Framed fish
Project 52 B&W
Week 20: Framed
Not my first idea. Spent a couple hours a couple days in the seedy part of downtown to catch someone getting arrested and was going to claim they were "framed" in the photo. Everybody was nice apparently during those times, so didn't see anyone getting arrested. Oh well, at least didn't mess up with karma too much.
This is a sign for a fish restaurant. it is a 2-d rendition of a salmon out of bent metal that rotates inside the frame of the sign structure.
It is a salmon (not a shark) and I suppose it is angry because it got caught and is about to be eaten.

One word: Yum!
Chocolate covered strawberries sprinkled with sugary sprinkly things (don't know what they are called)
I am not a fan of food photography, as unless you know what you are doing, everything looks like mud, and b&w on top of that is another layer of challenge to bring out the foodness of the food.
I was looking for people eating hotdogs when I ran into these. The sprinkles give it a nice contrasty texture that makes it suitable for b&w.

Speeding to a halt
Project 52 B&W
Week 18: Speed
Obvious choice this week.
This is obviously a pan. The warp drive effect is accomplished by panning a car that is coming to a quick stop.
Picked a spot that had a red light at the bottom of a hill frequented by billies in trucks who sooner would come to a screeching halt, so I could create the effect.

Nighttime walkabout
Project 52 B&W
Week 17: Night Lights
I had this photo in mind for a while, having accidentally shot something similar before. I just hadn't made the effort to go out of my way to the other end of town and wait for the right amount of crowds in front of the store lights to have it be meaningful. This is one of about 50 shots, having nice groupings of people, some standing and some in motion. Would have liked a little more blur on the walkers though.

Luck... protects fools, small children and 'togs with no clue on how to do their assignments
Project 52 B&W
Week 16: Fade
I seriously had no idea what or how to do this week's assignment. Trying to shoot overcast skies and grey ocean fading into the other turned out to be a better and easier implemented shot in my mind than in reality.
Then I ran into this shot from early in the week. I recently bought an old old 24mm, otherwise wonderful lens which had unfortunately a sticky aperture.
After I picked it up, I was trying to assess the severity of the problem - turned out to be quite bad. And here is one of the shots I took while trying to see if the aperture would be closing to the f22 I had it set to (as you can see, it had to go back) - but at least I ended up with a "faded" pic "fading" from one side to the other ;-)
And if... more »

Monochrome backlit flowers
I had an interesting idea to challenge myself even more. Around here there are these monochrome flowers. they are all green - the stalk, the petals, etc. - and it is the exact same green. When you take a photo of them they looks like pea soup.
I challenged myself to figure out a way to make the pop enough for a b&w photo, and decided to backlight them. Which gave them quite a bit of contrast, and the structure came out too.
I still think this is an ugly picture though. I don't think closeups of flowers and birds ever come out like people think they would. But there it is

Whichever way you like
Project 52 B&W
Week 14: Transportation
Had been thinking of this shot for a while, and this weeks theme was just the excuse I needed. Too bad I didn't think of bringing a tripod and ended up handholding a 400mm shot (also about 1.5 hours into waiting and holding for the right shot didn't help shaky hands). I need to repeat this when the sun comes back and preferably in the morning so the heat rising up doesn't add to the blur.

Tried to make the photo so that a plane was going into the moon. Unfortunately there were only two evenings where the moon was going to be on the flight path, and the winds didn't turn so the take-offs didn't get to be towards the moon. Oh well, there is always next year.

Here it is, uneven in many ways.
Yellow paint by blue(ish) water worked nicely in B&W. Pulled back the blues a bit to make the water dark so the reflection stood out.

Back after 6 weeks of absence - life interfered, but I should be able to post regularly from now on.
For "Hands", barring finding a pair of very interesting hands I wanted to shoot ones that were actively doing something, but different than the classic, playing piano or carving something.
I went down to the local fishing wharf and had the idea of someone holding something interesting and dark, maybe a huge urchin in their hands to make for a good b&w contrast. Turns out people wear gloves when holding urchins (smart) and this years fashionable color in rubber gloves is black.
So scrapped that idea and tried to catch the black gloves agains something light instead, and caught this.

Frozen
Project 52 B&W
Week 3: Frozen
What a difficult theme to do in B&W this turned out for me.
I tried hard to not do the obvious, but everything I tried turned out to be obvious.
Finally I gave up and decided to put the camera in the freezer and do yet another self portrait, but before I could figure out the lighting, flash ratios and all that, my devices started failing me - dew on the lens, the radio triggers acting funny, flashes not firing.
I was almost giving up on this weeks photo (or go shoot something very obvious) when this little guy appeared on my doorstep; a belated holiday gift which got stuck in mail, and I had the answer.
How is this frozen? Well it is glass, which is a liquid, so any moment we look at a glass piece, it is a frozen moment of it's life cycle (well, maybe I am pushing it). Actually I thought with good... more »

It does take time to go through each profile and verify that they are active and meet the standards for inclusion.
More importantly it allows my friends to be introduced to your friends.. and promotes some great photography on G+.
So how did I decide who is in the circles this time?
1) Active They have posted within the last month. With the holidays a lot of folks have slowed down but these folks are still there. Yes, I visited each stream.

Project 52 B&W Week 2: Self portrait
For this self portrait I chose to work on strobe technique rather than trying to be artistic (already done the super dramatic artsy selfie for another project)
The setup is 2 strobes. One naked direct strobe to blow out the back wall and the second to light me via a reflector.
Having done the low key portrait for the abovementioned project, this time I wanted to get a high key one. This is the last of 4 setups. Both the back wall and the face strobes are on the same side, which gave a more natural look. I actually liked the ones where the strobes were on different sides - a very dramatic if not disturbing/confusing look due to the light reflecting from the back wall on the opposite side of my face, but as I said, I wasn't going for dramatic this time.
The similarity of the pose and lighting to the now famous ... more »

Waiting for it in deep thought
Project 52 B&W Week 1: Happy New Year
I am happy that I was able to make the photo I have seen in my minds eye for this weeks subject. I was planning for something moody, and also something of high contrast for it to make a good B&W image. Then I saw these two, seemingly in deep thought. The Christmas ornaments behind them and the sparkly hat add a nice touch. Although, I do wish I could have placed her higher in the frame. But the first priority was to put the tiara in front of a dark patch, and the place was too crowded to place myself at a better angle right then.

Week 1: The New Year
"I have seen the future"
It's a New Years party, but her expression looks like she has just spotted the Evil One.
Actually, this is on a skating rink, and she is probably in a place between "I don't want to fall" and "I hope my kid gets tired of this soon (he is the half helmet in front of her). The solarization is SOOC, as I was waiting for her to enter the only section of the rink that wasn't blasted with flashing disco lights, and exposed for her while the background got overblown.
