Tank House and Windmill - Yolo County, California

Who doesn't love an old windmill? The building houses a large water storage tank. Character developed over time.

Rolling Gold - Dunningan Hills, California

While traveling the back roads of Yolo County I came upon scene after scene that just had to be captured.  Over 500 exposures in several hours and not one with a tripod. It was quite liberating.  With narrow roads and very little traffic, I would often just throw on the hazards and go for it.  The lighter portion of the wheat field was receiving direct sunlight, while the remainder was being filtered by the clouds.

A Tree's View - Yolo County, California

While aimlessly roaming the backroads of Yolo County, I found this loan oak (my favorite) with a great view of the Capay Valley. It's fun to just take ramdon roads until you can't remember where the heck you are. That's when you find these great scenes. Getting back home can be a bit of a challenge, especially if you don't have cell service.

Were you on Lake Berryessa yesterday?

These guys were having a great time and when they saw me taking pictures of them, they came over and put on quite a show. I don't know who had more fun. I would love to test the power of social media and get a copy of this image to them.

Share this on your wall and help me find these guys. Tactile Photo can only reach so far by itself. This was taken yesterday May 16th at 7:15 in the evening near Monticello Dam. If you know someone who lives in the surrounding area of Lake Berryessa, share it with them - you never know. Being from Sacramento, I now believe in long shots.

Caution: Not Gluten Free

Dunningan Hills - Yolo County, California

After seeing a beautiful image of a wheat field by +jared ropelato (Jared is a great landscape photographer. If you don't have him in a circle, I suggest you add him) and the storm clouds rolling thru Northern California, I decided to make a trip to the Dunningan Hills area of Yolo County. Having passed these hills on literally hundreds of trips back and forth to Redding, I can't believe I never thought to take a turn and go exploring. This time of year, it's all about the wheat. Acres upon acres of pure gold as far as the eye can see. I made many many images this day, but this particular comp really grabbed me with the extra element of the oak trees. An image tends to be at its best, when it contains a foreground, middle-ground and background.

Limantour Panorama - Point Reyes National Seashore

I had the pleasure of attending a panoramic workshop this last Saturday with instructor +Gary Crabbe  at Point Reyes. I gained some valuable knowledge and with Gary's help I put together this 25 image vertical stitch. It was made super easy with a +Really Right Stuff  single rail pano package.  I must admit after seeing Gary's examples of his multi-row images - a multi-row pano package is now on the list of must haves.  As a 16-bit tiff it actually exceeded the 4gb limit in photoshop, so I had to reduce it down slightly and then re-size the jpg to be able to upload it.  We had far from ideal conditions, but it was still good experience to create this large of a piece.

When Everything Comes Together - Eldorado National Forest

After shooting in this small and secluded forested area for several hours, I had packed up my bag and was headed to the truck when something caught my eye. I thought I had seen all there was to see, but as usual I was wrong. A dogwood and pine tree were intertwined with a towering redwood some 20 feet beyond catching the last few rays of the day. In order to capture just the right perspective, I stood on my tippee toes atop this small rock. It took quite a few tries, but I was finally able to get things just right using a shallow depth of field and telephoto lens to compress the scene. Nature continues to amaze me everyday.

White Veil - Eldorado National Forest

The original plan was to head up into the mountains as thunderstorms were forecast for the early evening, but my plans were quickly altered. I made an unsuccessful trip up Thursday evening specifically to photograph the dogwood blooms, but came away empty handed. After no less than a half dozen stops along the South Fork American River I struck gold or in this case white perfection. I spent the next several hours clicking away and enjoying the sounds of the river and the slight breeze blowing thru the grove of dogwoods, redwoods and oaks. The blooms were in prefect condition and made for countless comps. Hope you enjoy dogwoods, because I have lots to share.

Lupine Dreams - Folsom, California

After seeing +Willie Huang beautiful image "Purple Magic" I knew I had to make a trip out to Folsom Lake.  It was windy, not a cloud in the sky and from what I had heard - the lupine were past their prime. I knew if I didn't go, I would kick myself for the next 5-10 years waiting for another super bloom.  Needless to say, the photography gods smiled upon me last night.  Our first colorful sunset in weeks, not a drop of wind and the lupine (while faded somewhat) were still in pretty good shape.

Trough Full of Color - Garrapata State Park, California

With very calm seas and no clouds, I had to search high and low for a worth while composition at sunset. I slowed my exposure to create some nice motion blur of this trough and angled the camera to capture as much of the setting sun color as possible.

