Scientist discover that mice hair grows and repairs itself at specific times in the day. This suggests that cell repair may not be happening continuously but may be more active later in the day. Amazing! #science

Spelt pasta with cauliflower cream sauce and miso glazed courgettes!
I loved everything about this meal. It could have used more courgettes or one more veggie (like mushrooms) but I had to work with what was left in my fridge.
The sauce is made from:
A medium cauliflower head steamed,
Sautéed onions and garlic with a vegetable stock cube, a couple hand fulls of spinach, fresh basil, a cup of nutritional yeast, cayenne pepper, and black pepper. Whizzed together the cooked cauliflower and sautéed onion mixture with the other things and water (just keep adding it until it reaches the consistency of pasta sauce).
Sautéed the courgettes in some miso paste to top the pasta. I sprinkled this vegan cheese I'm becoming obsessed with on top... And voilà!
The sauce was crazy fast to make and +Giga Zulmatashvili said it was delicious.
Healthy and yum. Yay... more »

Apply now for a one-way ticket to settle Mars in 2023.
http://applicants.mars-one.com/
Look how many people have applied! Do you want to do this? It looks like many of the people applying are 19/20 years old. How many of these people are really going to be willing to give up their lives, families, jobs, etc in ten years time in order to take a shuttle to Mars knowing they are never coming back?
The scientist in me is fascinated by this and says sign me up, but the normal person in me thinks this sounds like a horrible plan. I also am not sure how I feel about it being a huge reality tv show... Big Brother Mars?
Also.. is this for real?

"According to the estimates made by the U.S. government, nearly 138,500 whales and dolphins will be killed by the use of seismic airguns along the East coast right from Delaware to Florida. Apart from this, it will also disturb the necessary activities of millions more."

“Bump in the app before you bump in the bed.”
Apparently accidentally getting together with a cousin is a big problem in Iceland. A big enough problem that someone made an app that allows potential love interests in Iceland to tap their phones and figure out if they might actually be related.

Recharge your mobile device with....Water!
"The portable PowerTrekk only needs a little water to charge a mobile phone.
A power source for your mobile phone can now be as close as the nearest tap, stream, or even a puddle, with the world's first water-activated charging device.
Based on micro fuel cell technology developed at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, the MyFC PowerTrekk uses ordinary water to extend battery life for devices of up to 3 watts."

Bill Gates' site, The Gates Notes, has some great infographics about meat production and the impact on the environment. The site also discusses some of the advances made in the science of creating plant-based meat alternatives. It seems that Gates is betting on meatless alternatives as the "meat" of the future.
In related news, it seems that nearly every day there is more science showing that red meat is bad for you, and this time it isn't just cholesterol and saturated fat that are causing the problem.

This is a great podcast about the ways in which baby names can reflect social/economic background, culture, and even the political ideology of parents and discusses different studies that examine if your name really does impact who you become.
One really interesting part discusses how having a black sounding name can lead to seeing different adverts in a google search. In this case the researchers are taking about the same company adverts being either for finding an arrest record (with a black name) versus a "searching for... " advert (with a white sounding name).
If you can't listen to it, read the transcript.
What do you think about your name? Do you think your name has shaped your life or does it reflect more about your parents' personalities?

Mind Over Matter? Core Body Temperature Controlled by the Brain
A team of researchers led by Associate Professor Maria Kozhevnikov from the Department of Psychology at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences showed, for the first time, that it is possible for core body temperature to be controlled by the brain. The scientists found that core body temperature increases can be achieved using certain meditation techniques (g-tummo) which could help in boosting immunity to fight infectious diseases or immunodeficiency.

Take part in a European-wide survey about marine litter! Just follow this link: https://www.psy.plymouth.ac.uk/MARLISCO/
Tell us your views about this topic in our short survey (it only takes about 15 mins). What types of litter are found in the sea? Where does it come from? What are the consequences? Who is responsible?
This is part of a project called MARLISCO (Marine Litter in Europe Seas: Social Awareness and Co-Responsibility). We seek to raise awareness of the problems and potential solutions relating to marine litter, to change people's attitudes and behaviours towards this environmental issue.
Contact the researcher bonny.hartley@plymouth.ac.uk if you have questions or would like more information about the survey or MARLISCO project.

This is an interesting article about binge tv watching and Netflix's business strategy. Also, it'sdouble awesome because arrested development has 7 new episodes being produced by Netflix. I am excited about that... but how many times have our hopes been crushed about new arrested development content? So I am refraining from being too excited until it happens. tiny yay

It is good to see that research on bullying is being federally funded and hopefully research like this can be used to help school officials combat bullying. Is anyone out there surprised by the findings though? I'm not.
Have you experienced bullying? Who were the main bullies in your school? This is such an important topic. Let's DISCUSS!
