Bethesda Terrace Stairs, NYC

In Central Park, in Manhattan, New York City, there is the Bethesda Terrace, one end of which is flanked twin grand stairs to connect two levels, and to provide a bridge for a street on the upper level. This is one of those twin staircases.

Fuzzy Wuzzy Moth Fly

Saw some of the people in my stream sharing for +Macro Monday and seeing this week's mini theme being about "fuzzy" things I immediately thought of this.
Moth flies, commonly found near damp places, such as drains and bathrooms have a very hairy fuzzy head.
This is a moth fly in the mirror. The dark background is because of the oblique angle of this flash illuminated shot (the light of the flash is reflected away).

Light as Rain

An abstract, minimalist in origin, thus a #ministract , or an attempt at it at least.

A simple image made by shooting rain falling in front of a street lamp. This is monochrome in origin (sodium vapor street lights emit an almost pure yellow light) and in processing (sepia toned, since I don't really like that much the yellow of sodium lamps).

Basilica of Our Lady of Guanajuato
(Four Photos)

The city of Guanajuato in central Mexico (capital of the state of Guanajuato) is a really beautiful city, full of colonial architecture and a unique street layout. Part of the sights that must be seen are the baroque churches, among them this one, the Cathedral of Guanajuato.

The first image shows the main altar and part of the ceiling and the ornate chandeliers.
The second shows a view towards the back of the central nave, with the Church Organ above the entrance.
The third shows a view of the central nave towards the altar.
The fourth shows the outside of the Church.
All are best seen full size (I even uploaded them without downsizing nor compression, so zooming would show more detail).

One of the national teams of Spain or Uruguay (no idea which, or if both) must be lodged at this hotel, as they are playing against each other as I post this at the new Pernambuco Arena in Recife.

Fence with Unicorn-crowned Column
Three columns down (after the lamps) there's a lion. The two animals are part of the coat of arms of the United Kingdom.

This is the fence on the east side of Buckingham Palace, the London residence and offices of the British monarchy.
As befits London weather, it had rained before, and you can see the sky stil overcast in the background, luckily the sky cleared enough for the setting sun to illuminate this scene.

Don't Pet the Pennsylvanian Wasp

Somewhere in Pennsylvania, sometime last year, a wasp entered a restroom where there was a sign with a hand (something about hygiene? don't remember exactly). A not-so-young-anymore man with a camera was there, and saw a wasp on a hand as a photo opportunity.

That man was me (you weren't expecting me to say otherwise anyway, ;-) no?), and this was one of many times I'm glad to have my trusty Canon S95 with me (almost) all the time. You could say we're joined at the hip, as I usually carry it in a bag with belt loop.

Personal anecdotes aside, even on a +Buggy Friday petting wasps is not a good idea, OK? :-)

Monterrey Poniente

"Poniente" in Spanish means "west", but also "sunset" (e.g. "sol poniente" would translate as "setting sun"), so it fits as title, as this is a some minutes before the sun sets, and this is a view of the southwest part of Monterrey.
As I've written before, Monterrey, in northeast Mexico, is a sprawling conurbation with several municipalities forming a large metropolitan area,  the third largest city in Mexico.
This view is from the lookout point of the Cerro del Obispado (Hill of the Bishop's Palace), which has a very large monumental flag on top (a view of which I posted not long ago to my Mexico album). Almost all of the city is surrounded by mountains providing some great landscapes, which I really miss in the topographically-challenged Recife where I am currently.

Açai Tropical

Açaí na tigela ("açaí in a bowl") is quite popular here in Recife (Pernambuco, northeast Brasil). The açaí berry is the fruit of a palm from the Amazon which has become quite popular lately as it is supposed to be rich in antioxidants and nutrients.
It is quite tasty and served this way, frozen and blended like a smoothie of deep purple pulp, it is creamy, delicious and refreshing in a hot autumn night (it's always hot and humid here!). It's usually served with banana, and/or strawberries and granola. In this case it also has kiwi, and the granola was served separate.

AFAIK this way of serving it, on a half coconut, may have originated in the place where I ate this (a placed called Ponto de Açaí or "açaí place"), where it can be found in the menu precisely under the name "açaí tropical".  The soft and tenderflesh of the ... more »

Cantilevered Concrete Floating Stairs

The first time I visited the Recife/Guararapes International Airport (Pernambuco, NE Brasil), back in 2008, for a very brief work visit, I saw these stairs and though they looked interesting. Then when I came back briefly in 2010 I realized why they looked interesting: you have a whole section of concrete, extending what would be two floors of height in a regular building, floating with no more support than its anchoring in the two levels it connects.
Now that I'm living here for a while, I took a visit I had to make to the airport for immigration matters (*) as an opportunity to photograph them.
I like them from an aesthetic point of view, but also admire them from a materials/engineering P.O.V.