Phalaenopsis

With it still breezy outside, I decided to make this image inside the house using artificial light. I used a couple off-camera speedlights set at 1/2 power, the camera was set at f/16, 2.5 sec, iso 100. I shot a series of 8 exposures manually adjusting the focus to different points. I then brought everything into Lightroom for a lens correction, white balance adjustment (using a grey card) and some very slight highlight and shadow adjustments. I then exported all eight exposures into Photoshop to align and blend into one image with everything in focus. A few more tweaks (2 hours later) and pressto - the final result. I know it seems like a ridiculous process, but it's what it takes to get to the next level.

Three Brave Souls

I went out yesterday afternoon to make some images, all the while thinking with a heavy heart of those in Boston who had experienced the unthinkable. I had planned on photographing at a different spot, but low on fuel I decided for this closer location. Not knowing the full extent of what had occurred earlier in the day, I now know why I was guided to this scene. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those effected by this senseless tragedy, but know that good will always prevail over evil.

Bowling Ball Beach - Mendocino County, California

I was able to cross off another location on my image bucket list this past weekend. We made another long drive in search of great light. I had the beach entirely to myself for both sunset and sunrise the next morning. I suppose the 40+mph winds probably played a roll in my seclusion. The rugged Northern California coastline never disappoints.

I headed back out to the oak tree I shot on Sunday in hopes that the afternoon clouds would provide some color at sunset. We got part of the way there, but the clouds ended up sitting on the horizon and thus only giving us a small glimmer of what's possible. I have to say though, I'm loving the reflection.

While this could be any winter mountain scene mere feet from your trusty car or warm (fire-going) log cabin, it was actually the culmination of several hours of trailblazing in the most beautiful powder imaginable. During the year I do a fair amount of hiking and backpacking, but the freedom you feel when setting off not having to follow someone else's pre-determined route or trail is truly something everyone should experience. In case my wife reads this, I always carry a GPS device and (extremely important) a Spot Satellite Messenger. There is a statistic that says the people who become lost the most often in the mountains, are middle-aged men who think they will never get lost. I don't plan on ever being part of that group.

Title: Light & Shadow
Location: Yavapai Point - Grand Canyon

Although we were not fortunate enough to have a colorful sky, the morning light on the canyon was pretty spectacular. Normally as a part of my post processing I often lighten the shadows to expose more detail, but in this case the deep shadows added drama against the warm sunrise light.

Friend and fellow photog +Aravind Krishnaswamy just happened to be vacationing in the same area, so we braved the extreme cold and made the best of it.

My first photography trip to the American Southwest - 3 national parks, Antelope Canyon and many other stops along the way. On this particular morning the full moon all but escaped me, but the beautiful light more than made up for it.

"Against All Odds"

- Folsom, CA

This one is for you +John Getchel   Great hanging out with you yesterday.

After several days of socked in weather, the storm broke just in time for the setting sun to light up the country side. It's always a good idea to have a camera with you, as you never know when these moments may present themselves.  I was heading home from a meeting with no plans to shoot, when I happened to drive by the same tree I shot last month and wow - right place, right time.  It only takes a few minutes to capture the moment and have it forever.  The best camera is the one you have with you at the time.

I always enjoy the puzzled look, the occasional stare - why is that guy standing along side the road? What could he possibly be taking a picture of way out here? If only they could see what I see, they too would stop and enjoy the view. Just after a storm moves thru, you can always count on wonderful light.

"Lower McCloud River Falls"

- McCloud, CA

http://www.tactilephoto.com/Prints/Waterfalls/26725576_DSBfDH#!i=2238794980&k=wKp67xG

The McCloud River is a river that flows east of and parallel to the Sacramento River, 77.1 miles (124.1 km) long, in northern California in the United States. It drains a scenic mountainous area of the Cascade Range north of Redding and is a tributary of the Sacramento River.

The river was originally known as the "McLeod River", after the Hudson's Bay Company hunter and trapper Alexander Roderick McLeod who explored it during the winter of 1829-1830. By the 1860s, the spelling "McCloud" was widely used, likely because that was the conventional American spelling of the Scottish name, and perhaps in part to honor California pioneer Ross McCloud, who settled here in 1855.

"Mossbrae in Fall"

- Dunsmuir, CA

Mossbrae Falls is a very popular destination, especially for photographers. You can find many many different images online, but because of the shear size of this falls, there are an infinite number of amazing compostions. This comp is merely a small portion of the falls, but best showcases the remaining fall colors and cascading Sacramento River.

‎"Mt. Shasta (Aerial View)"

- Northern California (from 10,500 ft.)

More bonding time with Dad this morning as we took a quick flight around Northern California at 10,000 ft. Shasta is looking incredible right now as the lastest storm dropped a nice blanket of snow on the mountain.
