#INNOVATION
#Teen's invention could charge your phone in 20 seconds
May 18, 2013 at 1:22 PM ET
Waiting hours for a cellphone to charge may become a thing of the past, thanks to an 18-year-old high-school student's invention. She won a $50,000 prize Friday at an international science fair for creating an energy storage device that can be fully juiced in 20 to 30 seconds.
The fast-charging device is a so-called supercapacitor, a gizmo that can pack a lot of energy into a tiny space, charges quickly and holds its charge for a long time.
What's more, it can last for 10,000 charge-recharge cycles, compared with 1,000 cycles for conventional rechargeable batteries, according to Eesha Khare of Saratoga, Calif.
"My cellphone battery always dies," she told NBC News when asked what inspired her to work on the energy-storage technology.... more »

City Gull
Some of the tallest buildings in London surround the docklands at the heart of the business and financial district of Canary Wharf.
As Eve Tucker walked along the wharf, a bird caught her eye. It was a black-headed gull, of which there are many in the city. But this one was resting on a very remarkable area of water.
Eve realized that she was looking at reflections of the straight lines of the nearby office block, distorted into moving swirls. The effect was so unusual -- it gave a beautiful setting for an urban wildlife image.
Like all true photographers, Eve had noticed what others most often fail to see, even when it's right in front of them.

Eighty-six of 166 prisoners at GITMO have already been cleared for release, yet legal and bureaucratic barriers have kept them detained indefinitely.

Space Oddity: Hadfield Records First Music Video from Space
This is incredible!
He’s leaving space on Monday, but not before giving the world a memorable parting gift. ISS Commander Chris Hadfield has captured the attention and imagination of so many during his five-plus months in space via social media and with the many videos he’s recorded while on the International Space Station. This is his final video from the station, and according to his son Evan Hadfield — who has helped orchestrate the Commander’s barrage of tweets and images — it is also, coincidentally, the first real music video ever recorded in space.
“With deference to the genius of David Bowie, here’s Space Oddity, recorded on Station,” Hadfield tweeted. “A last glimpse of the World.”

Game Change: Cheney Opens Himself to Subpoena Regarding 9/11, Iraq, Torture and Valerie Plame
When a former member of the Executive calls for Congress to subpoena another former member of the Executive, it is a game-changer. No longer can he rely on "Executive Privilege" to block his own testimony.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney has suggested that the GOP subpoena former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton again on Benghazi.
Fine and dandy. Let us first subpoena Mr. Cheney to testify about 9/11, Iraq, torture and the outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame. Unlike former Secretary Clinton, who has testified to Congress for hours on Benghazi, Cheney has never testified for one minute before Congress on any of these matters.
Indeed, Congress never really investigated 9/11. It appointed a commission more than a year later to... more »

wow, just logged in and the game began at the begining. I have lost my Springfield and everything I have worked for. The game is taking me back to the opening cartoon of the plant exploding and I have to start at square one, building the simpson home.
Anyone know how to fix this?

I wonder if the threat of mass starvation might get people to consider organic agriculture.
Bees are being wiped out by a long list of issues. One major issue is pesticides and fungicides, which not only kill bees, but weaken their immune systems and make them vulnerable to various diseases another issue.
Food companies and consumers use these chemicals because they make food cheaper. But now they're on the brink of making food VERY expensive due to shortages.
What will it take for us to reject industrial agriculture? Will the threat of starvation and massively high food prices do it?
What do you think?
