to keep hangouts going, even in areas with poor connectivity.

2) Audio-only mode. Choose this mode to send and receive audio only, and thus, significantly reduce your bandwidth requirements. Other participants will only see your profile picture, but they'll hear you loud and clear.

Have you looked at your Videos tab lately?

Google added a terrific new feature. Your Youtube videos show up under your Google+ Videos tab (finally making it worth having). This is fabulous for people like +Daria Musk, but it is there for everybody with a linked account. Below is +Mike Elgan's tab (apologies, Mike!) which has nothing to be embarrassed by, but which points out that having multiple videos titled "My Edited Video" may not be the best presentation now that they show up here.

I hope people take full advantage of this, but it is one more place to check to make sure your seams aren't showing.

I'm not sold on tablets as a replacement for laptops or desktops. After having one for a couple of months, I see the biggest advantage in using them to display pictures and video either on the tablet or to my TV.

For anything that involves typing and editing, my iMac still comes out on top. Maybe it's just my fat old fingers, but my accuracy is much better with a mouse and keyboard, and frustration level much lower.

Do you need a $20,000 TV?

If you haven't heard of "Ultra-HD" TV, don't worry. It's a newish TV technology that very recently acquired that name. Until a few weeks ago, the standard was called “4K” high-definition. It's been billed for some time as the next step in the evolution of TV. 

Smarty-pants know-it-alls will tell you that the downside to Ultra-HD TV is that there’s no content.

Broadcast programming won’t be on board in any consistent way for years. The first network to get on board will almost certainly be Japan’s NHK, which won’t begin broadcasting in Ultra-HD until 2016 at the earliest. And if you don't live in Japan, that doesn't help you.
