Why (and how) we put our Terms of Service on GitHub.

It's nice to say that you are customer-centric, customer-first, etc, but what really matters is how much of this you are willing to put down on paper. Your Terms of Service are the actual contract between you and your clients, not your keynote presentations, or your posts on Facebook and twitter. http://blog.vrypan.net/2014/05/05/terms-of-service-on-github/

a (almost complete) list of our contributions to other open source projects.

The other day I mentioned on twitter one that one of our pull requests was merged to an open source project. Then @pgaval replied that it's nice to see companies announce their contributions to open source projects, and I totally agree.

I would even like this to be an important thing for tech companies. And I don't mean just big companies, like Google or Facebook that have the luxury to open source entire projects. I'm talking about small startups, like ours, that contribute and improve the existing code base we all depend on.

So, apart from our own project's code, here is a (almost complete) list of our pull requests so far. It's not like a million lines of code, but we are proud we can contribute while building our own product.

The packet capture shown in these new NSA slides shows internal database replication traffic for the anti-hacking system I worked on for over two years. Specifically, it shows a database recording a user login as part of this system:

Recently +Brandon Downey, a colleague of mine on the Google security team, said (after the usual disclaimers about being personal opinions and not speaking for the firm which I repeat here) - "fuck these guys":

I now join him in issuing a giant Fuck You to the people who made these slides. I am not American, I am a Brit, but it's no different - GCHQ turns out to be even worse than the NSA.

We designed this system to keep criminals out. There's no ambiguity... more »

divorce is never easy: split a project subfolder with #Git

When splitting a git project it's usually not a good idea to alter history, e.g. using 'git filter-branch' and 'git subtree split'. A better way, for which we present a quick recipe, is to use tags and 'git replace' to develop the subproject in a new repo while keeping history separate.

How to use OS X Finder color labels from the command line.

OS X Finder has a number of features most users rarely use. One of them, which I've lately become a big fan of, are colour labels.

Setting the color label of a file or a folder is trivial: just right-click on it and select the color.

Some users will probably use the colour labels to organise their files, for example they may label red a file they often use to find it easier in folder with many files.

I'm more interested in how they can be integrated in an automated workflow.

Crafting a blog. The long story (kind of borring) of how I ended up writing my own static blog generator (bucket3) and how I replaced blog comments with "mentions" from other sites.

[...] Throughout these years, I was never satisfied with the underlying "engine". I went from HTML pages to PHPSlash, (a PHP port of the features of the then extremely popular slashdot.org), to drupal, to ez Publish, to wordpress and many others. I mostly hosted my content on my own server, but I'va also used most hosted blogging platforms, from blogger.com, to wordpress.com, to posterous.com, to tumblr.com. I've tried tweaking each platform to my likes, from playing with settings and themes to writing modules, but it never felt right. [...]

I remained silent about the whole Focal relicensing troubles for now. There was a lot of drama between the app being GPL, and the fact Cyanogen Inc wanted to use it, which drove some frustration between me, some CM contributors, and CM leaders. As a result, to avoid any problem, Focal has been removed from CyanogenMod. I think you deserve explanations and “behind the scenes” view on how all of this happened, and to know it’s not just a last-minute decision or ragequit.

This is the true, fully-featured story of the “Focal drama”. It's not a rant about how Cyanogen Inc is bad or anything (and it can be a good thing, with a few conditions, see at the end of the post), but just an insight on how this all happened, and how some people were and are feeling.

The Chevy Volt: the "poor man's Tesla"

+Andy Grignon gives me a ride in his new Chevy Volt. It's a neat car, doesn't get enough credit from the geeks. Maybe Andy will change that (he was on the first iPhone team, and ran Palm's software team, now is building a startup that's pretty cool).

In many ways the Volt is better than the Tesla for the average driver. First of all it costs around $42,000, instead of $70,000+ for the Tesla. Second of all it goes about 40 miles on electricity and then a small gas engine charges up the batteries (so you can go on long road trips without needing to stop for a charge). He's barely made a dent in his first tank of gas and has driven more than 300 miles already.

It's nice to see American engineering doing so well, though.

Andy told me he's already figuring out where all thec... more »

New manufacturing techniques. Six videos, all of which you should watch to get a sense of the stuff that's coming out of this important R&D lab in Silicon Valley.

Google Analytics rant: unable to remove property

During the years, people have given me user (view-only) rights to many +Google Analytics properties: friends, clients, etc. Many of them, I'm no longer interested in viewing any more, some of them ever correspond to dead sites.

Guess what? You can not remove these properties from your Google Analytics account! You have to contact an administrator (I don't know them, or I don't want to contact them) or you are stuck with it for life.

A google search will show that users have been complaining for years, but the Google Analytics team has done nothing (other than setting up a custom contact form at one point, which BTW no longer works).

Good news for spammers: you can add anyone to your google analytics account and they will have to see your site every single time they login to Analytics, and... more »
