Vernal Pond

I've been posting a few pictures taken around this little vernal pond over the last days. It is within a small wooded wetland area in a very suburban NJ town and it is where I walk my dog in the mornings; some peace and quiet contemplation of Nature is a great way to start the day.
At this time of year the melted snow and Spring rain make for a nice wetlands for salamanders and other amphibians. But, by late summer this is just some mud and wet, decaying leaves so no fish live here.

A 10s window-braced shot (because I forgot to grab my tripod on my way out the door!) converted to b/w in SEP2. The moon and a few visible stars are one set of nightlights while the homes across the valley are the others. The bit of ground fog picked up the light from the moon so I'll count that as "night-glow" :)

The Late Bloomer

Going a little abstract for #treetuesday  this time:)

This is an rather heavily processed inversion of some nighttime light painting. There is no added texture, just the effects of bringing out some of the digital noise along with some shadow detail.

This is a closer view (and in colour) of one arch of this decaying stone arched bridge over Bushkill Creek near Wind Gap PA. The construction of these arches is quite impressive and even though a lot of the external parts are falling away the arch itself is still intact.

When the theme was announced and +Gene Bowker was tagged as the inspiration for it I knew what had to be in the image -- something related to trains/railroads. This little piece of a very long freight train complete with a bit of the rail it was riding on is my submission for this week.

I've met some amazing photographers here on G+ and something they all have in common is that light. No matter how complex their exteriors may be they all use that light to take amazing pictures and share some of themselves with the rest of us. You are an amazing group, thank you for your artistry.

I deeply agree with most of this from Jörg Colberg "The Ethics of Street Photography" http://jmcolberg.com/weblog/extended/archives/the_ethics_of_street_photography/ … because having personal ethics is far more important than the macho posturing all too prevalent in the street-shooting world. One internet guru-phenom said you need big balls; far more important are a big heart and a big brain.

Yep, I know they are everywhere. :)  And look, it is a square photo :)

I took this a few weeks ago as part of the Project52 B&W theme Reflection but didn't use it. But I like the the image because there has been a lot of reflecting going on. You know those times in life when roads connect, cross-over, diverge and you get to choose whether to stay on one or pick another? Yes, one of those times. So I've picked a new road. The choice has actually been influenced strongly by some of the people right here on G+ and, while I can only see as far as the next bend in that road, I am happy with the choice and the changes it'll bring. Thank you to all the GMAPP folks led by RGW and, most especially, to AWA --- it'd be a different road without you.

It's depressing.

I just stopped by a friend's page. She has a GSD rescue north of Sacramento which she has to close down due to lack of funding. She lost her job and financial contributions are scarce.

What's depressing is the very many German Shepherd dogs who wind up in shelters: municipal dog pounds, kill shelters, privately funded rescues. So very many really good dogs: dumped. 

Why?

- Because the cute Christmas puppy turned into a chew monster with needle sharp teeth and no respect for personal property.
- Because the puppy messes all over the house and when I hit him with a rolled up newspaper, he pees all over himself.
- Because he barks all day and tears down the Venetian blinds and has scraped gouges in the apartment door.
- Because he drags me all over the place when I take him for a walk and I'm sick of it.more »

The Old Stone Bridge

Probably built in the 1800's this bridge hasn't been used in a long time and floods and storms and Nature in general are doing it in. The arches are still intact, a testament to the physics of design and the skilled stonemasons who built them. But the stone railings are crumbling and falling into the stream.

This is over Bush Kill creek near Wind Gap PA.

Turkey Vultures at The Steel

I managed to get a shot of these two turkey vultures (buzzards) hanging around at the remains of the Bethlehem Steel plant (The Steel). I guess the small animal population is pretty good around here with all the fenced-off land and from this height (about 10 stories) they'd be able keep a close eye out for freshly dead food.

Around this neck o'the woods Spring is a little slow in coming. But, as if in a dream, colourful flowers do show up every now and then. In this case a Modified Parlow (as in +Sandra Parlow) was used so this particular dream could float out on the G+ stream

With a little passive-agressive backtalk Winter has tried to delay the entry of Spring to this little pond. The ice fingers are edging back out into open water in a bid to take over again. The effort is futile, their time has come and (almost) gone.

Decided to go with the family for the "old" shot. This is my mother's great-grandfather Thomas John Byrnes Sr. and the original photo was taken sometime prior to 1860. This image is of an old reproduction of the page from the newspaper when it was published in 1860; a new image of an old image of an old image :)

Say you want to see more posts from your travel community: now you can dial it up! Or maybe you don't want to be tempted by your dessert community (too often): choose to see fewer posts in your Home stream, or none at all. It's completely up to you!

To try it out, just visit a community that you've joined and click the "Actions" menu. You'll see options at the bottom to adjust the volume of posts in your Home stream. This will roll out throughout the day today.