With airports functioning almost as a small city within a city the structures and architecture of them can be fascinating... more »

Moth in the Mirror (Monochromed)
OR
Moth Fly (Squared)

I have shared in the past photos of this moth fly in the mirror. In this case I focused on the mirror plane showing the underside, and also the lower part of the wings. This is a square crop, so if you don't see it that way Google is cropping part of the image.

While shooting this I thought that maybe since all photons are coming from one single plane the mirror image would not be affected by the shallow depth of field effect. It seems I was more or less right, only one of the antennae look out of focus, whereas focusing on this side of the mirror I always ended with a portion of the fly out of the focal plane.
If you pixel-peep it's not as sharp, which I think comes from a combo of distortion of the light passing through glass twice, my not having such a steady hand, and maybe a bit of the... more »

Lábaro Patrio

That translates as "national banner", and is the fancy and formal name we give to our flag in México.
It doesn't look like it but this is a giant flag, which flies over the Cerro del Obispado (Bishop's Palace Hill) in Monterrey (state of Nuevo León, northeast Mexico).
Wikipedia says that this flag is currently the second largest in México; 50 by 28.6 meters, weighting 230 kilograms, hanging from a 120 tons and 100.6 m high flagpole. That flagpole is in an esplanade in the summit of the Cerro del Obispado (which sits at 775 m above sea level, while the city itself is in a valley at about 500 m above sea level)

Spiraling Up and Away

Another view, with a different processing, of the same structure I posted last wednesday []. As I mentioned in the comments in that post, these are the spiral stairs in a small hotel in Mexico City. I loved the geometries in them and I was glad I could capture a few shots of this. As usual, a few came out quite well, and those are the ones I post. This one is quite processed to focus on the geometry.
In spanish we call these stairs "escaleras de caracol", where "caracol" means snail. This one capture does sort of remind me of a snail shell.

With 7500 thanks to everyone that has me in their circles, and much appreciation for the daily photography theme curators that make posting more fun and rewarding.

Thanks to all of you, all >7500 of you that honor me by having me in your circles
It still surprises me having so many people interested in my photos, thanks to each one of you. Please don't be shy and leave a comment if you can.

I was amazed when I reached 1,000, but the occasion passed without a post marking it. I was even more surprised when I realized I had over 5000. I had thought of marking that milestone, but it was a busy time for me, which coincided with some people adding me to popular shared circles, and by the time I realized it I was, much to my surprise, a few hundreds above 5K... so I let it pass. This weekend my follower count went over 7500.

I'm not letting this one go without comment! :-)

Marking milestones is after all somewhat arbitrary, with a preference for thousands being an artifact of our decimals... more »

Aranha Pernambucana 3.2

For a third weekend in a row I'm sharing a photo of the same spider. It is in the same location as the two I posted before, and this comes from the same shooting session. I like how it looks against a black background a bit more than agains a light colored one in the previous two photos. It allows the web to stand out more easily (you may need to see it large to see the strands better)

The white background in those images came from white tiles in the first, and from white laminate finish in a kitchen cupboard in the second (below which the spider spun its web). This is a background of black tiles (which are right next to the white tiles).

They Arrived

For +Alien Abduction Friday ;-)
They are here, their fleet of orb-ships has arrived. The skies darkened, the moon turned yellow, it was these atmospheric disturbances that caught my attention, good thing I had my alien-polarization-filter in the camera, else their translucent ships might have escaped this capture.
Unfortunately their alien devices entered in resonance with the glass and broke my filter... I barely had time to remove the alien-polarization filter from my camera to prevent the latter from being damaged. I haven't seen these ships since, but sometimes I see glimpses of orbs in the sky...

Maybe the #alienabductionfriday  team ( +Alex Lapidus, +Heiko Mahr, +Karl Geiger, +Karl Geiger Jr, +Michele Cornelius, +Jon Beall and +Irene Kato ) knows who or what these are?

