Happy 18th Birthday Heather Astrea! And thanks for flying us over our most special places in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah. You're a great pilot! Love, Mom and Dad...

My daughter turns 18 years old. It seems like yesterday that her perfect world was a warm fuzzy kitty. Now she is planning on heading to Alaska to begin her own journey. I did the same thing and never looked back. The adventure continues…

Moon over Lava Falls. This photograph cost me a Nikkor 80-200 f2.8 lens, after the acid fumes, created by lava hitting ocean water, destroyed the front glass element. But it was worth it. I sold enough prints of this to pay for the lens many times over.

Thinking back on when I spent six months in New Zealand walking all the tracks I could find. I was good for about two weeks on the trail before I ran out of tucker. Upon reentering Snivilization, a jug of DB was the first item on the agenda...

Just got back from a great bike ride with friends I have knows since the 4th grade. Perfect weather. Huge thunderstorm brewing towards the Uintas. Nice to look at all the ski runs that kept me out of trouble all winter. Richard Bullough took this photo of me, as he lead the way. Christian Child bringing up the rear, with a huge grin. This is why I am alive.

One of my favorite road trips is from my home in the Wasatch Mountains to my place in Homer, Alaska. It's about 4,000 miles. I have done it 14 times. I photographed this scene in the Yukon Territory, with winter nipping at my heels. I always stop somewhere along this stretch for a few days of exploration. Folks are still very friendly in this part of the world and wave to you when they drive by. Northern Aloha...

Have a little RED, to balance out my last GREEN posting. Living in a world of color, beauty, and life. So fortunate... So fragile~!

Thinking back to cooking ahi burritos on hot lava with Art Wolfe and Gavriel Jecan, as a magical sunset and rivers of lava filled us with awe. Back in the days when we were the only ones at the ocean entry, and I got blisters on my fingers from changing so many rolls of film...

For all of you who know Jim Gale, former Chief of Interpretation at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, one the the Pacific West Regions most respected and revered park rangers, who recently retired after 32 years of service... well, this is what he is doing now.

Slot canyons for shoulder season. No powder to ski, single track too muddy to ride. The solution? Sandstone.

Time to head to Southern Utah. Open the world of slickrock and slot canyons to my darling daughter. Goodbye winter Wasatch, Hello Zion and Paria...

I had a nice session on top of Scotts Peak yesterday, looking out over the greater Wasatch, watching the clouds blow in, hoping for another big dump. Being that I spent my boyhood here, I remembered the times I was on the summit of almost every peak I could see. Good to be back at it all these years later.

Mud season is upon us. You know what that means? Time to go find a remote slickrock canyon to get lost in for a few daze.

In contrast to the technological problems plaguing my morning, I need a visual mindrift to soothe my senses, This scene into a native Hawaiian rainforest will do the job just fine...

How about a little green in honor of Spring? Akaka Falls, Hawaii. Still skiing some slush in the Wasatch, while breaking out the mountain bikes.

So much winter still going on. Lets break it up with a visual mindrift from the previous season. Still pretty wild being back in the land of Seasons after 30 years in Hawaii. Change is good.

Time to get some color back on my page. What a concept... How much has this social media stuff changed us? How much time does it consume? What is the value? These questions need to be addressed to everything we do.

A big shout-out to Bob Merrill, and Brian Brechwald , guides at Ski Utah Interconnect Tour, who showed us a great time skiing six Utah ski resorts in one day. Epic beauty and many turns.

Thinking back to being in this river on the Napali coast of Kauai, after the twelve mile hike, with my medium format camera sitting on a submerged tripod an inch above the swirling bubbles… the beauty setting my soul free…

I am prepping for an adventure to NW Utah in search of 10,000 year old archaeological sites. In the meantime, I am looking at this 1200 year old panel and thinking about how relative TIME is...

I wish the youth of the planet could put their cell phones away, and spend an entire day sitting at the base of a huge Redwood tree, listening to the silence without distraction. Feeling the breath of the forest, touching moss.

Just skied a quick 20K vertical at PCMR, after 20 days off due to the dreaded flu. Gotta love getting back out into the Wasatch beauty, and falling snow streaked with sunshine, ice crystals exploding in aspen light. Just right...

One of the coolest places on the planet is the White Sands National Monument, of New Mexico. I made it there after a hot air ballon crash in Albuquerque that nearly broke ribs, as I impacted into my Pentax 67 and various Nikon bodies... It hurt so good, knowing where the pain came from. Anyway, it had just poured rain on the white sands, and I loved the texture it created.

I took this photo from my camp at the edge of the kipuka, then knocked on the flap of my buddy, Frans Lantings tent, and said- "you gotta come and see this..." Kilauea is good!

Raining in Park City, Utah. I might as well go back to Hawaii and hang out at the ocean entry, if the winter is going to act like this!

Those 90 mph winds last week wasted the Wasatch backcountry. Argh. I wonder how the La Sals would ski about now...?
