It's a given that there exists certain people (1% of the population) who simply lack the capacity to care for their fellow man, to the extent they will inflict horrific torture and kill for their sadistic pleasure. They are of course psychopaths who make up 20% of prison inmates, are responsible for 50% of all violent crimes, with  a 3-5 times higher recidivism rate than normal offenders.

This is not your average sociopath with a taste for blood. It's the person who will rape a 17 year old South African girl, slit her stomach open, pull her intestines out and replace it with broken shards of glass before breaking her fingers, legs then slitting her throat.

It's quite obvious that someone who would do this is a risk and should be segregated from society. If tasked with deciding the fate of the 17 year old's attacker, some would push for life imprisonment... more »

Am I the only one that thought Iron Man 3 was a disaster?
The only redeeming factor was RDJ. I tried to suspend disbelief, really I did, even when Pepper regenerated with exactly the same terrible hairstyle, but it just didn't work.

It fascinates me that given current neuro-scientific knowledge, that the above quote was written in 1886 by Auguste Villiers de l'Isle-Adam in Tomorrow's Eve.  More so given findings that damage to the brain's ventromedial prefrontal cortex not only affects emotions, but can eliminate some of them completely. 

If a tiny brain incision could eliminate emotional pain, the question is, would you want to?

A few weeks ago, two posters highlighted a very bizarre finding on Google Plus. That your profile's gender specification (Male, Female, Other) influenced the content you saw in the former Explore and What's Hot tabs respectively.

Google's Chief Architect offered feedback that the Explore tab was using an older, more gender sensitive algorithm, however the What's Hot tab had been modernised, with gender as a factor, but not a big one. If anyone wants to know, what you see in What's Hot is supposed to take into account "properties inherent to the post and the viewer, which includes profile information," he said. I'm feeling under the weather, I'm convinced it's because I haven't been eating properly since the flood. I don't get hungry the way I'm supposed to, rather I have to see food or be reminded of it to remember to eat. As such, I'm paying for it with flu like symptoms which have forced me to laze around and not do much, except think random silly thoughts (which I do anyway, but more so when my mind is cloudy and medicated). For example.

Why do some women think baby talk is cute? Why do some men not cringe when their partners use baby talk? Or do they, urgh, enjoy it it? Add to that;

Why do mostly occidental dwellers call their same-aged-not-supporting-them-financially sex partners 'Daddy'? We don't do that over here on the south of the dark continent - we typically reserve 'Daddy' for the man who spawns and/or... more »

If Hell is other people, what is Heaven?
I believe in heaven and hell, not as mythical places post mortem, but as a self-imposed, neurological or pharmaceutically enhanced state of mind belonging only to the living. One of my good friends is concerned her father will die in the arms of his second wife and be buried a Muslim––they are buried on the same day of death––rather than a 'good Christian'. I don't know what to say to that, but I'm beginning to think hell is other people who forego logic and reason in the vain attempt to cling to antiquated myths shrouded in promises of eternal salvation or pits of a hell they've only ever heard about, from the living.

This poor guy, he posts a rant that his post regarding a metaphysical explanation for black holes was deleted first from the Space then the Buddhist community. I receive the notification on his rant, click into the post - the post was deleted. The ironic unintentional metaphor amuses me. 

So what does the poor guy do? He spam posts his complaint and notifies his circles, then gets lambasted for not formatting his rant correctly. "It's a wall of text! It's TLDR! Use bold! Use italics! Use paragraph spacing! Don't add links in your post! Don't! Don't! Don't!" This poor man. Or woman.

Given half the chance, people love to talk about themselves and it's not a bad thing, but there's a time for everything. An example, if someone is venting or ranting, they are talking about themselves which is apropos. However someone then responding to the venter by talking about themselves or how the venter is doing it wrong or what they should've, could've, would've done in that situation, that's just offside.

Perhaps it's just me, but being a good listener sometimes means shutting your pie hole and offering not a single anecdote about your life which I guarantee you that person is too upset to care about. Some see it as showing empathy by using examples from their own lives and some people welcome that brand of empathy, I unfortunately don't. What are the acceptable limits of PDAs and why? Also, when they are violated, why the icky gut reaction?
This is the question from +Adam Iredale. He goes on to ask, "What if the PDAees are both male? I know what to expect for the answer for both female (the male answer, that is). Do looks count? What if two beautiful people are getting their pash on? Two heinously unfortunately ugly people?"

I guess we could extend this to our online worlds, are couples who salivate all over each other's profiles icky or sweet? What if they're discussing their sex lives?

I'm not being negative, but I actually don't like this image. I like the sentiment, but I find the font hideous, the background blergh and the bold double exclamation marks at the end are so not me. I mean I don't go around all crazy eyed screaming Bring it on!!  I'd smile, knowingly in that knowledgeable sorta way, that only experience can teach, that the perennial it will be brought and I'll be obliged to handle it, when I handle it, with not one but at least five cups of coffee. "It's urgent!!" they'll scream and I'll smile, calmly, knowingly.
