Sexism. Comedian Patton Oswalt reflects on a few serious topics, including rape jokes.

"Why, after all of my years of striving to write original material (and, at times, becoming annoyingly self-righteous about it) and struggling find new viewpoints or untried approaches to any subject, did I suddenly balk and protest when an articulate, intelligent and, at times, angry contingent of people were asking my to apply the same principles to the subject of rape?  Any edgy or taboo subject can become just as hackneyed as an acceptable or non-controversial one if the exact same approach is made every time.  But I wasn’t willing to hear that."

Well worth the read. (You can skip to the rape joke part if you don't really care about the other topics, the thoughts are mostly independent.)

See the sun’s shadows on the world from days gone by. Make sure you have Google Earth installed, then click View > Sun. Tilt your view so the horizon is in focus, and then adjust the time of day by using the slider in the upper left. Watch the sun and the stars move across the sky. #earth

Google+ Dashboard - making it easier to manage your online presence

Today millions of businesses use Google+ to connect with their customers in meaningful ways. Many of these businesses also use AdWords to promote their products; Maps to update store info; and YouTube to publish high-quality video content (to name a few). We want to make it easier to manage your online presence - all across Google - so today we're getting started with Google+ Dashboard. After signing in to your Google+ page, you'll now have access to the following Dashboard features:

1) The ability to update your info (like website URLs, store hours and phone numbers) across Maps, Search and Google+ - all from the Overview tab.

2) One place to monitor your Google+ notifications, assign page managers, share photos and videos - even start a Hangout with followers.

Portraits Of People Wrapped In Rubber Bands

Photographer Wes Naman is no stranger to the world of weird pain inducing photography in the most hilarious way possible. He swept over the web once with his series of people wrapped in Scotch Tape, and now Wes is at it again with a new series of portraits of musicians encaged in rubber bands, while wearing a band T.

[Thisiswhyyoureskinny.com (Spoiler Alert: It's Photoshop.)]

Most revealing to me is the way that Jennifer Lawrence's strong, buff arms are whittled down to make her look like a fragile twig--just how we like our wominz, amirite, guise? As a friend said, "These are great examples of how even folks who have all the time, money, and motivation to remove their flaws and look a certain way still fall short of our outrageously unreasonable idealization of what real human bodies look like."

Not that we didn't all already know that, but always a good reminder.

Here's a shot from Beijing, China, taken a few weeks ago during my visit. I wasn't able to post much there because G+ was blocked. As many of you who have been to Beijing may attest, the skies are quite muggy and polluted there. I only saw a blue colored sky once in 10 days. Though I'm not completely certain, this appears to be a nuclear power plant, so what's coming out of those towers would be steam. Maybe that's one step to cleaning up the air in Beijing.

It feels good to be home again. As usual I found time yesterday to unwind from the long flights spending some quality time in the garden and with a leaf blower sending the detritus over the hill side to decompose in the ravine.  I had a great trip to Borneo and Australia and now am looking ahead to teaching my workshop this coming weekend in Boston and NJ.  I hope to see many of you there, I love teaching this workshop, I'm continually changing the photos and stories and it's always fresh and new for me as well as those who come back time and again.

I've yet to really go through all of my images from Australia but will have them posted before the week is out.  Until then here is a shot from a previous trip to that region.

Why should we be concerned about the government sweeping up all of our information?

Are you afraid of terrorists? Are you afraid of getting bombed or shot? Maybe you're afraid of the wrong things.

Lets say you are a college student and you get in with some people who want to stop farming practices that hurt animals. So you make a plan and go to protest these practices. You get there, and wow, the protest is huge. You never expected this, you were just goofing off. Well now everyone who was there is suspect. Even though you technically had the right to protest, you're now considered a dangerous person. [source: link below]

How many people are killed by random acts of terror every year? Compare that to how many people live under oppressive regimes.

Which are you more afraid of now?

"A farmer, Roscoe Filburn, was growing wheat for on-farm consumption in Ohio. The U.S. government had established limits on wheat production based on acreage owned by a farmer, in order to drive up wheat prices during the Great Depression, and Filburn was growing more than the limits permitted. Filburn was ordered to destroy his crops and pay a fine, even though he was producing the excess wheat for his own use and had no intention of selling it."

Within the past few weeks I've seen gorgeous photos from +Colby Brown, +Scott Rinckenberger, and Becca Skinner from Great Sand Dunes National Park. Somehow I've lived in Colorado for over 4 years and have never made it down to check out. Inspired by these three photographers who's work I greatly respect, I decided to finally venture down to check it out myself.

Knowing that light creates nice shadows in the afternoon, I wanted to capture a high contrast image in black and white. I figured the difficult part, though, would be getting a hiker into the frame to show a sense of scale. After setting up my composition and waiting for a few minutes for someone to walk through, I decided to take things into my own hands. I plugged in my timer remote to my 1DX and set up a timelapse to capture 1 shot every 3 seconds and walked up the hill myself. The nice contrasting spot is 200-300 yards... more »