Spaced Power

A duo of trios of power lines, with some of spacers keeping the cables parallel.
One of the stranger, to me, sights of power lines when I came to Recife was to see that they use some structures as spacers to keep the lines appart.
I suspect people from Recife (at least those that look at electric lines) may be surprised to see cables hanging loose in other cities.  ;-)
In some cases I can see that the cables are coated with insulators, so maybe the separators are metal, most of them look very matte not metallic, I haven't taken a closer look (not that I'd like to, those are live wires!)

It's been a day of heavy rain, with transient flooding in some parts of the city, this photo is the only blue skies I've seen today (and then I had to go and process it making it less blue than it was originally :)

Amber Mosquito

An unsexy little fly, a blood sucking mosquito, with post-processing to make it look as if trapped in amber... or so I wish to think it looks. And I mention it so that through the power of suggestion you may more easily believe it does. ;-)

This one was captured after it gave up the ghost and placed over a stone counter whence the background. As I've said many times, I usually wouldn't kill a fly, but these damned disease transmitting blood suckers are an exception. So excuse me for this confession: bugs were harmed for the making of this picture. I sprayed it with insecticide, but it is now memorialized in this (and a few other) photos.

Aranha Pernambucana 3

A third different kind of spider I have photographed here in Recife. I'm sure there are many more species, but I haven't ventured much more beyond my workplace and my home when it comes to photographing animals.
I processed this shot to make the web strands more visible (not that they are too visible anyway), which had the side effect of making the spider body look darker than it actually is.
The background is the small square tiles in my apartment's kitchen, getting the spider almost centered in the grout between the tiles wasn't intended, but I loved it when I saw it, and its cruciform shape motivated me to try a square crop.

Taken, as usual for my macro shots, with my Canon Powershot SX40 HS, with the Raynox DCR-250 clip-on macro lens, a plastic diffuser to soften the built in flash, and with a circular polarization filter too,... more »

The view from the side of the Horseshoe Fall, with the water being sprayed by the force of its own falling volume and the resulting mist creating a rainbow is really quite a sight to behold, as so many on the fence are doing.

Cowboy Bebop: Reloaded

"I think it's time to blow this town, get everybody and the stuff together... OK, 3, 2, 1, let's jam "

With this one I end my Monday posts and blow the #happybugsdaychrismallory  town, as Tuesday is set to start in my timezone.

A poster of the Cowboy Bebop movie, reloaded through the #happybugsdaychrismallory  photoshop filter ()

It's been too long since I posted anything for +Movie Mashup Tuesday, hope the theme curators +Mark Rodriguez and +Isabelle Fortin won't mind that I used #moviemashuptuesday  as an excuse to wish again a happy birthday to +Chris Mallory, who is a fan of this movie and of bug photography.

With apologies to +Mar Mai for the (mis)use of her drawing of +Chris Mallory's face (which BTW is part of a fantastic panel, she's a very talented illustrator)

What does Chris Mallory liken lichen's he's likin' to?

Hard question to answer by anyone but +Chris Mallory. I liken this lichen to frosting in a cake, since it's his birthday and he likes things beyond bugs. :)

So here's a lichen, hoping he'll be lichen it a lot (if he finds it among so many #happybugsdaychrismallory  posts... the topic having peaked as #1 trending tag earlier today; and still trending as #5 as I write this!)

So anyway, this also goes to #lichenpoker  by +Dan Bowden and +The Lichen Page and just because I know how much Chris likes it () when people share posts to many themes...

Brasilian Moth, for Moth Master Mallory's Birthday

#happybugsdaychrismallory !!

I know that +Chris Mallory is a fan of moths so here's one I doubt he's seen before, from the Brasilian northeast regions, IIRC it was about 4 cm long. It took refuge from heavy rain in the hallways outside my office, we had that in common, as I was waiting for the rain to subside before going home.

Hope you have a great birthday #MothMasterMallory

BTW... remember a few months ago when you almost swore you would never make your birthday known in the  #googleplusland ? Yeah, that worked! :-P

Another Spider from Pernambuco

I saw this one at the office a few weeks ago, I hope she ate several mosquitos (those bloodsucking bastards start invading the office as soon as the sun goes down).
Slight crop, straightening, and tint adjustment, since the auto white balance made it too "cold" and bluish. Otherwise this is exactly what my Canon S95 captured.
I have no idea what family of spiders it may belong to, around my workplace I have seen several spider species, northeast Brasil does have quite a variety of invertebrates!

Grasshopper

I had posted this one already over a year ago, but didn't get much attention, as I was relatively new and was in the circles of few people . I'm resharing it hoping more would see and enjoy it, as it is one of my favorite bug photos from my own captures.
